In the interests of balance I did fairly recently have to return an EFE Pacer to MRD that was incorrectly wired (lights showing at wrong ends). The return and replacement was straightforward

Thats the diffrerence, i opted for the refund.

I was told "Returns have a huge cost implication for us, which inevitably are passed on to the customers"

Thats the exact wording from the email. Despite the fact that i returned the item at my own cost.

For context - out of 5 orders, 2 were returned. one the faulty 37 and the other a farish 31 which was ordered in error.

For that they banned my account basically implying i was costing them too much money.

After an official complaint to the director they did unban my account but i wont be using them again.

Having got more advice, sounds like it’s either the motor not fitted properly or a dodgy speaker.   Now noticed the lights are t working at one end either,  will contact MRD on Tuesday and it can go back to Bachmann

Haha hope thats not model railways direct. I got banned for daring to return a faulty class 37......

Likewise have DCC pre-fitted (but not always sound) having been bitten in the past with a loco I eventually had to send off repair and DCC fitting as it was so darn difficult. (The Dapol OO B4 tank). Best to let those who do it for a living have the difficulties.

Yes i quite like the Dapol option of having dcc fitted and then sound as well. Although i recently got a DCC ready 73 from rails for 99 quid as i had a hm7000 chip ready for it

I must admit most of the models I now buy are always DCC fitted or DCC sound fitted, I got so fed up with bits falling off when I had to dismantle them to fit the decoder. Of course the only exception is Hornby. One of the reasons, I suspect is on their older models it is so difficult to add DCC or sound, as in the design there seems to be no appreciation of how to fit the decoder. Even on their newer models where they are designed for HM7000 they don't include enough space for the Powerpack, which from my experience is necessary to get the best performance from the HM7000. I even mailed Hornby to find out if a HM7000 fitted model contained the Powerpack, which of course it didn't. Fortunately being a 9F it had enough pickups to allow it to work properly. I always get the opinion with Hornby electronics is an after thought, something in the modern world they have to support but is secondary to making locos. Bachmann on the other hand seem to design the electronics in, admittedly sometimes at the expense of removing a weight but at least they tried whereas Hornby would leave the weight in and leave it up to you to butcher your brand new loco.

Dapol, Accurascale, Bachmann and many more sell their locos prefitted with decent sound, which is generally cheaper than retrofitting yourself, so they obviously think that there is a market for them. Buying a sound fitted loco from Accurascale is the optimum, as they seem to tailor their sound for that specific model.

Where theres a choice i always get the sound fitted option, becasue generally it dosent work out much more expensive than buying the dcc ready model plus a decent decoder.

Fire box glow turn on issue.

I'm having trouble turning on the firebox glow. My DCC system is a Prodigy advance two, loco instructions show firebox glow on AUX 1 which my handset doesn't appear to have. I do have a ACC button which has a on off function however this wont turn on the firebox glow. I have tried both the main and program track. Has anyone else encountered this problem ? If so any guidance would be most welcome please.

    Craig

You need to use the F number given in the manual to turn it on.

The acc button on your handset is for operating points etc.

EDIT : Just looked at mine and theres no specific button.

Is yours factory sound fitted? If so Does it come n with F8 coal shovelling?

Mine has a Dapol imperium and the firebox comes on as soon as power is applied.

I seem to remember a while back some loksound chips as fitted to Bachmann locos couldn’t be overwritten as they were something like a loksound ‘select’ chips

It was about the time the price point on factory sound fitted locos dropped a touch and it turned out that was the compromise, wonder if it’s one of those?

EDIT: I’m sure it was mentioned the class 20s in train sets had them fitted, whiskey galore and the permanent way set (20088)

Permenant way deffo have a select. The whiskies set is a v5.

The selects were fitted to most Bachmann sound locos at the time

Kernow have just posted pics (not there Friday) of the revamped Hornby Class 110 DMU - 2-car only so far, although both this and the 3-car are showing as in stock now:

    https://www.kernowmodelrailcentre.com/p/74227/R30171-Hornby-Railroad-Plus-Class-110-2-Car-DMU-Train-Pack

Perhaps 'revamped' is overstating it as, apart from the now customary neat decoration and, no doubt, 5-pole version of the 'pancake' motor bogie, I can detect no changes over previous releases - those odd bodyside crease lines remain, as do the large couplings. I'm sure I won't be the only one not surprised by this...... Also it's labelled 'Railroad Plus' but I can't see the 'Plus' aspect here, unless........no, VFM is a touchy and frowned-upon subject so best not go there 🤐!

IIRC this model first appeared in 1980, and at the time was an impressive effort by Hornby - the tooling of three different bodyshells with a decent attempt at flush glazing certainly showed up the inadequacies of Lima's Class 117. The Class 110 was one of the better-looking 1st Gen DMU types without a doubt, but unfortunately its narrow area of operation restricted the appeal of the model for many, including me - as a WR modeller I had much more fun with the Lima 117  (plus razor saw, files, scalpel, filler and plasticard!)

So 43 years later, with no other model of the type available, is this a welcome return, worthy of dusting off those detailing skills for? A pity that getting rid of those crease lines would lead to a full repaint, of the sides at least, rendering that neat decoration null and void......

Ive seen the 3 car in stock at rails.

I was keen to get one but the big chunky couplers are off putting, plus at the price they are i can get better alternatives at similar prices.

For not much more than the price of the 2 car unit i can get a blue / grey class 108 from TMC ( £149 ). And for the 3 car unit i can get a 3 car class 117 from kernow for £200 ( around £30 more than the Hornby )

  9. And STILL the Class 73 profile is a pain in the rear end to install.

    4th attempt......

    And failed again..... VERY frustrating

Finally, on about the 8th attempt it installed correctly.

I did see a chap on the Hornby forum who suggested that Hornby has daid there was a glitch with class 73 file. Was there ever an issue found?

Thanks for being my eyes at Warley Ade.  The J94 is on preorder (just the bog standard BR version) and I hadn't realized it had inside motion, very neat.  This is the first time I've seen that on a mass produced model and for a good price.  I have two others with working inside motion, a J50 and J39 both from San Cheng (Fine Scale Brass) and you get to pay for the privilege.

    John

i think the Dapol pannier has it too

  12. As a bit of an update on this.

Ive sold off all my 00 stuff and purchased an EFE Class 15, a couple of wagons and a few lengths of flexi. My DCC controller has been retained as have the 21 and plux22 decoders that we re in some of the locos.

I have a maximum of 9ft x 38 inches available, but dont really want to put track more than 2ft back so i can reach an easily uncouple stuff.

The 9ft must include a short fiddle yard. so im thinking 3ft fiddle and 6ft layoput. Hopefully the 3ft will hold the class 15 and 3 small 4 wheel wagons or the Class 15 and a single CCT or MK1 BG

I think a run around will be difficult in the space. I deally i dont want to use more than 3 points. Still really inspired by hillport goods so may go for a similar trackplan. Will probably be using streamline points.

Future locos id like are an 08, a J94 and a single car DMU. Id love a Class 26/27 and a class 20 but DCC fitting them looks difficult and expensive.

  13. So as i havent seen anything mentioned online or any youtube videos i could find i thought id give my quick view of the model

Ordered from ROS using the black friday code so it cost me £298 posted.

Comes in a big box inside of which is the loco box surrounded on all sides by really thick foam / sponge. The loco itself is in a polystyrene tray and its easy to get the loco out. Its a nicely detailled mode and has plenty of wieght to it. The prefiited and working discs on the headcode lights are a nice touch.

Quick check on DC to make sure it runs ok and its nice and smooth.

DCC Fitting was fairly easy - but not quite as easy as the manual makes out.

I removed 4 screws as instructed but the body still didnt want to come off. I had to lay the model on its side and gently lever the chassis out from the bodyshell using a small flat screwdriver.

Once the body was off it was just a case of installing the Plux22 decoder. I used a Dapol imperium 8 function as it was one i already had in the draw.

Performance on DCC is really good. Crawls on speed step 1 beautifully.

Lighting wise all the lights are controlled by a sepaerate F key. On the imperium im using F0 turns on the upper light on both ends. F1 is cab light. F2 is bottom right, F3 bottom middle, F4 bottom left for the No1 end. No 2 end is F5 bottom middle, F6 bottom right. I dont have a key to turn on the bottom left on the No2 end, im assuming its becasue of the lack of functions on the decoder.  Will probably be ok with the bachmannn / zimo decoder as i think its 10 function.

Overall im really pleased as i wanted a bigger loco for my layout and this fits the bill nicely. A big bonus being the ease of DCC fitting using a standard decoder. I'll probably get a sound chip for it at a later date as according to the instructions it has 2 prefitted speakers.
