  1. I've used just under 3,000 photos on this thread so far and about 470 on the european thread. That's a bit under 10% of what Dad and I took up to 2003 on slide film, so there's quite a lot still to come. David
  2. It really was waiting to take the sleepers ecs out to Heaton from the northernmost east bay, at 07.23 . It was quite usual to have two (or more) trains in a platform. I think I'd just got off the 143 having come in to Newcastle from Morpeth, I had a weeks North East rover that summer. It was not a good morning at the station, a Pacer had failed right on the crossing at the east end of the station. I was heading for Grosmont via the coast line to Middlesbrough so made a quick decision to go via Darlington instead. David
  3. The first three photos were taken in the early morning in the Netherlands at Eindewege near Vliissingen (Flushing) just after landing from the ferry which ran from Sheerness to Vlissingen. What's all this about very hot weather? Here on the Northumberland coast it reached 20C in the shade in my garden this afternoon, with a lovely fresh sea breeze. David
  11. Paul, Thanks very much for the information, I've added it as a possible number to the caption. I wish now I'd kept more detailed notes of the locos I saw, but it didn't seem important at the time!. I,m pleased you enjoy the photos. David
  12. It would have been long before 1800. From the image number I took it before I went into the Steam Centre, so it wouldhave been mid morning. Such shadows as are visible on the cooling towers also suggest morning. But thanks for the suggestion. It seems to have been one of "those" days when I made very few notes as my slide catalogue has very little detail of the BR stock I saw. David
  13. Many thanks to both of you for the identification. Sometimes I wonder if I want to go back to places now they look so different! David
  14. St Omer, not too far inland from Calais today. The photos were taken in the summer of 1978 on the way back to catch a ferry from Calais. We stayed a night in St Omer as we hadn't booked a crossing and decided to cross the next morning rather than rush and try to catch a late ferry and then have to drive back to Essex during the night. It's as well we hadn't booked a crossing as we would have missed it by over a week as while staying in Les Gets we had met some French friends who had a chalet in Morzine so we stayed for a week with them. 19. Many thanks. That site will prove useful as I continue working through my photos. There will be more KESR photos from time to time - I think I have around 100 photos from the 1970s, so far there are (I think) around 35 on this thread. David

  22. This afternoon's photos were taken at the Kent and East Sussex Railway in the 1970s. 23. The only reference I can find about "LW" markings on dmus is in the Scottish Region Sectional Appendix (mine is from 1969). Unbder "Working of multiple unit diesel trains" it states: 1. A weight of more than 75 tones (including tail traffic vehicles) must not be permitted behind the drawgear of the last operative motor car marked LW. 2 Where the last operative motor car is not marked LW this restriction applies to the leading drawgear of any vehicle marked LW coupled behind it. 3. Where a vehicle marked LW is being hauled DEAD in a loco hauled train, the limit of 75 tons will apply to the leading drawgear of that vehicle. 4. The instructions are based on drawgear considerations only. Local limitations of tail traffic due to power, gradients and train timings will be specified individually as required. 5. Where vehicles are not marked LW normal coaching stock practices apply so far as drawgear loading is concerned. The Eastern Region (Southern area) Sectional Appendix from 1st Oct 1972 does not mention "LW" but gives extensive details of tail loads for different types of dmu with allowable tailoads ranging from 17 to 72 tons gross. I think the Bachmann plain blue 108 has "LW" on it's blue squares. David
  24. This evening we are in Chamonix, France, looking at the Chemin de Fer Chamonix Montenvers which is narrow gauge, taking passengers to see the Mer de Glace, a glacier.
