Which one was it, PM the gist of it please.

  2. Just a quick update, painting is coming on slowly as all parts had to seriously cleaned and than primed. I've used an etching primer applied thinly a layer at a time, with drying taking place in the plate warmer on the trusty Rayburn between coats, giving a really tough baked hard finish. Because the coach comes apart all the different elements were painted seperately and this is the first time it has all been fitted together. There are still a couple of parts to fit, namely a dynamo belt, the main door hinge, and couplings. You can see from the photo that a couple of bits are still rough and ready and I am nowhere near finished painting, then of course we have to whole transfer thing and some serious weathering, and finally a coat of varnish to protect it all. I am in the process of hand painting certain parts, and patching a few bits that have escaped the airbrush. The body isn't fully fastened to the underframe yet, tightening the nuts underneath is a pig of a job, and I only have one of four properly tight, the rest just being loose in case it has to come apart again for some reason. I've gone for blue headstocks and am still debating blue vs black solebars, mind you photos show then as a fairly uniform brown colour so any choice is probably arbitrary.

  5. I must admit I hadn't planned to post any build pictures, but I suppose I could stretch to a few when I have finished, and paint a fitted wagon in unfitted grey. There is precedent for it as there is at least one photo on Paul Bartletts fine site of a 21 tonner which has had a vac cylinder retrofitted and as it has been relatively recently painted it appears that nobody has bothered repainting it bauxite, not surprising when it would appear that the life of the paint work was measured in months at most! If you want photos of an LNER hopper that isn't well rotted I can get you a few (well a BR build to the LNER design). Also if you feel really brave and want to tackle a brass kit Piercys one is truly superb, I think there are some photos of mine on here somewhere.
  6. Tell you what Mr Worsdell, if you hadn't shown me the pictures last week of these I would have questioned whether they were right or not, they are truly a funny looking little thing!
  7. That is one thing I have noticed with Parkside kits, they tend to be fairly good, but occasionally do the most bizarre things, like supplying plastic rod where you would expect a bit of brass, I am building a BR 21t hopper and have been supplied with a 3 inch piece of plastic rod with no explanation as to where it goes and nowhere obvious to put it! I'm going to use it as part of my conversion of this vehicle into a vacuum braked example, but it does seem a bit weird.

  10. Well, a place for my GUV has already been cleared on the mantlepiece! I see what David means about detail levels, I assembled a small parcels set today comprising an Easybuild DPU, a slaters stove B and the MMP GUV, and a selection of fitted vans (SPVs, Vanwides and the like), and yes, in a long train the eye struggles to pick out all the details. But I realistically only want to run 1-3 vehicles together anyway, for me the enjoyment is the time invested in a challenging model and the sense of accomplishment when it is completed rather than trying to get a scale length express passenger set. Each to his own. I'm still waiting for a release date on the bone wagon though, you know, the one with the TOPS code BRK.
  11. Personally I think it is hard to beat MMP stock in terms of detail, but unless you have a fair chunk of spare time available they could take a while build. I am now up to 210 hours with an MMP GUV and am now at the painting stage - the result is truly fantastic but for the average person who has a life to be getting on with 210 hours probably does represent a good years work. The MMP coaches are more expensive than JLTRT but I find the MMP offering that little bit more challenging than the JLTRT equivalent, so MMP gets my vote every time. Easybuild does score very well as the Mk1s a decent for the price and are exactly that - easy to build, but I am a bit of a masochist when it comes to building models and unless I have to do at least some keyhole surgery I'm not happy!

  13. Very nice Mr Wurzell, that coal cage looks seriously impressive, it seems to finish off the the loco nicely. Are you going to weather it or leave it as it? And have you considered a fine rail blue colour for it?
  14. wife went shopping and I asked her to get a tin of air for the airbrush. She brought me back a hairbrush and some styling mousse! I must be missing something here.

  24. There is just something about rail blue, it just does things to me. Anyway, it's going to take be probably a week just to clean it up before I even think about painting, I suspect that I will do this in the same sequence as I built it, start at the bottom and work up. Mind you, the colour scheme on the box is quite attractive too.
