  1. Though not garden birds, I had a pleasant couple of hours on Sunday morning watching 20+ hawfinches and a similar number of bramblings visiting a feeding station on the ground on the outskirts on Cardiff. They're about 35 yards from the road, so you watch from your car. Had at least one of each singing (never heard a brambling sing before). A while later, heard a bullfinch singing in a hedge next to the seawall east of Cardiff to complete an unusual hat trick.
  2. Red admiral in late Jan and a Small tort last Sun are my only butterflies so far. Didn't give the tort much attention, though, had stopped to admire a chiffchaff that was performing in the tree above it, then a stunning male firecrest (2nd one I've seen this year, after years of not seeing any in UK) hopped up onto the next branch to the chiffie. Sorry tort, you were somewhat outdone there....
  3. Kadees are ok for UK modern image, but look at least as bad as modern tension lock on steam/ early diesel. Why go to the considerable expense of converting several hundred items in many cases, for little or no benefit?
  4. Anyone P ing themselves with excitement. I know I am
  5. Might as well delete this thread, as it was usurped by the young pretender, which was posted 3 mins after this one.....
  6. To which you give a sheepish response whilst cowering as she badgers you and you have to bear it?
  7. Class 22 isn't bad either. Font on numbers not quite right, but decent models (though a b@@ger to fit crew to as cab interiors seem superglued to body.)

  10. Was steam heated by 013 from Lime St to St Helens J in early 84, when it was powering a Trans Pennine service. Probably the last steam heating I sampled on the real railway.
  11. Surely that's the layout's fault, not the loco? Pacific steam locos also look silly in those circumstances.
  12. Goes for silly money 2nd hand apparently. Friend of brother-in-law had been looking on ebay for ages and had large wallet ready. Think he paid someone to repaint a more common one eventually.
  13. One preserved, but not in working order at present. Frames of another to be the basis for the Ivatt Diesel Recreation. Think some working abroad, none in UK, I'm fairly sure.
  14. Meant to go to one of his shows in the last couple of years, didn't get round to it, bother. Watched a repeat of a C5 (?) documentary about him last night, laughed out loud several times, despite only having seen it recently. End of an era. Genius.
  15. Also attributed to Tommy Cooper
  16. Not playing. I'm pulling up the drawbridge....
  17. Someone in Hereford is going to be very confused this morning Next please!
  18. A possible scenario if through trains had continued over the S and D for a bit longer, stalwarts such as a 7F mix with some diesels that could conceivably have appeared. Don't take it too literally, it's just a "what if".
  19. You could argue that the number of preserved diesels exceeds the amount of work available, the volunteers willing to fund them and work on them, and definitely exceeds the amount of covered accommodation available to them on the vast majority of heritage lines.
  20. Just ordered one, almost did when they first came out. Used to ride on a dragon emblazoned one regularly in about 1987 from memory, between Darlington and Redcar Central...... Will sell ordinary blue/ grey 108, probably for a bit more than this one.....so thank you.
  21. Bought this on ebay a few years ago. Thought it was a metal body, though. I'll check tomorrow.
