  1. This afternoon's photos were taken at the Kent and East Sussex Railway in the 1970s. On my earlier visits the line only ran from Tenterden to Rolvenden, in 1977 it was extended to Wittersham Road. Tenterden Hunslet 23 Holman F Stephens 19th June 76 C2793 Tenterden Peckett 0-4-0T 12 Marcia Sept 78 C4135 Tenterden Terrier 10 Sutton 26th Dec 79 C4916 Rolvenden Manning Wardle 17 Arthur ex APCM Aug 75 C2403 Rolvenden Terrier 3 Bodiam Aug 75 C2399 Wittersham Road Hunslet 24 William Austen July 79 C4626 David
  2. The only reference I can find about "LW" markings on dmus is in the Scottish Region Sectional Appendix (mine is from 1969). Unbder "Working of multiple unit diesel trains" it states: 1. A weight of more than 75 tones (including tail traffic vehicles) must not be permitted behind the drawgear of the last operative motor car marked LW. 2 Where the last operative motor car is not marked LW this restriction applies to the leading drawgear of any vehicle marked LW coupled behind it. 3. Where a vehicle marked LW is being hauled DEAD in a loco hauled train, the limit of 75 tons will apply to the leading drawgear of that vehicle. 4. The instructions are based on drawgear considerations only. Local limitations of tail traffic due to power, gradients and train timings will be specified individually as required. 5. Where vehicles are not marked LW normal coaching stock practices apply so far as drawgear loading is concerned. The Eastern Region (Southern area) Sectional Appendix from 1st Oct 1972 does not mention "LW" but gives extensive details of tail loads for different types of dmu with allowable tailoads ranging from 17 to 72 tons gross. I think the Bachmann plain blue 108 has "LW" on it's blue squares. David
  3. This evening we are in Chamonix, France, looking at the Chemin de Fer Chamonix Montenvers which is narrow gauge, taking passengers to see the Mer de Glace, a glacier. 6. I have a few at Jenbach, I'll have to find them and work on them to remove colour casts etc, so it will not be in the next couple of days - I generally try to keep at least a week ahead with preparing photos. I'll try to do them soon. - it's about time I got some more Austrian ones done! David

  8. Yes, it really is green. The second coach is maroon, the third is blue/grey. Both the first and second coach are carrying roofboards. The headcode is wrong for it, but according to Dad's notes the time he took the photo was around the time the Thames Clyde was due. A bit of a mystery. In the previous year's working timetable 1M91 was the headcode for an Edinburgh (dep 11.55) to St Pancras working, from June to end Sept. David
  9. That's the one I was least sure about. It could well have been D22. David
  10. Many thanks Howie I should know that! I have written caption for the Thames Clyde lots of times both on here and flickr so goodness knows why I got it wrong this time (again). David

  14. Some photos taken at Assmannshausen on the east bank of the Rhine, in Germany for today. I sometimes stayed a night or two there when travelling to and from Switzerland by car. A few years ago I was looking through some old family photo albums and found photos of my grandparents there in the late 1920s. They had stayed in the same hotel as I did. 24. At present it has steel supports outside on the front wall, inside there is scaffolding behind the front wall. The shed is still in use. I understand that the intention is to carry out remedial work in due course. David
