  2. Time now for this evening's batch which are once again from Swayfield, showing more ECML trains in the 70s - I hope no one is bored by them yet, I have a lot more to come in due course. Anyone following this thread must have a pretty good idea of the areas where Dad and I lived at various times. 3. I've been trying to find out more about this, it may well have been a condition of sale by BR. Also, as mentioned earlier in the thread it helped differentiate the early preserved railways from BR. In "Worth Valley Revival", published by the Preservation Society in 1983 there is a reference on Page 38 to liveries. In April 1965 it was decided that authentic liveries should be applied to historic locomotives and coaches but not to the remainder. No attempt was made at the time to decided which locos and stock fitted each category, nor was there a decision on the livery to apply to non historic vehicles, that was left to the Society's Council to decide. The Metroplitan coaches were painted Brittania Blue and Primrose Yellow, too much work was needed on the coaches to consider a teak finish at the time. The paint was to preserve the vehicles from further deterioration. Some vehicles (mainly coaches) ran in their original livery for some time in order not to spend money for the sake of it. Obviously things have a changed a lot since those very early days. David
  4. The first batch for today are from the early years of preservation at the Keighley and Worth Valley. Keighley train in platform. 5. The brake van has now been built - or perhaps I should say cobbled together. Like a lot of early etched brass kits some bits didn't fit very well. On folding up the body I discovered one side is very slightly longer than the other, checking back on one built many years ago I found the same problem had occurred. The axlebox and spring castings weren't too good either. So rather than do a detailed account I just built it and photographed it this morning. There are still things to do, including straightening the handrails and a bit of general tidying up of rough bits and touching up paint. Running on the layout it looks OK from about 4' away. I also built a Parkside kit at the same time. It doesn't usually take as long to build relatively simple wagons, other "important" things kept getting in the way. David Edited to correct the obligatory spelling mistake.
  6. At the time I knew which steam loco it was but didn't write it down. Now, of course, I can't remember. David
  7. I don't know about the Crianlarich photo, I'd assumed it was water for train heating boiler purposes. This is a closer photo. Crianlarich 37259 & 37121 excursion Newcastle to Fort William onthe return journey 11th May 85 C6897 David
  8. Jonny, Many thanks for the headcode information. This one has always puzzled me as well, though I think I have at least one more Pilmoor photo with a similar headcode (but cannot find it at the moment). It was probably taken in the afternoon as Dad usually worked on Saturday mornings. Edit - It could be a mis identified Liverpool to Newcastle. I think Dad usually identified his trains from the passenger tt, so a late running train could be given wrong identification. 2 more here with N headcodes. 13. Many thanks Tony, I just took the caption from Dad's notes without checking it. David.
  14. I never like using old colour slides as colour references, but I think these two suggest that there could be a difference in shade between Pullman Cars in a train. They were both taken by Dad. Both were taken on Agfa film (CT18 for those old enough to remember). To my eye there is a slight difference in shade between the old Pullman Cars and the Mark1 based cars in the same image. 19. Thanks very much for the kind comment John. I hadn't realised I'd made that many posts - I have to admit I don't often look at the information at the side of my own posts , nor at my profile. I usually seem to be in a hurry when I post things in the early evening. David
  20. I think you are probably right about the wagons. Sadly I didn't take a photo of the track machine on the left - at the time it didn't seem important - now I wish I had. Someone might recognise it, if we are lucky. David
