  1. With that elliptical roof it's definitely not GER - and looks very GNR : No.42853 was a Howlden 45' Brake Composite of 1899 according to Nick Campling's Historic Carriage Drawings Vol.1.
  2. Before anyone else thinks what I thunk - that's not thousands of warships 🙃
  3. Yep - with that tank of petrol it should just about make Lands End !
  4. The observation Car is not 'SR' of course - but Pullman Car Company ....... though the Devon Belle did run on the Southern.
  5. Ah - found Elstow on the map but there was obviously nothing of railway interest that side of the A6 so didn't look any further ............ DUH ! 🙄
  6. In this case - with the axleboxes hidden - the buffers appeared to be 1923 type ................. but ........ With all due apologies - it IS a 1907 wagon after all ..... It's rather light for a 1923 and I can JUST see the top of wooden door bumpers !
  7. Check the correct positioning for your loco : the arrow was normally between the nameplate and the crest/shield but some locos had the brackets higher up.
  8. ... 1923 standard, rather than 1907. ☹️ WRONG !
  9. It's the reverse now - Hastings trains stop at Orpington but if I want to head to the Kent coast I have to change at Sevenoaks or Tonbridge ......... though the Journey Planners often suggest back-tracking to St.Pancreas and using HC1* ! *High Cost 1
  10. Without reversal the West Drayton connection was only accessible from the east - so probably only of any use as a London bypass if several other options were unavailable.
  11. Depends what they thought they were going to find - Royal Mail might know about high value 'conventional' cargoes but probably not if it was illicit substances posted by a rival gang !
  12. Must've been a while ago - you'd have a job steaming off today's self-adhesive stamps ! ( I wonder what stamp collectors do ? )
  13. Yes, it looks like a superheated T9 with extended smokebox ...... a conversion that started in 1922 so barely appropriate for LSWR days.
  14. ....... and the school actually BELIEVED that !!?! 😁 Worthy of a Reggie Perrin excuse !
  15. What emergency transmission capabilities 60 years ago ? ...... I think radio contact equipment was added to the TPO coaches in response to the Great Robbery !
  16. I'm not sure 'trivial' was the word you were looking for ??!?
  17. Little doubt they'd all have been in 'olive' by that time - and probably wouldn't have seen malachite green until after the war unless absolutely desperate for a repaint.
  18. When pooling was introduced it was perceived that the wagons would return whence they belonged after the conflict - whenever that was going to be.
  19. Just the absence of any signal light should be taken as a Danger indication.
  20. Not very clever copycats if they were still at the scene when the rozzers turned up !
  21. Someone thought the business case to be strong enough for a Gate-Stock Set that could operate with M7s and O2s ........ revising the tooling ( it might have been designed-in from day one so far as we know ) would open up the field for 0415s and even Terriers ............................ though whether anyone would want to play with the cable-operated control gear is a different question entirely !!!!
