  1. I think that too. I don't have an IRS handbook for that period so I can't confirm it but I think there was one there in 1979. I think it was then Ribblesdale Cement, I'm assuming the location was the same. David

  7. Thanks very much Phil. I thought it was about time I got a loco number wrong again! David
  8. Some photos taken at Gurtnellen for today. Gurtnellen is on the north ramp of the Gotthard,to the north of Wassen. The photos were taken a year after the summer floods of 1987 so repair work was still going on and there is a lot of newly exposed rock visible. As you can see the weather was very dull. Single line working was in force to the south of the station as the flood damage required extensive repairs to the trackbed. 11. A few from around Waterloo and Clapham Junction for today. Most of my photo's (and Dad's) were taken whatever the weather if we happened to be near a railway - so some do look a bit drab. I always found that no matter how dismal the weather is a trip to watch and photograph trains always lifts my spirits. It was even more noticeable when I was still working when taking photos was a good antidote to the trials and tribulations of the job, so I took (and still take) photos in almost any type of weather. 12. I'm not convinced that the cab roofs were always grey from new. The locos were delivered from 1965 when it was only just being decided to use Rail blue and grey. It is very difficult to tell from colour photos on flickr (or elsewhere) as very often the roofs are overexposed, so you cannot tell whether they are grey or white. However there are a number of mine and Dad's photos of 86s in this thread and on flickr, a number taken from overbridges. Some are clearly grey, but others which are not over exposed, look white, certainly in comparison to the grey dirt on parts of the roof To be honest I doubt we'll ever know for sure. However almost all the references I can find, both in print and on the web suggest white as the roof colour, when first built. Incidentally the original colour of the locos seems open to debate, some sources state rail blue, others electric blue. Most of the photos I have are clearly rail blue, but in one or two early ones the loco looks considerably paler than blue grey coaches David

  19. A few industrial photos today taken at Blyth Bates colliery. Also two taken on the branch. The final one, with a Class 56, was taken after the pit was closed and the coal elevators were then used to export opencast coal for a few years before the branch was closed. 20. I've just looked at some more of my photos (mainly ones) not yet on here. There is one which looks as though it may not have "1" on the relevant doors. But I've also noticed that when the 1st class part of the coach is further away in the photo the "1" doesn't show up well, so they may be there but not visible on the scan. David
  21. John, Southern photos will keep on appearing from time to time, I've just been looking through a batch to use at some future date. David
  22. I've just put three somewhat unusual photos of a Furka Oberalp loco working on the RhB in another thread, so I thought I'd ad them here. In 1992 the RhB were short of motive power and hired a loco from the FO. I was fortunate enough to see it on two days while I was in the area in July 1992. I say fortunate as I had no idea it was there. 25. It is supposed to be painted in the standard brown the SBB used before they painted electrics green, but I don't know a match for it. I suspect (in fact I am pretty sure) that the colour balance in the photo is tending toward the magenta. I wasn't able to rebalance it before I posted it as I then got all the other colours wrong. I also think the paint on the loco had faded over the years it had been there. I think the one in the photo below is a more accurate colour rendering, there is certainly less colour cast. It also shows the difference in the appearance of the colour in sunlight and shade. You can also see it is not the colour the shunting locos were painted in 1988! Arth Goldau Ae3/6ii 10439 29th July 88 C9719 Edit: Post 31 on this thread may help: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/33463-questions-of-swiss-colour-and-french-numbers/page-2 Also this link to Phoenix Precision who say they have a few tins of various colours available: http://www.phoenix-paints.co.uk/cherry-paints/sale-items/european-colours.html and: http://www.phoenix-paints.co.uk/cherry-paints/sale-items/european-colours/rhymney-railway-coach-wagon-pack-10.html Second edit. One thing I learned from photographing a lot of Swiss locos - the colours vary, they also patch paint which highlights just how much colours fade/weather. You don't see it much on my photos of brown SBB locos as they are preserved ones, but the green ones varied a lot. So do some of the red ones if you look closely at where paint has been touched up. David
