First time visiting SVR and NYMR - any tips?
papagolfjuliet replied to Lacathedrale's topic in Preservation
This is it: http://www.platform3ltd.co.uk/ There's also the castle, and the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul which has the best preserved collection of pre-Reformation wall paintings in the UK: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Peter_and_St_Paul's_Church,_Pickering -
Never said it was.

Should we whitewash history on our layouts?
papagolfjuliet replied to JZ's topic in Modelling Questions, Help and Tips
Allo Allo is of course hugely popular in France too, and by all accounts whenever the BBC offered to German TV execs they watched it, loved it, and sais that while they found it hilarious they didn't dare buy it. Even stranger: Mind Your Language is popular in India. Like, Star Wars popular. -

On a related note I am somewhat surprised that a fuss has not been kicked up about the HLF awarding the Middleton Railway funding to conserve an engine named after a slave owner whose portrait in the National Museum of Wales was recently the subject of much controversy. https://www.middletonrailway.org.uk/development-projects/conserving-picton/picton-shelter-preparation https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Picton Just goes to show that in life as in art there isn't a great deal of consistency in these things. -
The previous owner is unhappy, although members of the S&D Trust may wish to have a sour laugh at him bleating about 'business respect of words and agreement.' https://www.railadvent.co.uk/2022/08/jonathan-jones-pratt-releases-update-on-7027-thornbury-castle.html

As of two days ago, 'Beachy Head' is a wheeled and boilered loco. A sight for sore eyes indeed. https://www.flickr.com/photos/169826404@N05/52288808477/

Bachmann Fletcher Jennings 0-4-2ST "Talyllyn" in OO9
papagolfjuliet replied to nathan70000's topic in Bachmann
As quite a rough and ready model the Bachmann Peter Sam would I think be a useful sacrificial basis for a model of London Transport's standard gauge 'Tattoo.' -
Not exactly a smaller supplier, but I note with interest that LEGO has announced a fairly decent looking Gauge 1/1:32 Hall (and a frankly terrible Mk.1) as part of its Harry Potter range. Get weaving, kit bashers. https://www.lego.com/en-gb/product/hogwarts-express-collectors-edition-76405?icmp=LP-SHH-Standard-HP_Hero_76405_Nessie_Video_LP-EX-HP-V9NS4IDBRZ

The seller is commendably honest. "I have no clue what the builder was trying to achieve when he built this." You and me both, chief.

Whoever built this atrocity seems to have worked forwards from the tender and, while he was just about paying attention when he started, by the time he got to the business end he was completely away with the fairies. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/334210593258?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160727114228%26meid%3De99f853e3956453e854e44e0650d96d4%26pid%3D100290%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D334210593258%26itm%3D334210593258%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D2060778&_trksid=p2060778.c100290.m3507

Sharp Stewart NG locomotives in Britain
papagolfjuliet replied to eldomtom2's topic in Narrow Gauge Prototype
Just bumping this thread as North Bay Railway Engineering has posted a few photos of the completed 'Blyth' and she's a real bobby dazzler. https://www.facebook.com/North-Bay-Railway-Engineering-Services-222968755125074/photos/pcb.1081911619230779/1081911445897463 -
By my reckoning the remaining operational Mk.1s consist of three suburbans and seven corridor coaches, which should be enough to maintain the LlR's usual two train service. I dare say the DMUs could also be used as hauled stock in warm weather, much as the NYMR used to do with its Gloucester units.

Two of the Llangollen-based LNER carriages have joined the LNERCA's collection and will be moving to Embsay: http://www.lnerca.org/home/news-and-updates/?fbclid=IwAR365y00_Fuaw3oVfMUc1aNykM4DDcne5fSdb1nh__gTtA7WuaxPSaAbpU0 In addition, the PLC-owned items which are to be auctioned have been listed here: https://www.lsh.co.uk/assetadvisory/online-auctions/llangollen-railway-plc-auction?fbclid=IwAR1_-TCAfLfAxsa_8ZhB86TkGDXjMbdUO8LR9Q4fPmcCiIo7YejFKkqiFEo NB: The 'Mk. 3A' is actually a Mk.1 on 3A bogies, and the 'Class 13' is ex-ICI English Electric Class 11 lookalike 'Davy.'

I note that the Trust has put all three of its steam engines - 7754, Austin No.1, and Jennifer - on the market. https://www.therailwayhub.co.uk/59551/llangollen-railway-plea-to-save-welsh-heritage-line/

Charben's made both in more or less the correct scale, to tie in with the film. You can pick tatty ones up fairly cheaply on ebay in sufficiently good condition to form the basis of a detailing project. https://www.vintagebritishdiecasts.co.uk/3index/cha1-4.htm

Railways and Preservation - Swanage An Environmental Disaster?
papagolfjuliet replied to Crisis Rail's topic in Preservation
Anything of Penrhyn origin is likely to stay put, but I'd expect Vesta and Haydock and Beckton No.1 and Hawarden and Kettering Furnaces No.3 to move elsewhere. -
Railways and Preservation - Swanage An Environmental Disaster?
papagolfjuliet replied to Crisis Rail's topic in Preservation
Catch it while you can. The National Trust is currently carrying out a 'review' of the railway museum, which will probably end with all the engines except 'Fire Queen' and 'Charles' moving elsewhere. Always assuming of course that they can get them out. -
Railways and Preservation - Swanage An Environmental Disaster?
papagolfjuliet replied to Crisis Rail's topic in Preservation
I've heard the pre-FfR revival Porthmadog described as 'A graveyard with streetlights.' It's a very well set up town, but without the three railways I doubt whether it would be the tourism hub it has become. I offer you the example of Denbigh, which is much handier for some major English conurbations and is one of the UK's finest mediaeval walled towns, but which has next to no tourist industry. Even on a nice day in midsummer the number of grockles in Denbigh can usually be counted on the fingers of one offensive gesture. -
When did Model Railways (nee MRN) cease publication?
papagolfjuliet replied to stewartingram's topic in Other Magazines
If memory serves it was owned and edited by Pat Hammond, at least initially. -

She definitely isn't Bessie Jones. Her Welsh pronunciation is abysmal. Edited: It's an actress named Louie Emory: https://www.festipedia.org.uk/wiki/The_Phantom_Light -

I don't think anybody is writing it off. My understanding is that the railway is 'safe' and that services are expected to resume shortly. Nevertheless it is clear that it was the engineering business which sunk the PLC. The accounts for the past several years show two things: that the works made a loss which grew year on year, and that year on year it took on more staff and more jobs in a failed bid to dig itself out of the hole.
