  1. Did (s)he ever pay up?
  2. And neither did the report suggest that it was Stephenson's Rocket involved in the incident. (I dislike Hyperbole / extreme exaggeration, but you started it ). I agree that a general description of 'Freight Train' was perfectly adequate to convey the storey. The incident, danger and message looses nothing by an incorrect description on the type of rail transportation.
  3. Do you just place the tin of paint in the pan with the lid on, or do you add any liquid to the pan? I thought you should only used ultrasonic cleaners with a liquid, but maybe I'm mistaken.
  4. I got a new Johnson & Starley installed about 10 years ago to replace the old one which broke down just before we moved into the house. Great the way the house can be heated so quickly, within minutes. And also love the fact that we don't have any horrible radiators hanging off the walls.
  5. I would not be surprised if part of the issue is the workmanship, and the main contractor was a 'normal' building contractor asked to build to Passive House or some other enhanced standard to which they were unfamiliar. I've experience of clients wanting the most efficient design but choosing the cheapest contractor, who in turn says "That's the way we've always built in, no need to put that in". Not saying that's what happened here though as I don;t know the details.
  6. Wow, and interesting. I'd be interested in knowing why the scheme failed? Was it that the houses weren't insulated sufficiently, was it that the client just wanted to 'Greenwash' the scheme but didn't really buy-into an ecological scheme, or did one/several of the consultants c*ck it up? Or something else?
  7. Hi Keith, I understand totally where you are coming from. In my business, we’ve been using a certain CAD software for decades. In the early days you would have bought a licence and it was yours, forever to use. We would then buy the next release (at a lower cost than new) if there were sufficient advances in the S/W, or skip it if not. The S/W companies got wise to this, and said you’ve got to upgrade every year or, after 2 years, buy it in full again (At a cost of about £1,300 new IIRC). Move forward to recently, and the S/W we use today is £2,700 - £3,500 a seat (depending on the ‘suite’), with annual upgrades costing about £1,200. However, the annual updates have been minimal in terms of functionality (There has been a lot in the architectural press this year about it, with practices writing an open letter to the CEO of one company). We were locked into paying a lot for little or no benefit. When we first bought into their software we purchased perpetual licences. For the last 3 years they have been trying to persuade us and other firms to simply ‘swap’ our perpetual licence to their new ‘Software-as-a-Service’ (SaaS) licencing model. With this you are locked in to having to pay every year with no idea if you are just paying for the same or if you will get any new functions. And if you don’t pay you are locked out of using the S/W. So now the S/W company gets a confirmed income each year without the natural pressure from their customers to perform. After 23+ years of using their S/W we have, this month, made the decision not to renew. We will be keeping our perpetual licence for as long as possible and hopefully use it for many years to come. We don’t know how our work will pan out in the future; will we contract before expanding, just contract to a small practice, or close up? Who knows? But if we need to cut-back to save the business there is no way that we will be held to ransom in not been able to access our IP in the future just because we don’t want to pay for a subscription. The perpetual licence model worked very well for both sides for many decades. It seems to me that this company, who started off by producing very good S/W for architects and were able to make that a profitable business model, now sees their shareholders as more important. I know that Adobe were one of the first to introduce the SaaS concept, but they have done it a lot more fairly. Their monthly/annual cost seems a lot more respectable compared to their old ‘Buy it’ price. Our CAD company took a whopping fee for us to buy the perpetual licence many years ago, then wanted us to give this up and buy it all again at a full price. The best analogy I can give you is if you owned your house with no mortgage. Then a company that does annual repairs or maintenance says to you, “Why don’t you give me the house that you already own and then you can rent it from me, but if you don’t pay the rent you’ll get kicked out”. We are lucky that we will be able to keep our perpetual licence. New users have no option but to subscribe to the SaaS.
  8. I second that exact tool Rob. I got a similar one from Aldi or Lidl. Looked the same but wasn't. Only seemed to strip the wire 3 out of 4 times, and looking at the insulation 'cut' it seemed overly stretched. Returned to Aldi or Lidl (whoever) I then got the C.K. wire stripper you linked to. Works perfect every time.
  9. Interesting question Fran. I've read on this forum (and that TV programme a few years ago hosted by James May) where two different retail outlets announced a loco and then had the big boys rush out their spoiler first. One was from similar tooling in one case IIRC and with the other loco, they suddenly produced lots of duplicate liveries applied to their 'adequate' model. Too early and you might find another manufacturer trying to grab a bit of the market after you guys spotting an opening. Then again, too late and you might miss out on some of the incredible expert knowledge which is available on various forums. We can all concentrate on something and get focused on a particular aspect and miss another issue. It never fails me that I can produce a drawing from scratch over a period of days / weeks and be totally happy that it's all 100% correct. Then I'll send it to the plotter and I can immediately see an error as it's coming off the print roll. It's there, and blindingly obvious but for the life of me I couldn't tune into it on the screen. No matter how long you look at a CAD screen and twist that model inside out, you'll only spot the error when you've got something tangible. It's at that point that, maybe, other parties who may not be blinded by the process, can offer comments. I've no idea of manufacturing processes so I'm not going to proffer any definitive advice, but I think you have it right on the MDO model: You've done a lot of work and are now committed, so you are ahead of any potential spoilers by others, but yet can avail of encyclopaedic knowledge from a few experts too. Speaking of which....... I'm sure you'd have spotted this yourselves before production, but where do I pick up my prize? I'll happily accept that CIE livery Class 37.
  10. Yes, will need some time to go through the stuff, lots I want to revert back to when I have time.
  11. @Accurascale Fran Looking at the artwork and the sample product, is the opening end correct relative to the underframe?
  12. No need to apologise. It was the concern for a link which clearly wasn't the RoS website, especially as such short links can be a security risk. I don't use Twitter, so I don't know how (or why) links may be changed when copied, but I guess I (we ?) learned something today. There was certainly no criticism on posting a bargain. It was actually appreciated.
  13. Why have you created a www.t.co web link to the Rails page and not the proper one, either as: https://railsofsheffield.com/groups/3244/oo-deal-of-the-day or as this? I would be very suspicious of any post which has a link not to where I am expecting. ( @AY Mod I wanted to remove the full email address in the quote above, for safety sake, but seem unable to edit text in a quote)
  14. I believe that the ability to download higher resolution images is also only available on the Pro version. Regardless of your computer monitor, you can save images beyond 4K resolution (4,800 x 3011) (Sorry, I cannot check the vanilla version, haven't got that any more).
  15. And in Graz, there is a Double Spiral Staircase. I marvel at how the stonemasons of that time were able to design and produce such workmanship with, by today's standards, crude instruments. https://www.tripadvisor.com/LocationPhotoDirectLink-g190432-i205653006-Graz_Styria.html http://travel2unlimited.com/austria144/
  16. That Alaska is the most northern state in the United States. Oh, and it's also the most western state too. And before I forget, it's also the most eastern state. https://www.sporcle.com/blog/2018/04/which-states-are-the-farthest-north-south-east-and-west/
  17. Fully accept that point (hence why it's posed on this forum), which is why I said: However, with these lying in your toolbox and then potentially being accidentally used on 230V some time in the future, the risks outweigh the benefits, in my opinion. Don't want the BH Police after me, but I thought that this was an important safety observation to make.
  18. Thanks Sir TH, but I'd be aware. I'm not sure I'd want to see these in my house. Are they to BS / EN standards, 'CE' certified? The marketing blurb is a bit suspect, like "Do not connect the neutral and fire lines to the same terminal", and one of their pictures show them in an external situation but seems to show WAGO connectors and not theirs. Maybe OK for low-current under-board model use, but I would not want them on my 230V domestic supply. If it's the same as LIUMY-Direct, then Amazon report that it's HQ is in Guang , China. If its the Litunian company then this says it all: "Liumy is a design atelje where products are hand crafted to ensure the highest quality. Our famous product is Instant Albums with pockets for the photos to hold."
  19. So it's all your fault! How can you guys sleep at night? Poor Dave. Seriously, well done guys, and congrats on the anniversary. Now, I'm just waiting here for my DJM Class 92 to come along, next deposit will be due soon, once he's back from the plane thing he's busy with.
  20. If your throttle connects at the middle of the BUS (middle of the layout), and your BUS then heads off left and right on an 'end-to-end' layout, would you need the filters at both ends or just one filter somewhere along the BUS?
  21. Reminded me of this picture I saw on Reddit early in the lockdown. That's the herbs all sorted! Some joker quipped "Thyme well spent."
  22. Are these a rebranded version of some DCC Concepts decoders?
  23. Le Corbusier touched on this with his modular man (Modulor) in trying to find how the humans can scale. Don't think we are there yet with a standard person. (I detested Le Corb at college because one of our lecturer's thought he was God and everything has to be referenced back to Le Corb).
  24. Yes Ian, it's well hidden, and not logical. Whoever thought of having a picture accessed under a colour fill menu must have been looking at the clock on a Friday afternoon.
  25. I've done 2 things with images in my excel spreadsheet inventory (another vote for Excel). I have a small thumbnail of a side view of each loco placed in a cell. Easy enough as said before. I also have a pop-up image which appears when I hover my cursor over a cell, and a larger image appears. In this example, when I hover over the class type, the large image appears. This avoids having large images taking over the whole spreadsheet, only appearing when necessary. Here's the steps to make this work. 1. Right-click in a cell and select 'Insert Comment' 2. A box appears with the excel user-name within, ready to add text comments. But adding an image takes a few different steps. 3. When the comment box appears, right-click in the fuzzy border (not within the cell) and a pop-up menu appears. Choose 'Format Comment' 3(a). You can also right click in the cell (not the comment box), and in the pop--up menu select 'Edit Comment....'. appears. then right-click the fuzzy border. -> Another way of reaching this step. 4. In the box that appears, choose the 'Colors and Lines' tab, In the Fill section, click the drop-down arrow beside 'Color' and at the bottom of the list choose 'Fill Effects'. 5. On the Fill Effects window, choose the 'Picture' tab and then select your picture. 6. OK out of all selections and then resize your 'comment' to suit.
