which Class do you most miss from today's mainline running
GeoffAlan replied to 18B's topic in UK Prototype Questions
If it has to be a diesel than Deltics, but I'd love to see a fleet of A4s in use for excursions and the like. -
Great stuff and disguising the raised track bed is easier than ballasting peco track. The electric points swung me for my latest two layouts. In the past I've used Peco and Fleischmann and won't be going back to either.

They're saying that they've found more downforce for less drag! If that's the case, and the other teams haven't done something similar, they look like a shoe in for another championship double. Time will tell.

Corona-virus - Impact of the Health Situation worldwide
GeoffAlan replied to The Stationmaster's topic in Wheeltappers
This morning they reported that the man who was taken ill on the first repatriation flight does not have the virus. So his self isolation on the plane and the authorities actions on arrival, were not actually necessary. However they were entirely rational measures. -
Good to see that well known firm of Solicitors Hadaway and Shyte mentioned. I prefer to use Soo, Grabbit and Runne myself.

Castleton, on the Esk valley line to Whitby, had coal drops into 5 or 6 separate storage areas. Back in the 1950s and 1960s I remember a coal merchant having a little shed and signs on two of the drops. Wagons would be shunted over the appropriate drop and unloaded. The coal merchant bagged and delivered to among others, my Grandparents. They got there coal by the ton or half ton as they lived in Commondale and the roads were liable to becoming impassible in winter. I do remember a couple of years where we could only visit them by train, this entailed a very long walk in the snow from the station to their house.

LMS Beyer-Garratt 2-6-0 0-6-2 in N Gauge from Hattons Originals
GeoffAlan replied to Hattons Dave's topic in Hattons
It does seem like half-hearted selling will kill this off. A shame as I have one on order. Earlier comments re the J72 are interesting, and while the N Gauge Society have had issues with their Hunslet electrics, I'm confident that not only will they appear (good news as I have two one pre-order) but that they'll be 'right'. Seriously if a society can do this then Hattons should be able to replicate it in a J72, and as the Beyer-Garratt is so much bigger, the electronics should be far less of a challenge for them. I do hope Hattons get behind their initial enthusiasm and sell the B-G harder. -
A friend of mine gave up voting in the early 1970s. His reason? Every single time he voted the government got in.

A great thread. I too am convinced that , in a universe so large [or possibly infinite?], there's almost certainly life on other planets. Given our experience on our planet that life lead to relative intelligence in a little over 4 billion years, it's almost certain it has/is/will take place elsewhere. Equally, if there is 'somebody' out there, the chances of their civilisation and ours co-existing is minute. We then are limited in potential contact by the huge distances and seeming 'universal speed limit of the speed of light. Alternatively, there are loads of visitors, who instead of talking to university professors, or governments, like to kidnap ignorant farmers in Middle America and abuse them.

I thought the same as grandadbob. I also think that for the first time in the competition we woz robbed of quite a few points.

When the loose bits came off Leclerc's car it removed Hamilton's right mirror! Had it hit the cockpit of car 44 we could have had a tragedy. AND the FIA penalised Leclerc a few seconds , unbelievable. Meanwhile Mercedes have sewn up both championships, it only remains to be seen if Bottas can take 16 points of Lewis in each race.

My favourite, which a boss I used to work for is:- THIS DOOR MUST BE KEPT CLOSED AT ALL TIMES I contemplated making a template for another sign saying:- WHY NOT REPLACE WITH A WALL? And putting it under all the first signs in the building.

What loco does this pannier model represent?
GeoffAlan replied to Lacathedrale's topic in UK Prototype Questions
Gooch's Wandering Railway? Don't the panniers look the same? -
I've pinned through cork for my layout and it worked well, My permanent layout is built on internal doors. The predominant noise of a train is clickity clack, although I do have a few noisy locos, with gear whine, that drown it out..
-
For me, it can have bells galore and whistles aplenty, but if it don't run, it's a diorama and not a model railway. It's absolutely basic that it runs. I've yet to see one in this series that does that one single thing reliably.
-
My advice is go N gauge, and if you want virtually bomb-proof running and steam engines, buy Union Mills locos. Great running and hauling and run forever. You'll need to ring Colin on the Isle of Man for orders, he doesn't do IT, but well worth the effort. PM me for a contact number. Usual disclaimer, have no connection other than as a very happy repeat customer.

WW2 Era Railway crossings.
GeoffAlan replied to G-man69's topic in Modelling Questions, Help and Tips
Beat me to it! I suspect there were many more ungated crossings pre-War than the 1950s when I remember them. -
We've been saying since late June that 'the nights are drawing in'.

GMRC Series 2 - Episode 1 - 'The Restless Earth'
GeoffAlan replied to AY Mod's topic in DVD/Video/TV
I watched series one and the stand-out layout for me was the one that looked most like one you'd see at an exhibition. It didn't win! Yes the series is aimed at Joe and Josephine Public and we are Modellers. But for me, the exposure of the hobby to the world is a Good Thing, even if we aren't over-impressed. -
Modelling in 2mm scale (N)
GeoffAlan replied to Andy Whittle's topic in Modelling Questions, Help and Tips
As a long time N gauge modeller, some 45 yrs or so, I look at 2mm scale models in some awe. However, while I can see the attraction, I feel the effort and plain difficulty is beyond me. The same applies to P4 and similar 'better scale' OO style models. If the better accuracy is a real attraction and you have to time, skills and patience then go for it, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. -
GMRC Series 2 - Episode 1 - 'The Restless Earth'
GeoffAlan replied to AY Mod's topic in DVD/Video/TV
I too feel it's a better stab at the concept than series 1. I think the judges have emphasised operational reliability, not that it was evident in all cases! Not my favourite TV format really but worth a watch. -
Tomytec Chassis Availability or Lack Thereof
GeoffAlan replied to John M Upton's topic in Modelling Questions, Help and Tips
I too had difficulty sourcing a chassis and eventually bought it from Japan. Be aware you may well incur import duties and an exorbitant fee from the Post office. Last time I imported from japan I paid £4 odd duty and £8 to the PO! -
Yes, my 1954/5 built unit died the death in the 1990s. By then, having moved to N gauge in the 1970s, it was used for it's dc 12v continuous and 15v ac only.
