  1. Yes, but this wouldn't be RMweb if we didn't wander off topic from time to time.
  2. Hi all. I have been clearing out my old bookmarks lately and rediscovered this absolute gem of a thread on the urban Glasgow forum. I found this completely by accident a few years ago after following a Pintrest link of all things! Anyway it's a fascinating read, and well worth the time to do all 100+ pages. Link: HERE
  3. Many thanks for the colour tip, I'll get hold of a pot and see what it looks like on a test section of brick plasticard. I've seen a few buildings built from London yellow bricks with red brick detailing and I like the look of it, but struggle to get the colour quite right. With regards to the time taken to achieve a end result your happy with, I find that the simplest sounding jobs can often be the most time consuming. If you want to add some more variety to the surface you could lay some sheets of granite road sets to divide the area up. Looking forward to see the layout develop.
  4. A little off topic, but would you mind sharing which colours you have painted the retaining walls with? Looks to be a good base to represent London yellow brick.
  5. Yep, bit of everything in that yard.
  6. Not too much concrete but here is a little inspiration for you.
  7. Halfords spray paints are your friend here. Cover the entire area with the matt khaki from their cammo range, then mist normal grey primer over some areas to vary the colour.
  8. Have a look here: http://www.disused-stations.org.uk/n/north_woolwich/ Although it was later replaced by a pair of loco headshunts, I would guess because no need to turn tank locos around. In it's later form it reminds me a little of seironim. The turntable pit is still there today. A couple of views of the old turntable site in this vid:
  9. Another example would be North Woolwich, even complete with the turntable at the end of the platforms. Busy urban terminus with a small goods yard between the station and the river.
  10. Thank you both, that is indeed it. That layout always stuck in the back of mind as having just the right atmosphere of the place, and that is what counts. Sad to read it is no more, but at least we have photos. Interesting to me that some of it I remember from the article and other parts look different, I guess it evolved over time.
  11. The last piece of the puzzle so to speak, looking forward to the pics.
  12. Hi all, hoping that some of you with better memories than mine can help me a little. Some years ago there was a London transport layout featured in I think Railway modeler, possibly called "Cromwell road"? It had scratch built 3 car sets of surface stock, running on a circular layout with 2 - 3 stations. Lots of LT buses and vehicles on it too. Can anyone identify which layout it was, or better still help me find any details of it? Cheers.
  13. Could you build a portable shunting layout, similar sort of thing just without the MPD and main running lines?
  14. I agree but they dont have the resources to look after everything, the previous state of the class 71 and the 487 driving car a good example of that. So I'd rather see items go to where they are best looked after. The 4VEP driving car is no longer a part of the NRM collection, and the class 442 was declined so units dont seem to be a high priority.
  15. We do still have CIG units 1497 and 1498 with us, so maybe no need for one at the NRM.
  16. Another vote for adblocker plus, been working well for years. It's still free, but worth giving a small donation when prompted as I find it a must have service.
  17. From what I've read there were heavy penalties at the time for those sorts of speeds, the exact reasons why I'n not sure of. It will be interesting once the 5550 is operational, to see if they do make a speed record attempt. I know the group had moved away from that idea, but it would put alot of unanswered questions to bed.
  18. Iirc 120mph was the design max but it did run at 100mph regularly when in service, I think it's limited to 80mph these days depending on location. Alot of the larger 4-8-4 locos have seen around 115mph in test's, though I dont think many have been officially pushed to see how fast they could really go. The stories of PRR T1's running at 120mph isnt hard to believe, and in the case of the S1 higher still.
  19. I think scaletrains make something similar.
  20. I think that did happen, but via St Marys curve rather than Liverpool street.
  21. The great Northern had a large one at Farringdon directly behind the station.
  22. No problem, it's undergoing a rebuild at the moment. The up to date pics are here: LINK
  23. Hi Andrew, just reading about what you wanted to do above the station and thought this thread might give you some ideas: LINK
