For me, a model railway, layout, train set, call it what you will, that has a look, a feel, an atmosphere, that cannot be quantified, using toy or scale elements, is all about how they are used and placed. Also, lighting can completely change a scene, and daylight cannot be beat. Just take any model you have and put it outside against a setting sun. Instantly changes it for the better, tension lock couplings or whatever! If your layout is portable, stick it on the lawn etc., take before and after photos and I bet it looks 100 times better. Just look at my cheapo loco's inside and outside. I know which I would submit to Railway Modeller!

I have a few of those. From the "Classic Train Set" that has a very South African feel to the loco, stock and buildings. To be honest, a much better set with plenty of play value than the Hornby Playtrains range and they can be found for less than a tenner. They do several, bigger sets too, with freight stock and the largest has both coaches and wagons. Sound and lights as standard. What's not to love, and great for the garden...

My mojo is alive and well but, currently suffering with RSI and some days is reasonable, some very bad. The projects have slowed right down but you only need one finger to buy.... and have I! So, on the reasonable days, I repair and refurbish and have learnt a few things. Physiotherapy is fun if you let the wife watch and when she stops laughing, I suggest SHE gets the ice creams...
