  1. J1495: what a fantastic "train in the landscape" (i.e.: art) view. Bill
  2. Some accident reports... Connecting rod piercing the firebox: http://www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/documents/MoT_CheadleHulme1922.pdf Connecting rod piercing the boiler: http://www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/documents/MoT_BetleyRoad1923.pdf A narrow escape... http://www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/documents/MoT_Northolt1950.pdf (note that the footplate men were back at work after one or two days!) Bill
  3. Great information... The RSO (W1012) must have been almost new in 1960. Was it converted back to traffic use after the exhibition? Bill
  4. What manoeuvre did the three aspects on the shunt signals (red, yellow, green?) indicate? Did the 'main' red stay illuminated? And what are the 'klaxon horns' all about? Thanks, Bill (edited)
  5. Presumably longitudinal floor planks were fitted to the purpose-built china-clay opens (diag. 1/051l; TOPS code UCV) with end doors whereas standard wooden hyfits (no end door; OWV) used for clay traffic had transverse planks? Bill
  6. It seems that Medfits never had a particularly well-defined traffic use (although that didn't stop BR building almost 4500) and they were transferred en bloc to engineers' use around the mid-1960s and they were never allocated a traffic TOPS code (OMV??). Are there any photos of Medfits carrying containers? In terms of the classic 'Not to be loaded with containers' branding on Lowfits, I wonder if that arose after an accident and an order went out to more clearly distinguish Lowfts and Conflats? Bill
  7. Hi all, This fine specimen at Worcester Foregate Street has been installed in the last few days. The distant is fixed and the theatre box indicates platform 1 or 2 at WFS. Photo copyright Peter Day, taken from a public area and posted with his permission. Thanks, Bill
  8. Lovely set of pictures. J3011: iron ore tipplers de-branded and repainted for sand traffic?? Bill
  9. There were a handful of specially constructed 'engine carriers' (DB998050--DB998053; diagram 1/635?) that transferred DMU engines between Eastleigh and St Leonards (Hastings). A couple were often to be seen in Eastleigh Works yard and looked like galvanised 'sheds' on wheels. Bill
  10. Hi all, This may be a stupid question, but does the up platform at Berwick-upon-Tweed have a section of 'dead' (un-electrified) catenary? In the photo below I can't see any evidence of insulators on the masts in the foreground (and the wire seems to pass extremely close to the overhanging platform canopy). Thanks, Bill
  11. Looking the other way, an interesting trap point just before the level crossing. Bill
  12. Hi David, This is a former Lowmac SG or Lowmac MU built under lot 3101 at Swindon in 1959. There is no model that I know of (happy to be corrected...) but the Hornby Lowmac EU is reasonably similar. The classic 1960s Airfix kit complete with digger load is based on the Lowmac EK. Good luck, Bill
  13. Indeed... Looks like we have a Medfit and a gunpowder van farther back in the train. Bill
  14. Nice shot and note the cattle wagon. I didn't realise that nose-to-nose pairings of 20s started so early. Bill
  15. And 58 and 59 (top-to-bottom, left-to-right)?? Interesting that the head-shunt has a track circuit. And what is the 'black and white' disc to the right of 'down platform'? Thanks, Bill
  16. J4306: is that a switch diamond or just some trick of the light? Thanks, Bill
  17. What would cause flats in this case? (and how would the driver be aware?) ((and are skates carried as standard or did they have to be obtained from somewhere?)) Sorry, so many questions. Thanks, Bill
  18. Hi all, Here is 66565 passing Dyce while working empty autoballasters from Keith to Millerhill yesterday (Sunday 15 October 2017). Unusually, the 170 seen to the right on an Aberdeen to Inverurie service worked into platform 2 and the freight came through platform 1, thus passing on the right. A second unusual feature was the lack of a loco at the rear of the train. Thanks, Bill
  19. There doesn't (yet) seem to be a service operating out of Inverness to cover the Aberdeen/Dundee/Perth circuit this year. Does anybody know why? Bill
  20. J5434: "deliciously" mixed... Note the open cab door due to the weather that summer. Bill
  21. So much of interest... J1289 appears to have an AX container farther up the train, as well as an internal user(?) ex-Lowfit(?) behind the 03 and a very precarious looking load of steel plates on a bogie bolster with spoked wheels. Bill
  22. Now for something different... "Locomotive crew" by A I Koernakov Bill
  23. Fantastic. Who would have thought that over 50 years later you would share these lovely shots using technology that hadn't even been thought of when you took them... Bill
  24. Nice model (fantastic underframe that can accommodate so many different BR wagons) but the colour looks more like scarlet than crimson on my screen... Bill
