  1. For their one or two locations, what about the drivers who would need to remember the several dozen of locations they might pass through?
  2. Do modern cars use less fuel though? While I will concede the exhaust emissions are better (depending how you measure them) I think modern cars use more fuel than similar cars did 20 years ago. Highlighted similar before all the pedants start comparing apples with pears.
  3. Which is actually on top of the former down relief line.
  4. It would be easy enough to get hold of them, he will no doubt be in his 'safe space' away from all those nasty bullies who didnt agree with him!
  5. Thats something they havent thought about isnt it, expect changes to the rule book soon so the rules are complaint with the new trains!
  6. The refurbished 37s got bogies with different gearing (CP7), a pair of these were put under 50149, the standard 37s were the same as the standard 50s, and to all intents and purposes the 55s as well, some 37s received cast bogies from withdrawn Deltics complete with traction motors etc, one of the preserved 37s was found to have bogies and traction motors marked up as 55006 (or something like that) so they are all interchangeable. As for the gearing, some standard 37s were fitted with CP7 bogies which gave us the 'proper 37/3 subclass which isnt to be confused with 37300 to 37308 which were standard 37s until they were renumbered or converted to free up the 373xx number range for the conversions. A lot of locos are speed 'restricted' by doing nothing more than changing the details on the data panel and in the cab, 26s, 27s, 31s, 50s all had 'sticker' engineering during their lives, normally when allocated to infrastructure duties. Added to stop the pedants pointing it out- When built the 55s were fitted with fabricated bogies which were found to crack under the strain of continuous high speed running, these were replaced with cast bogies diverted from the 37 production line and the replaced bogies put under 37s, when the 55s were withdrawn any sold into preservation had the cast bogies replaced with fabricated ones and the cast ones placed under 37s. There are other things which I am sure our more pedantic posters will take great pride in pointing out I have missed out but I feel this post is long enough, much more info about bogies is available if you want to be bored senseless by it but enough is enough for now.
  7. As the 37s have the same traction motors and gearing as the 50s no modifications would have been required.
  8. If he took the time to email everyone then he wouldnt have any time to sort the orders out would he, RT Models is a (not so) small sideline which he is doing when not at work and obviously the day job comes first. Typing in bold is just plain rude.
  9. I havent got that sort of money either, and even if I had I wouldnt be spending it on a car for Sonny Boy, my car cost £2k just over 4 years ago and the other halfs cost £4k 18 months ago, WHEN he has a full driving licence AND earned the right to a car it will be up to £1500 and no more.
  10. The 7 coach half sets were always in the same formation when in service, the formation didnt change as they were effectively fixed formations.
  11. Yet I have a 17 year old upstairs who expects me to buy him car for when he passes his test (not after he passes his test) and has informed me his girlfriends father has bought her a £5000 car, my reply of 'what are you going to do to earn the money for it' fell on deaf ears and I would put good money on his poxy Mother will buy him a car, she always gives the kids everything they want which is really going to stand them in good stead for the future, not!
  12. In my case it would be beneficial to the environment and my wallet for me to continue using my old one.
  13. Shouldnt need it then. These 'clean ups' can prevent problems occuring by removing deposits before they are detected by the sensors, and can be used after the money light has come on to try and clear the problem before a garage use the scattergun approach to changing components.
  14. Its fine if done at a suitable time of day, I take the other halfs Fiesta for a 'full throttle decoke' every month or so as it just used for the school run and the odd local trip so a good blow out and warm up does it the world of good.
  15. Modern cars with all the emission gubbins and sensors for everything WILL need it if they are only used around town because the engine never gets (properly) warmed up or used at high enough revs to clear things out. Cars used on a mix of town work and longer distance trips DONT need it IF the engine is given a suitable blow out every once in a while (put it in 3rd gear and floor the throttle until 4500 or 5000 rpm (subject to speed limits and conditions obviously), let your foot off and do it again for several times to get the gasses flowing and a decent bit of heat into the components, if the engine is just pootling along at very low revs (even at motorway speeds) then it is LIKELY to need it because nothing gets hot enough to burn off the built up deposits. If the car is only really used on long distance runs it WONT need it at all. Its a question of use and driving style.
  16. For the inside clearance you want to use the vehicle with the longest wheelbase, for the outside you want to use the vehicle with the longest overhang.
  17. I agree, I have ordered a GT3 but am holding back on ordering a Fell 'just in case'. And quite a few didnt, also remember quite a few who got their money back only did so because of a good will gesture rather than the law.
  18. So a local rentagob on the telly. The press dont exactly help, when we had planned engineering work closing the mainline at Whiteball tunnel they were mentioning the reduced service was because of the strikes forgetting to mention they were on SWR and the route affected wasnt anywhere near SWR land.
  19. Since when have the RMT been the primary Drivers Union and could you post some evidence to back up your rabble rousing statement please, or failing that do we simply assume its just another of your anti Union posts!
  20. He is right because that is a carry over from BR when you passed out as a driver and got put on the local/ commuter runs to build your experience up (now Northern), after a while and when a place become available you would move up a link (TPE etc), then later on you would put in for the long distance links (now LNER, WC etc), back then it was called link progression but nowadays its called poaching. Even if Northern paid the same as, or more than, the Long Distance TOCs what work would you rather do,100 local stops or a London Flyer with 10 stops for the round trip?
  21. It isnt a question of the number of applicants but the number of SUITABLE applicants, and by suitable I mean suitable for training and not whether they would make good train drivers because its all about the speed they can be trained these days.
  22. Its always a good idea to p-ss off your existing workforce when the job relies on goodwill and them working overtime and rest days to keep the job going isnt it!
  23. Which several bus companies tried until it was pointed out it was illegal to charge somebody for 'free' training.
  24. It would have been much better to take the train out of service so it could be fixed wouldnt it, oh that means ALL the services that train worked that day would have been cancelled! I do agree its bloody disgusting but running the train in that condition is probably the least 'wrong' option!
