The date is correct, I've just checked my slide catalogue. Dad photographed the same train (he was standing next to me) and has recorded the same date. Fortunately we both catalogued or photos in date order as soon as they came back from the slide processors. This evening the photos are from the ECML north of Grantham. The first three are taken at the site of Barkston station which was a favourite location for both Dad and I. This evening we are at Degersheim, on the Bodensee Toggenburg Bahn in Switzerland. Some were taken at the station, others at the nearby Weissenbach viaduct on a misty morning. Switzerland again today. The first three photos this evening show the Kander viaduct on the BLS just south of Frutigen. The original is single track, when the line was doubled a modern viaduct was built alongside. The other two photos are at Leissigen, on the BLS line from Spiez to Interlaken. He's the signalman. There was (is) a road underbridge at Manningtree, but high vehicles had to use the level crossing. I think the gates were not worked from the box, but someone may know more about it. David

I think that in the early days the preserved railways saw a need to be clearly different from BR - after all they were using locos and stock which had been in normal use on BR until only a year or two earlier. I'm also not sure if BR required some sort of livery change as a condition of sale in those days. Perhaps someone else may know. David
