  1. Well, that's the laptop finished. The HDD has expired. It was Windows 7. I will not get a Windows 10 replacement. I'll use my mobile devices instead.

Replace HDD with SSD, and install latest Linux Mint (as I've just done as my old laptop was creaking along with great difficulty). Now running Windows 7 in a VM (it still updates and without all the delayed carp of 100% cpu for a svchost.exe!Yay!)

  2. A violent storms has caused destruction to a village in Cornwall earlier yesterdayhttp://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cornwall-40650406

  3. The 16.25 from Scarborough to Hull and Sheffield has been cancelled owing to hitting someone just south of Beverley station. I won't get home until late, but fully understand the situation. I just hope that whoever it is recovers in hospital. I wish them well.

  6. Today I was informed that fares on Northern are not yet going up owing to a mistake. Make of that what you will.

  7. Merry Christmas everyone!

  8. 57 minutes late from Leeds on the late running 16.38 to Hull. No driver and a fatality at Selby were the reasons given. I don't know when or if I will get to Beverley!

Well at least you'll be getting there eventually, someone else won't and a driver possibly traumatised as well. Some people are so damn selfish!

I was due to get that train, got the 16.52 to Selby instead. Not heard anything about a fatality at Selby. Problems seemed to be due to a broken down train at Slaithwaite.

Sorry for the driver and the poor victim. Who can imagine the state of despair or disturbance a human being's mind could be in to do that to themselves. Their family will be going through hell and the poor damn driver won't be having a great day either.

  9. Just read this about the state of our national rail network on the BBC http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-37835087

I notice it says has been falling for the last few years, which means presumably it was rising before that. Strangely, I don't seem to remember the BBC reporting on that...

  10. Just seen Leander departing Scarborough on a special to Castleford. Most spectacular sight as it departed into the setting sun.

  11. 16.25 Scarborough to Hull delayed by 21 minutes. A vehicle hit a bridge at Bridlington. It is the second time in three months that has happened!

I always thought the "Press" had to report that the "train-thing" had hit the road vehicle like they do for every crossing incident!

  20. Arriva are going to be prosecuting people for fare dodging whether they have made every effort to purchase a ticket prior to travelling or not. If the ticket office is closed, and the ticket machine on the platform is not working, then it will be a case of either a fine or jail. We all should purchase our tickets prior to travelling, but if we genuinely cannot, then surely other ways should be found other than prosecution.

      Market65

Dave, that has not been explained, but, hopefully, in that situation, you will able to purchase a ticket on the train with no legal worries.

    3. Horsetan

      Horsetan

It's Arriva's dastardly plan to earn "income" twice from the same journey.

    4. Wheatley

      Wheatley

Not true. There either has to be "intent to avoid payment" (Railways Act offence) or an intent to travel without a ticket where facilities existed to buy one before travel (Byelaw offence). If the booking office is shut and the machine isn't working there were no facilities so you don't get prosecuted, it's the first thing they check. If you couldn't be bothered queuing or didn't get there early enough then there were facilities, you just chose not to use them so y...

  21. I amona train from York to Hull. We crossed over the ECML at Hambleton at 4.29 PM, and to the immediate south I saw what I think was a Freightliner which had come into some kind of difficulty. No mention on National Rails website about any service disruptions. I feel a bit baffled!

Thanks for that about the engineering work. I was hoping it would be that - just France that National Rail were not reporting any disruption.

  22. Not one word or signage so far from Arriva - who have taken on the franchise from Northern.

  23. The last day for Northern Rail is nearly over. No wreaths to be seen on the fronts of trains or detonators exploding - just The End.
