  1. The newer chassis are alot better much finer detail. Found this out after getting a load of older hea,s which i keep putting off converting to hba,s with the older 16 leaf springs
  2. The weathering is absolutely spot on. Lovely work but the one thing that sticks out to me is the thickness of the brake lever it must be 12 inches thick in real scale! Please note not trying to rain on your workmanship
  3. I think the hoods where fitted from new. It was only later as they got damaged etc that they'd have been removed. On pauls wagon site they show still on in the 80s but some gone in the 90s. I think they would have travelled with the hood up either empty or loaded. I would like to model one with the hood laid down
  4. wow indeed .miles better than what i could do on my best day .hats tipped sir !!!!!!

  7. Starfish where ordinary ex gwr 10 ton ballast opens but as they disappeared around late 70s early 80s br could have reused the name
  8. In the 70s the ballast used up north was steel slag with little holes in it. As kids we used to throw it on the ground and it smelt a bit like stink bombs. From memory it was dark grey to black. At least two places sold it from scunthorpe as advertised in a br permanent way report book I've got
  9. I,m one of those people who hoards stuff for ten years. Then has a good clear out Then two years later i spend a couple of days looking for said items only to conclude i must of got rid i,ll have to get some more
  10. The only guess i,ve got is the expo ballast is Cork based and has expanded with the water The outer edges look ok through Maybe keep it low between the sleepers then after wetting and pva top up if necessary Only suggestions though i, ve no previous experience

  17. I have been experimenting with various ballast types and have tried builders silver sand dyed black with morter dye. It looks good for black ash. Some have used play sand, foundry sand, grano chippings. There are very different types of silver sand so you may find a colour that suits.
