    Stepping Up

SWMBO wants me to get a telescopic ladder. She always moans when I bring the stepladder in from the garage, "Mind the paint, don't scrape the wall" etc. Anyway last week we had a guy round to do an EPC inspection, (yes we're moving house), and he brought in his telescopic ladder to get access to the roof space. "That's what you need dear, see how easy it is to carry, and it folds up so small, you could even keep it indoors"! Ever since she's been pestering me to get one, (if only she were so enthusiastic about me ordering mode, railway stuff). Anyway, been looking on Amazon, there are quite a few in the £40 - £60 range, I'm not sure which one to go for, So any recommendations or advice about which ones to avoid would be welcome.
  3. A vicar goes to visit one of his parishioners. After getting through the niceties, he decides to get down to the serious stuff. "Tell me my dear" he says, "do you ever think about the hereafter". "Oh yes vicar" she says, "all the time". The vicar is delighted until the lady goes on, " I go into the kitchen and think to myself, what am I here after, I go upstairs and I think, what am I here after".
  4. Must admit I'd never heard of Haikus but having googled it I see what you mean. Its a habit I'm trying to break but as you can see not succeeding very well. For some reason I like to see lines of text of roughly equal lengths, touch of OCD there somewhere I think.
  5. Well I went today with my son, managed to get a couple of hours there, and to be honest I couldn't work out which layouts were new, I did recognise some of them; it was still interesting and inspiring. One thing I did notice and found a bit disappointing was on a couple of automated layouts, the sight of locos going from 60 - 0 in one second. Nevertheless it was a very enjoyable couple of hours.
  6. This will only mean anything to fellow Cornishmen, but I went to a cremation last week where the music as we went in was Lamorna, and as we left, Trelawny, both by a male voice choir. (For the non-Cornish folk, Trelawny is considered by many to be the Cornish Anthem).
  7. No, just tapping into the knowledge of other RMWebbers who might have visited recently. I thought that's what the forum was all about, sharing information. Apologies if I've upset anyone, wasn't my intention.
  8. Have the layouts at Pecorama changed much in the last couple of years? I was thinking of paying a visit, but may not be worth it if it's the same as last time I went.

    Geography

Most politics is comedy, or at least best treated as comedy.
  10. From my (limited) experience of sleeper trains I came to the conclusion they would be better named Waker Trains.
  11. Its the 21st century equivalent of the tender corridor; crew changes can be made on the move. (Well they had to find some way of making them more efficient).
  12. Like many of you I expect, I had an email from Dapol on Tuesday with their latest offers, including a good deal on their N gauge manor at £50, which I eventually persuaded myself I should take up. Browsing through EBay this afternoon I noticed one enterprising person managed to bag 6 of them and is now flogging them at £99 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dapol-2S-001-004-N-gauge-7821-DITCHEAT-MANOR-in-BR-mxd-traf-DCC-READY-new-/192312773560?hash=item2cc6bc0bb8:g:CL0AAOSwsm1Zw5yb
  13. Hadn't thought of that. I've only been looking at them on line. I'll have a look at some 'in the flesh'.
  14. Thanks for the responses. As for handling the bulb, I made sure I handled it with a cloth. I had heard you shouldn't use bare hands, but never knew exactly why, so thanks for explaining that.
  15. I've used the title because that's the reply, I'm expecting. It seems more and more to be the reply to household electrical queries. However my question is this. Our security light seems to have died. It stopped working, I replaced the bulb, or whatever you call those long strips of glass with coiled wire inside and contacts on each end. When I turned the power back on, it lit once, went off and won't come on again. Rather than faffing around with it I decided to replace it, but therein lies the problem. The one I have fits directly onto the wall, so the wiring is all covered. Most of the replacements I've looked at are mounted on a bracket, which means there will be a short length of cable running from the wall to the back of the light. Can I use ordinary cable for this or does it have to be outdoor cable?
  16. There's already a thread on this.Sorry I can't post the link, haven't worked out how to to that on a tablet, but if you look back through today's posts new threads you'll find it
  17. Or put another way,"There is a requirement to ascertain the intended direction of travel, at a time when the train is stationary".
  18. Hoping I'm in the right area for this. Been finding lately that when I try to view some videos linked to forum posts, I get an error message saying the browser I'm using does not support HTML5 Video. My stepson, who's a bit of a wiz kid on these things had a look at it and said he'd changed the default browser to Google Chrome, but I'm still unable to view the video files. Any suggestions welcome.
  19. The old broom might come in useful making tea or coffee for you while you're modelling/running trains!
  20. Nope, just tried the link, it went to the Facebook log in page and asked for a password.
  21. I know of someone who volunteers on a preserved railway which is planning an extension to which his brother objects; must be interesting when the 2 get together,
  22. Brucie arrives at the pearly gates; St. Peter turns to the angels, "Didn't he do well", then turns to Brucie "Nice to see you, to see you - nice".
