  1. I tend to save the images now (just for personal use/interest and after the big rmweb image death thing). anyway when I saved it the file name came up with 1973 in it, looks about right ? none of the buildings left now . hawthorn ave's completely different these days P.S the railway cottages behind the signal box have no front doors onto hawthorn ave??
  2. many thanks BR traction instructor. also sorry to justin aswell
  3. hi BR traction instructor nice work, did some of those chassis in 4mm for my coil j wagons . I take it yours are O gauge ?? ,I also really like the wagon makers plates, who makes them ? =wish someone them in 4mm many thanks
  4. if you at least contact the seller and explain the issue, he'll be at least weary of buying from said person again !
  5. hi all after buying my unimat (must by 15+ years ago) decided to have a play with it. well the belt was on its last legs but it nearly did the "test" job then the motor started running slow and getting VERY hot and smoke!= its dead, plus the previous owner had "repaired" it with a new cable. As I don't use it much and even then only on small brass/plastic etc i went for the cheap+easy fix. so after a bit of research I got a cheap sewing machine motor from ebay it was counter clockwise but took 5 mins to change round and didn't even have to get the soldering iron out the shaft the same dia as the old one so pulley will fit ok. just need to make a bracket or adapt the unimat one to fit the motor more securely (its not lose at moment though plus the new belt holds it tight) the new motor will fit nicely inside the old motor case with a few shims so "may" try that when my brain works it out !!!. the old case will need drilling for more ventilation I already own a sewing machine foot pedal I converted for my home made RSU (just cut the sewing machine plug off and fitted a 3 pin socket) so that acts as a on/off switch. Don't know how long the new motor will last looks a bit basic but ok ish .but it has a metal case and is really easy to dismantle(and put back together lol) at least so we'll see. plus I'm going to try and leave the lathe out to encourage me to make use of it more and if I do then I may consider doing a better upgrade with the scooter motor+psu
  6. Is that ideal standard in the background (love 16ton minerals lol) regards the black arrow coach wasn't there a tartan arrow service that ran to Scotland ? think Hornby lima etc did a cct coach ?
  7. lovely weathering detail .like the fact the coach window all iced up and they've left the door window open !!!
  8. many thanks fat controller .I'll do that (SAE and postal orders how we forget how things have changed!)
  9. LOL =bit of a big book 17000 !(got most of the books he's published except the "acquired" ones bit to early for me) is it worth me trying the Albion road address ? old school letter ?
  10. GDPR =??? Albion road is the one in the books i've got too
  11. yes there the ones . gdw/bulk carriers gdw/gen.merchadise vans gdw/special vans gdw/21-24.5t mins gdw/21-24.5 hops gdw/6 .gdw/8 plus the letter i've got says he was going to do ABN/steel-carriers etc but i'll have any really !!! the ones i've got are GDW/iron-ore permanent way hoppers , PW opens, PW rail&sleeper pipe and tube 16t minerals GDW/1 to 4 and GDW11 plus the letter i've got says about his 17000 B/W negatives of wagons alone !! same he never put them on the internet like Paul Bartlett
  12. does David still do his data files ?? there was an address in the back of one of his "working wagons" books but that will be years old now ! I've got a few 16 ton minerals/coil wagons etc and still find them really useful today if he doesn't wound anyone be prepared to "pdf" any for me and I'd do the same for others !!(if that's ok with david) on a side note someone's selling his old photo's on ebay (got a couple myself) and wonder if he's retiring/downscaling etc =which wound be a shame as he was the one of the leading "wagon" experts out there many thanks all
  13. well done really good results .always said experiment on "cheap" wagons .Dapol sell unpainted wagons cheap also I take it you also know about the "salt weathering method " I prefer brush weathering when i can ,i always consider too much of a fath having to set up airbrush booth (cardboard box+fan) mix paints and then clean and put away ! i do paint/weather in enamel and maybe should consider trying acrylic's
  14. used a few times .had no problems ordering stuff quite good really .maybe just a bit slower on the reply front ?
  15. as someone who also travels there by train the bus station is just next door , but you have to ask someone for the "bay" number as it varies (if you see a load of blokes with backpacks ask them!!!) its free and runs quite regular (10/20 mins) .I've never had any real problems
  16. the hopper wagon behind the loco in the first picture looks interesting!!!
  17. Firstly many thanks to you all for your postings as i really enjoy looking at this topic and find it very informative . there used to be a good forum on hull daily mail (i think?) about old hull in general street scenes /docks//railway/etc but it closed down does anybody know of a good replacement or where those members went too !! remember seeing some good photos of hawthorne ave level crossing in the 1960's and haltemprice street crossing (the old hull to cottingham line) and chalk lane yard many thanks all
  18. finished the procor 80 just the weathering to do .quite like the cleanish look may just have to do a light weather (not like me) started my most epic build to date the MAT cartic 4 set .did start by hacking the Hornby one up ,but decided to scratch build seemed easier in the end considering its just strip glued together it is quite strong (dropped at least once) and has stayed true and squire (well ish) so far got the mesh for the decks from ema supplies (not cheap),thought it was too fine at first but now fitted looks good to me and its aluminium really easy to cut thread plate is from jtt supplies (n gauge) and is miles better than the slaters stuff the sides where made from 20th strip, think I'll have thicken up as per prototype to 40th got to figure out how to do the piggyback bogies to both look good and work well!!! should keep me busy for a few weeks (more like months) sort of wish I'd started with a comtic/autic set first i.e less to build and looks an easier build anyway!
  19. did you get sorted john on the dust issue ? other than using thin plastic sheeting (builders merchants /screwfix etc) to cover the layout I was watching the shopping channel on itv at 3 am !!! and did see a air purifier which cleans the air but also ionises it and gives the air a charge and is supposed clean/remove the dust not got one myself but was thinking about maybe getting one (i smoke too much) hope this is of help .at least something to research
  20. VERY SAD NEWS some have said not many people bother scratch building but the last show i went to (doncaster pre plague ) eileens stand was constantly busy .(have ordered a lot since then) although they did have at least 2 "staff"(may have been more) working . I surpose the amount of stock they have to hold and somewhere to keep it =business rates etc all adds up . shame but could not someone take over in some form ? as for squires ,yes there ordering system is a bit old but it works well enough for me =never had any complaints
  21. sorry the post was a bit brief =having one of those days !!.camera decided it doesn't like taking photos (worked ok last time)pictures grainy ?? had to take pic's on my phone in the end finished my triang cemflo fleet at last (may build one more) the procar 80 sides where built by drawing a plan out and taping to a ply sheet then the plastic strip pinned in place (at least if I'm wrong both sides are the same wrong lol) into car transporters at moment .going to hack the Hornby cartic 4 into a better set may use the lima ones as Centre units .looking to do proper expermet/chequer plate for the floors but having fun finding fine scale versions at mo.(the slaters one looks way to big =better for 7mm). will be doing mat transport ones as my farther worked for mat (yes i know revolution trains are going to do them in 4mm but always been on my to do list and what to see how mine compare) also going to do the early comtic /autic sets may use the HO two car sets made by various manufacturers plus like the idea of building those loading ramps (the ones built from old coach underframes)=nice varied fleet
  22. just looked been two years since last post!! have been busy honest been doing some tunny's and grampus wagons and these converted to p4 wheels .had problems with the drill bit cutting one way and making the axles out of square changed the end pipes and thinned the end plates down and a few other details the pcb was made using a Bachmann tanker underframe and had to make "v" tank body as i didn't have any spares from an old Hornby body the last wagon is a procar 80 made from one of those lima/Hornby car transporters .happy with the top handrails 40 thou square rod and 0.3 wire ,each rail had to be cut and drilled . nearly finished just paint and transfers to go ,going the paint in the toleman colours
  23. same as a above comments plus its east Yorkshire = 3 days of sun at best!!! nice to see the flower box and a proper waiting room (not a bus shelter like now) and why did they do the fencing at an angle ? (another thing that seems to have vanished )
  24. cheers I got maquett pvc version from Eileen's but I think it's a bit large but maybe easier to work with !
