  1. Raphael I meant to say earlier it's nice to see you back posting on here, you have been missed! Would be good to see an update on your layout etc again on here. I would also be pleased to link to it from the new Southern Railway Group on here too.
  2. Doh! serves me right for posting from memery, I knew it was the first built but forgot that the class started at 530 not 540. Note to self; next time, remember to check information before posting. Dave I have a feeling their might be a copyright issue with the picture as it is a scan from a current book, might be worth hosting somewhere else and linking to it, to keep within the forum rules. Withe respect to the plate on the cabside, it's a number plate of which there were three (one on each cab side and one on the rear of the bunker / tender) fitted during the Maunsell livery era up to 1937/8 Oringally there were 13 5/8" x 7 5/8" oval plates with "Southern Railway" across the top then the A, B or E prefix below that and then the number below the prefix. After the 1931 renumbering (ie dropping the A,B or E prefix) They were 13 1/2" x 7 9/16" oval plates with the number in the middle and "Southern" across the top and "Railway" across the bottom.
  3. Raphael If I remember correctly the Wills kit was based on Q class number 540 which has the angled frames infront of the smokebox as per the kit whilst the other members of the class all had the curved frame tops.
  4. Changing tack slightly but to give a heads up that a new Southern layout is about to be born. At the Hornby Magazine Live / Hartlepool model railway exhibiton in a weeks time (9/10th July) Mike Wild (editor or Hornby Mag) , Richard Proudman and myself will be building a layout over the weekend of the show as a live demo. It will be called Ashland, owing to it being loosely based on a couple of North Cornwall Railway stations, and will comprise of a typical passing station and goods yard built across two 4' 6" scenic boards. I will make sure that a few pictures are posted on here after the event. I am pretty confident that we will be able to complete it.
  5. OP updated to inlcude the new thread by jonte on his Harpford layout
  6. Hi Dave Well when first built it had the generic Triang/Hornby 0-6-0 chassis under it as the kit was orginally designed for. A couple of years later she was fitted with a old Mainline Collet Goods chassis which was slightly finer and more detail (even tho it was from the other railway) Common sense has since prevailed and she now runs sweetly on one of the fine SEF chassis's that you mentioned with a Portescap motor and indeed yes it does make the rest of the kit look very dated.
  7. That's good to hear Dave. The Will's Q was one of my first kit buids as a teenager, its now on its third chassis and is starting to look a bit tired for its age.
  8. Original Post updated with a link to Colin Parks fascinating thread on scratchbuilding a 2Hal in 4mm.
  9. Thanks 'The lurker' (great name btw) I don't was to wonder of fthe purpose of this topic to much but here is a little teaser of some of the progress on the buildings for Hawkhurst so far... Firstly the signal box and the perishable store The goods shed is 80% complete but no pics of that yet Note the pictures above of the real builds are as they are now and not necessarily in the condition they were in for my modelling period, but gives you an idea.
  10. The backscene from Ron North of the High Wycombe and District MRS certainly looks the part he is a very talented man, although he makes out all he does is dawb a bit of paint. I am fortunate that the he also painted the backscene for me on Fisherton Sarum, which includes Salisbury Cathedral! Julia, the layout is certainly continuing to look really magnificent, I am so glad the mojo has come back, your recent work has further lifted things to yet another even higher level. I can't wait to see this in the flesh once again.
  11. Link to GeorgeT's stuning scratchbuild of a 7mm Light pacific added to OP. Feel free to let me have anymore relevant links.
  12. OP duly updated Jam, many thanks. Keep them coming folks
  13. Thanks Red Fox I have updated the OP in this thread accordingly.
  14. Rather then loose this thread in the old Group archive section this has now been moved here into the Southern Railway Group which hopefully will also make it more obvious that its not one of the other S&D's as at least one of them has its own Group now!
  15. I didnt get up to Waterloo all that often but I do remember as a youngster going to the 'Casey Jones' Burger bar though! If that does not give my age range away too much. Welocme aboard Rick even with those initials in prominent in your user name! Glad to hear another Southern layout is on the cards, it does not surprise me that a few more Cornwallish layouts will start to appear due to the some of the models now and about to be available.
  16. Hi Rod Yes the office block between the Main and Windsor line platforms was known as the 'village'. It was of course demolished to make way for the Eurostar platforms.
  17. Well I chose Waterloo as it was, post 1923, the HQ for both the SR and BR(s). Also being located in the 'village' offices we would be just a few steps away from the famous clock to meet new friends under...which I hope this Group will facilitate...
  18. I'm glad you are liking what I have done so far. I am always open to other suggestions etc.in this thread, or simply pull up a chair in a virtual 'village' at Waterloo and use this thread to have a natter about all things Southern and BR(s).
  19. I'm glad you found it OK Chris. I am hoping that the new Group will enable such threads to be revitalised!
  20. OP Updated with a few more layout links, keep them coming....

  25. After chatting with Andy we have decided that the best practice approach for the Group is to provide threads to post links to layout, workbench and kit building / scratch building topics that have a Southern / BR(s) theme keeping them in the main area of the forum structure. You will see that the process of moving other Southern / BR(s) theme across to the Group area has commenced to hopefully make this area a good central resource for all that is relevant to the Southern /BR(s) on the forum. If you are aware of other threads that you feel should be moved to the group either let me know by PM or use the report function to make the admin team aware.
