From Attila the Stockbroker's facebook page.

"RIP Gorby. In the GDR we thought you were the Messiah. You weren’t. You weren’t a very naughty boy either, just a good socialist who trusted your supposed ‘comrades’ too much."

  5. Gapping copperclad sleepers before painting them makes fault finding a lot easier.

  6. My new Antex XS25 is a lot hotter than my old one. Both still work, both same model. Is this a change to reflect lead-free working?

That could just be dirt/corrosion leading to reduced heat transference on the old element.

Was your original one made for 240v and the new one correctly rated for the now 230v mains?

    4. Dagworth

      Dagworth

Both say 230v 25w on the handle. Not that the mains voltage actually changed in most places, a quick check with the multimeter here says mine is 241 volts

  7. In lower quadrant signal areas do banner repeaters go the opposite way?

    1. St. Simon

      St. Simon

You could get  both upper quadrant and lower quadrant mechanical banners, to match the signal they repeat.

If you have an colour light banner, then they are always upper quadrant (as far as I know!)

  10. Perfect day for laying track, never going to have to worry about it buckling in hot weather!

    1. The Stationmaster

      The Stationmaster

Just that you'll end up with some rather big gaps fduring the cold season (if we ever get one again)

  11. Filing insulation gaps in copperclad sleepers on a 4ft long piece of three track pointwork is tedious

    1. Rowsley17D

      Rowsley17D

I gap mine with a half-round file beforehand if possible as it leaves no gaps as such to fill.

    3. Dagworth

      Dagworth

I use a small round file, and then go over all the sleepers with fine wet and dry so there are no sharp edges to the gaps and once painted they can’t be seen

Any photos of the layout? (Ipswich born and bred so interesting subject matter for me)

    2. Dagworth

      Dagworth

The photos disappeared in the recent problems on the site and I haven’t got round to re-uploading them yet. The station area boards all exist with track complete in p2,3&4 and the carriage/loco sidings, the London end helix is also finished. I’m working on the first board north of the Ancaster Road bridge at the moment. Currently 24 feet of what will be scenic boards are built, still a lot to go though.

I was a second man at Ipswich in 1985 and that is when the layout is set. All the loco changes etc.

Not sure - but I think I might have met him a few hours ago, when I had to print out some web pages.

Firefox had changed all the printer settings - so everything printed out in miniature.

Took ages of hunting through "help" files - and looking online - to work out how to fix it.

Ever wondered why there are lots of "search engines" - and rather less "find engines"?

(Pedantry isn’t funny, apparently, although to be pedantic, not everyone agrees with that.)

  16. Peco code 83 track (SL-8300) doesn't actually say Peco anywhere on the sleeper moulding

    1. truffy

      truffy

      That's because sleepers are incognito.

Did you see the 1991 TV miniseries? Marvellous stuff!

    2. Tim V

      Tim V

That is because it's spelt PECO!

  17. On busy trains I take great pleasure in asking people to move their bags to make seats available for sitting.

I’ll admit that often I do have my bags on the seat next to me, although that’s normally because the train is quiet enough to allow that. Any time I’m asked to move my bags, or if the train gets busier, then I will do so, although one time in July 2020 going from Carlisle to Glasgow a request to move my bags came rather rudely.

Similarly turfing people out of reserved seats....

I used to do the same on buses, but then I was the driver and if they didn't do as I said the bus went nowhere!

  18. Anyone ever modelled slab track?

  19. Code 75 FB looks far too small next to bullhead track... might have to see if my local shop can get me some Peco code 83

  20. Frustrated that my order from ****** ****** hasn't arrived yet.

That’s when mine arrive in general

  21. Why won't my Youtube link show the thumbnail, just a play button grrrr. Hope it will come up properly in due course.

  22. Really wish my order from *&* would arrive...

And this morning it did, now to try to get my head round Templot!

  23. Signals with 14 route options...

    1. The Stationmaster

      The Stationmaster

Is that a record?  Technically feasible I would think although the route indicator principles keep changing!

    2. Dagworth

      Dagworth

It only has JI4,5 & 6 and two stencils for the sub, but the stencils apply to two routes each, one of the JIs can apply to two different paths across the points.

    3. St. Simon

      St. Simon

14? Is that it? CF2324 at Cardiff Central technically has 48 routes from it, although there are only 7 destinations.
