  1. It's a bit early for popcorn. I have some toast and marmalade. Seriously, this thread, in the absence of any facts, is starting to get nasty.
  2. Oh yeah... https://www.derehamtimes.co.uk/news/mid-norfolk-railway-deal-store-greater-anglia-trains-1-5586057
  3. I was one of the ones who on occasion called him out for his attitude to others, in particular newish members with only a limited skillset but a willingness to learn. His attitude to RTR annoyed me in particular, and a favourite of his was to refer to Hornby magazine as the "Box-opener's Beano". As has been pointed out, another favourite trick was to insult someone on open forum and then rather rapidly delete the post. You cannot treat people like that and expect to get away with it, so I guess it caught up with him eventually. https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/121995-carrog-in-4mm-ruabon-discussion/page/100/ I would be the first to admit that he's an outstanding modeller, but that doesn't give anyone a perpetual "get out of jail card" to be rude to others. I'm glad he's still posting elsewhere, giving others the chance to follow his work. I'm just glad he isn't posting here anymore.
  4. Yes - about 18 months ago. Bought two Bachmann locos advertised as new from a private seller. Arrived within 3 days. All was well, so I left feedback for the seller. There had been no communication at all from the seller and after a while had passed, no feedback had been received. No big deal, so I forgot about it. About 4-5 weeks later, I received a refund notification from PayPal - both items. Like you, I tried to message the seller but noticed they were no longer a registered ebay user. There was no packing slip with the locos, so I had no way at all of making contact. Total mystery...
  5. Never heard of that one. Back in the 80s as a secondman at Norwood, we had a turn known as diesel changeover, starting at 00:01. Quite often, the "changeover" was to take a 09 from either Stewarts Lane or Selhurst to Lovers Walk and then bring a different one back, an excrutiating low speed bone shaking round trip of over 90 miles. Whether for fuelling or not, I do not know - we used to just dump it in a siding somewhere. Pig of a job though. Thinking about it, it was quite fun startling the odd late night traveller as we clanked non-stop through Gatwick Airport at all of 24mph...
  6. I haven't visited (I'm quite happy fumbling about here) but is it free to sign up to? If so, there's nothing to lose. I guess you certainly don't have to be an active member. I believe there's a huge amount of folk who are members of RMWeb but don't ever post anything worthy of being called modelling. Sorry, I did a Larry there...
  7. In your opinion. Please don't present it as fact. Best we move on. Another missing forum member is Derek Stuart, who hasn't been online for a couple of years. Last heard of about to embark on a road trip off the beaten track down through Spain. I tend to assume the worst, but I do hope he got to make that trip.
  8. We shall have to agree to disagree there. Good modelling is no substitute for good manners. Ask those on the receiving end of one of his many tantrums. I'm grateful that 99.5% of those posting here are thoroughly nice folk, but dear God, you do get some right grumps...
  9. It's looking suspiciously similar to NBL 27414, seen in the link below... https://www.flickr.com/photos/31460388@N03/5039961080/
  10. Don't be daft - the speculation is far more interesting...
  11. Just another "thumbs up" here. I'm not the world's worst woodworker, but circumstances, time and available space meant that butchering my own boards was not an option this time round. I ordered a couple of small standard boards from Tim and had the items personally delivered by the man himself at about 7pm yesterday evening. Top quality and a joy to behold. It's almost a shame to cover them in paint, glue and pesky trains... Top notch.
  12. "Low Rail Adhesion Termination" The vertical centre hinge allows the sign to be closed when not applicable. Although, tbh, I prefer the "no vultures" theory... Edit: See here, about midway down the page: http://www.railsigns.uk/sect23page1/sect23page1.html
  13. I'd wholeheartedly agree with those that are advocating getting a professional to sort out your problems. But, when that's done, I'd also go one step further and suggest you learn how to do basic maintenance within Windows. Changing a keyboard layout to UK from US (for example) isn't too difficult. Also, simple maintenance and regular backups can prevent untold issues.
  14. I've recently had to transfer a load of stuff from an old Vista PC to a new Win10 laptop and bought a USB stick. I guesstimated that a 16GB would be ample, but thought I'd buy a 32GB to be sure. At the shop, a 64GB USB stick was only a couple of quid more so that's what I bought. I ended up transferring 50+GB. Gulp. Doesn't all the hard drive cr*p build up...? I blame all those heritage DMU videos...
  15. Popped in on Thursday last week for perhaps the first time in a year. Delighted to note they were busy, which is always a good sign. Having used the website to check availability, I made the journey specifically to purchase a Bachmann sound-fitted loco. As always, it came out of the box for a quick test run. The first one had some issues, as did the second one they tried. Third time lucky! Was told that if the purchased loco exhibited any of the issues of the first two, to bring it straight back. You simply cannot fault the service here and yes, the price paid was way less than anywhere else. Marvellous, as always.
  16. Some shots I took of the old platform at Sheringham. It may only have been intended as temporary, but looking at the construction and bearing in mind it lasted 50+ years, it's hardly beer crates. I reckon it would have lasted another 50. Yes, length was the main issue, but the width was a big restriction too. Loadings on certain trains could be quite heavy and entering and exiting the platform was an issue, especially if you add cycles, luggage etc into the equation. The ramp up to platform level on the new build seems to be in two parts to make it less steep and I'd guess the width is 50% greater. The whole thing is ugly as sin though...
  17. No, they're still intact, alas the space to use them is rather lacking. The thought of assembling a simple laser-cut baseboard kit is appealing though, but yes I admit, a little on the lazy side too... Thanks Clive.
  18. OK, a long overdue update on the Kings X layout, and it's not good news (for me)... Following a rather acrimonious split from my wife (no sympathy please, I'm much happier for it), I'm still living in Sheringham, but my daughter and I are now in a rather lovely (but small) brick/flint cottage a stone's throw from the beach. The layout is, as we speak, stranded in the former family home at the other end of town. If and when it is liberated, I have to face facts that I have no room for it here. So... at some point in the future, I am tempted to offer it free of charge to anyone on RMWeb that can do it justice and is in a position to collect. I'm not having much luck lately getting anything finished! I feel a micro on a Tim Horn 1200mm x 300mm board may be on the cards. Watch this space. Edit: ...if anyone's wondering why my previous posts appear as "Guest", it's after a rather difficult struggle to get back online to the new incarnation of RMWeb. Andy York went above and beyond to sort that out - respect.
  19. I believe so. I have 156418 on pre-order sound fitted.
  20. A few from Saturday's Sixties festival in sunny Cromer...
  21. Nice job Jim, but it's still not an old car... Devil's advocate mode <off>
  22. I've been following this thread with interest and some time ago adopted the method of painting between sleepers with PVA. The method has worked well for me using Exactoscale bases in 4mm but a while back I went "continental" and have been trying to find a method that works with closely-spaced thicker sleepered track... in my case Tillig, both wooden and concrete. As per Gordon's tests on thicker sleepered track some time ago, neat PVA will "shrink back" and leave a sparse look that will require extra attention. The following seems to work for me. Using one of those little Metcalfe fine-tip bottles, add neat PVA (in my case Screwfix own-brand) between sleepers, working on about 100-150mm of plain track at a time. I use Green Scenes GS408, but I imagine Woodland Scenics "fine" would display the same characteristics. Using a tea spoon, give the PVA a good covering of ballast and immediately hoover up the excess. Leave alone for an hour, no more, no less. When you come back, you should see that the area covered looks "wet and white" but has not yet begun to shrink back. Add another sparse scattering of ballast and again, immediately hoover up. This time, leave alone overnight and the "shrink-back" effect is much less noticeable. Not perfect, granted, but much better.
  23. I have a horrible feeling you're going to be disappointed. I bought a pack of IL-715 concrete sleeper bases for use with Code 143 FB rail a while back (pipe-dream plank that came to nothing) and it's good stuff. Reminds me of simply a bigger version of the OO Exactoscale bases which I've used quite a bit and are imho much superior to OO RTR flexi track, at least if you want concrete sleepers. Buy the bases, thread on the rail and, voila, job done. Just don't forget to snip the webs on curves unless you want dog-legs. Ask me how I know, go on...
  24. However deep they think their pockets will need to be, they will need to be deeper by a factor of 2x, 4x, 6x or probably even more. I'm absolutely delighted that it's been "rescued" from where it's sat for so many years and it would be a fantastic sight restored. I do wish them well but can't help thinking it will need to be a complete rebuild rather than a restoration. The pictures in the link speak for themselves.
