  1. There were still a few loco hauled Hull - Doncaster and Doncaster - York local trains in 1970. They were CK+BSK, and operated early morning and mid-evening, probably to cater for post and parcel traffic as much as anything. Also York - Scarborough and return which was BSK+SK+BCK, and Leeds - Hull which was BG+SK+CK.
  2. Plenty of Mk2e at London Liverpool Street in 1981 according to my notes.
  3. A fact lost on the operators of a couple of railtours I've been on :) They were of course common on the Great Eastern part of the Eastern Region in later years.
  4. And for the avoidance of doubt, 90766 was photographed at Brighton shed.
  5. I'll put this here, as I've just come accross it. The Tartan Arrow CCTs fitted with air brakes were 94151/72/97, 94212/29/46, 94384, 94454, 94772, 94845/72 (11). From the list quoted above all carried Tartan Arrow livery except 94197.
  6. You can look up what models have been built on here. https://www.modelraildatabase.com/locomotives/
  7. Beware the Mainline version though - almost all of those you will find secondhand will have split gears - either one or both. The plastic gear wheels split on the axle, so most of the drive doesn't reach the wheels and they usually make a clicking noise if they do move. You can get 3D printed replacements these days from AliExpress but I personally haven't tried that. Another option is getting an early Bachmann version - which was the Mainline tooling with a much better motor and all wheel drive. They are maybe 1/3 more expensive than the Lima and Mainline equivalents. They first ones from 1998 have no lights and sit a little low. If you want to pay a little more, the 8-pin DCC upgrade happened in 2001/2, and then from about 2010 the 21-pin version with lights came along. None have been made since about 2013, replaced by the newly tooled class 43 in 2015.
  8. Not sure if there are some remnants of overhead wires in this shot of Lovers Walk. Brighton Station Approaches, Mar/Apr 1965 by Ian Nolan, on Flickr
  9. I’m not sure if it has been mentioned, but the other location initially overhead wired in 1942, along with Balcombe Yard, was Brighton Lovers Walk. Norwood Yard had some roads electrified with protected 3rd rail by July 1943.
  10. I haven't seen any evidence that there was wiring at Chichester Yard. There was one or possibly two 3rd rail electrified roads, and four or five standard roads. Presumably the yard pilot made up the Norwood train and put it onto the electrified road in time for departure.
  11. And another photo of the set in use on daily return Oban workign, this time in 1975.
  12. Nose-first running was much more common in Scotland, and also seen on short trip workings around Barrow Hill, and of course in the East End of London when first introduced. I'm interested in getting one of the 'Hornbys' - electric locos with steam heating boilers, very quirky.
  13. This being the only photo I've seen of one actually doing some banking.
  14. Photo here - June 1985 following works repaint in May. Not quite sure whether it is black paint - some has come off over the cab.
  15. Another whistler in difficulty, working the Aberdeen - KX fish in 1975. It was a at Crewe Works the following month.
  16. Not so, D5181 was also plain GFYE in April 1968. I would take issue about the lack of air brake hinges on 25032. It clearly had the hinges on the one side affected.
  17. Couple of photos of the prototype refurb 101 working the 1B11/1T53 trip on the Glasgow - Oban line in 1974 and 75.
  18. And the position of the steering wheel…
  19. Yes perhaps it was a single engine failure on the Warship, or the load limit was exceeded on this occasion - requiring a pilot.
  20. In the photo at Barnstaple, 6C17 was 04.25 Exeter Riverside - Barnstaple Freight and Milk empties in the 1969/70 WTT. 7C43 was a 22.30 Exeter Riverside - Tavistock Jn freight in the same period. It may have run as Class 6 on occasion. The D63xx could have run back east in time to pilot this train to Ilfracombe, without a headcode change on the cab facing west. The train is likely to be the 8.50 SO from Paddington which was due to arrive at 2pm.
  21. Anything from catalogue number 3509 onwards has the later wheels from new.
