  1. It is a 114, I've just checked another photo taken of it - already on this thread and also mis-captioned as a 108 (I've corrected it now). Thanks very much once again. David
  2. I really must remember to type the correct loco number in the captions - I had it right in my notes too! David

  5. A few from the Tanfield Railway this afternoon. They were taken yesterday at the "Legends of Industry" weekend, with visiting locos "Mech Navvies 71515", an RSH Austerity from the Pontypool and Blaenavion Railway and Kitson A No5 from the North Tyneside Railway. I'll add them to the thread in the order I took them over the next few days. The first batch are all taken at Marley Hill, where the loco shed, carriage shed and stock sidings are situated. Note: As usual all the photos were taken from locations accessible to anyone. DSC_6523 Marley Hill A 5 andTwizell Twizell was built by Stephensons in 1891. DSC_6541Marley Hill A No5 Heading north to Sunniside. The line in the foreground is on the trackbed of the Bowes Railway which had a flat crossing with the Tanfield Railway - the cutting on the far side has been filled in and is now the car park. The line is now the headshunt for the loco shed. Edited (several times) for punctuation and spelling. My keyboard seems to have an aversion to double letters. David

  10. Today would have been Dad's 89th birthday so I thought I'd post a few of his photos as well today. They are on the High Dyke branch and British Steel lines. He took the first four while he was managing the workshops at Sewstern and the ex British Steel lines between Stainby Glebe and Buckminster Junction. During this time Sewstern works sectioned Ellerman lines for the NRM as well as carrying out various other work both for railways and other engineering firms. The completion of Ellerman Lines took place at Market Overton, where the final photo was taken. 11. A visit to Thun on the BLS in Switzerland today. Today, as it happens, we won't see any BLS trains! Thun was also served by the Emmental Burgdorf Thun Bahn with it's red trains. The EBT formed a part of the RM (Regionalverkehr Mittelland), which is now merged with the BLS. 12. A few photos from Morpeth today. As many of you know Morpeth has a sharp curve at the western end of the station with a 50mph speed limit so trains travel quite slowly, useful for photography in bad weather in the days of slide film. It is still the junction for the Blyth and Tyne route to Newcastle and North Blyth/Lynemouth. The original junction allows direct running to the south from the Blyth and Tyne - i.e. it faces west, the new line, built when the Metro was being built, allows direct running from the north onto the Blyth and Tyne. Morpeth was also the junction for the NBR Wansbeck Valley line through Scotsgap to Reedsmouth (or Redesmouth) with the branch to Rothbury from Scotsgap Junction. 13. I'm pleased you are still enjoying them. There are quite a lot more GER photos, as and when I get them sorted out to put on here. I don't think think I have any around Gidea Park - both my and Dad's photo indexes don't show anything around there. Regards, David
  14. It's the ordinary BR blue (but it's an early one!). It is from an Agfa slide which sometimes does odd things to blues. The small yellow panel always makes it look a bit odd as well, then there is the grey roof which is unusually pale. It is just about impossible to "correct" some slides to get the colour right - it depends so much on the original film type and how it was stored. I also suspect that some films were better processed than others depending on when they last replaced the various chemicals. My own feeling is that you should never assume a colour on an old slide is "correct". When I am working on old photos I always keep looking out of the window to check the colours of grass and sky and have even been known to look at models to get somewhere near to the "right" colour when the slide has badly faded (or gone pink, magenta or green!). David

  16. A few photos on the way north from Keighley today. In the 60s and 70s, long before the advent of the mobile phone and internet, you never knew quite what would turn up when you were standing on a platform or by the lineside. You couldn't get hold of current working timetables either so it was usually a case of photographing whatever turned up. Now and then, if you were near a signalbox, the signalman would tell you if anything interesting was about. 23. Sorry Chris, I don't know anything more about the coach. The only other photo I have of a similar crane and coach is below, taken after the sleeping car train derailment at Morpeth. Morpeth self propelled track laying crane and coach 25th June 84 C6566 It might be worth looking at Paul Bartlet's photos. David
  24. I have four others, reproduced below. If anyone wonders why photos taken on the same day have non sequential file numbers it's because I used two cameras at that time.
