Bachmann 47 looks right, despite its mechanical pulling power, which is the best of all.

Sorry don't agree with that, a Heljan 47 has superior traction effort compared to the Bachmann model.  Although the Heljan model has only 4 axle drive, placed head to head with an unpowered/dead Bachmann 47, the Heljan will easily push it along the track, not so the other way around, the Bachmann will just sit and spin all it's wheels !

  2. Latest from the paint shop  - 47 612  Titan re-worked into 47 555 The Commonwealth Spirit.  The Yellow ends and cab roof domes being repainted, mainly to revert the head boxes back to half Grey half Yellow - from all Dark Grey on 612.  Brandings on one side were also changed so the arrow is now before the InterCity script, not after as per 612.

That’s not good – it means that the driver has to get into the cab and startup before he can slam the door! The same applies to lighting. If F0 is a master lighting switch, the driver has to turn the headlights on before he can turn the cab light on to find the switch. I hope those pitfalls will be avoided.

The majority of lighting functions can be configured via CV changes on the Lol 5 being used.

I would suspect the cab lights will have their own F Key..surely the driver has to open the cab door door first, then put the cab light ON to find the main lighting switches, again assuming it's in the dark.

If Biff is supplying the sound file, then like his other comprehensive sound files all this will be included.

  4. Hi Rob

Having worked em call that "butchered" a number of Bach 37 chassis blocks to fit EM2 speakers, I often had to straighten the chassis block after cutting it as they bowed a bit. The metal is fairly soft and with care straightens fairly easily, use a straight edge along the bottom edges to confirm.

Take the plastic chassis frame off and check your model, if bowed can be either be straightened carefully in a vice or if not file the bottom edge where necessary to get it back straight again.

  5. Bachmann made numerous attempts to get their 37 correct, the latest models being their best, but they still suffer a number of issues that have been well discussed in the past.

Lima 37's were OK in their day but times have since moved on a lot.

Going by the the pre pro images of the forthcoming Accurascale 37 it's looking likely that finally an accurate fully detailed 00 scale 37 will be available RTR at a realistic price, but time will tell......

Cheers! Think will get away with patch painting as most of these have decidedly ‘newer’ looking areas where the DRS vinyls have been removed.

Does anybody have any recommendations for a rattle can match for DRS’ Oxford Blue?

Try Halfords they should be able to make up a spray can of Oxford Blue or something very close.  Oxford Blue is a British Standard colour - BS 381C

Just to update, the sellotape method doesn’t touch the decals on 37611. Looks like they may have been tampo printed. Does anybody have any recommendations for methods to remove without damaging the underlying blue paint?

Very tricky to do, as the main body colours are very thin, it's been suggested that ink rather than paint was used. T-Cut or Brasso will take the brandings off but it's very likely the main body colour will also come off with them. Sellotape worked, but only on some very early production models. A repaint or partial re-paint perhaps the best option.

  8. Freshly finished yet another HA 08   - 08 570 in Swallow livery.  Re-worked from a Bach 08800.  Rail-Tec transfers and 3D printed works plates.  The Red Stripe and lower skirt/sole bar re-painted with the correct colours.  Next up ED 08 938.

Absolutely superb Ken. They really suit that livery.

Yep very pleased how they turned out Eddie.  A lot of work but something different.  08 761 is off to Germany . Making the most of all this time stuck indoors, will it ever end ?

  10. Fresh out of the paint shop.  08 720 / 08 761 HA Provincial 08's.  Almost identical twins, but there are a few differences if you know where to look. 08 761 was a commission job.

The majority of transfers used being by Rail-Tec, the Blue Data panels and 3D printed works plates finish off the models nicely, along with the sole bar detail.

Thanks to Steve for quickly sorting out a minor issue.

The latest bit of matt varnishing what I did was after airbrushing with Precision  Paints BR Blue with a matt finish, then brushing some old well mixed Humbrol enamel gloss varnish where  I wanted to stick some transfers on.

Having stuck some transfers on, I then protected them with some old well mixed Humbrol matt varnish.  I am a little disappointed to find that the old well mixed Humbrol enamel matt varnish is more matt than the air brushed Precision Paint matt BR blue.

I now have to practice weathernig to hide different matts.

Most Precision paints according to their labels,  have a "Dull" finish more like satin/eggshell and not Matt.

  12. Thanks for the photo/suggestions

It's 6311 in Exec livery I'm looking at doing. I have photos of one side of it I took when they worked on the over night sleeper. As usual roof area photos are not very common, it's the position of the exhaust port I was looking for - typically on the opposite side to my photos - but have now found some photos showing the other side of the roof with said port.

I'm reasonably confident it's the white balance in the photos, particularly on the latter inside the shed. In the first photo the background behind ED looks to be distinctly lighter than the black of the cab window surrounds above it. As far as I can gather from the dozen or so photos I have of the loco both in its ED and ML variants, the background was what I could best describe as BR blue. I have a couple of photos in identical positions at Motherwell. In one photo (where I would say the white balance is poor), the badge looks white on black, but in another almost identical photo it's definitely BR blue (or as close as damn it), seen here:

Withdrawn Railfreight Liveried Class 08, 08938

My guess is that when it moved to Motherwell, they just painted over the box (or perhaps even just painted out the ED) in the same colour and applied their own ML mark.

There's perhaps a better photo of it at Eastfield here:

    08938

The only question mark I would have is whether the blue box had a thin black outline, but I think opinion could easily be divided on that one (and how prominently that would show at 4mm is negligible anyway). If somebody knows 100% categorically then feel free to chime in. Who knows, maybe even the gentleman who applied it could be reading this!

EDIT: I think Eddie is cracked it whilst I was responding. I'm going to amend the ED variant to BR blue with a thin black outline. Nice one Eddie. And people sometimes wonder where all the time goes!

    Hi Steve

Any update on the revised 4mm ED 08938 transfer set ?  Noticed your e-mail is temporarily unavailable.  I've a couple of other items to order, so will just get them all together.

    Regards

    Ken
