  3. is considering plan C for his 77xxx - a 43xx boiler grafted to his Dapol bodied Comet chassis 76079 - The Bachmann 76079 bought at the weekend might be too good to chop!

#2  basically I'm getting all the bits together for all 3 options and then deciding which will be the best .....

  4. A quick snap before he gets taken apart tomorrow for the start of spraying Grey primer first, then satin black, over which the green will go on after masking
  5. I'm not. Summat is 1958, that means wrap round windows.
  6. There's no general rule really, but to back up your theory I was watching a Bachmann BR Standard Class 4 mogul on eBay that went for about £55 on Saturday night - I bought one on Saturday from a trader at the Boston Show for £45, and that one was already chipped Some show traders though seem happy to sticker second hand stock up at top dollar prices and take them home with them - different business model I guess, if they do sell at the price they ask it makes up for all the shows it didn't sell, maybe ......
  7. Just like Mansfield then Mike .......
  8. Was honored/embarrassed to be presented with the Best in Show trophy at the Boston Show yesterday :)

It's a brand new trophy. The club only got it last Thursday.

It was a well deserved win.

  9. This weekend gone was Summat Colliery's first time out since the Member's Day in July and what a great weekend it was. The show was held in Stickney Village Hall in Lincolnshire and just at the edge of my limit for a show without accommodation, so it was an early start and quite a few miles under my belt in the Scooby (not all bad then ) Summat performed brilliantly as usual, most problems were caused by operator error (me) in the main. Can't thank my two helpers over the weekend enough - Aaron and Dave from the Boston MRS who took to the Powercab and Summat's complicated shunting sequence like ducks to water. Even Wendy left the kitchen on Sunday afternoon and took the controls for a spell. Couldn't resist this shot, I wondered why the tender on the 8F had tipped over, and this is what greeted me on investigation As I said, operator error mostly I bagged a bargain loco from one of the traders too - a Standard Class 4 mogul 76079 for £45, that turned out to be already chipped when I opened it up on Sunday morning to add a Lenz Standard It was immediatly pressed into service all day Sunday - Don't tell it it's likely to come under the knife when the GWR 43xx body arrives ....... Oh, and I was acutely embarrassed on Sunday afternoon when presented with this :) :)
  10. all packed and ready for the Boston Show tomorrow http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/43492-boston-model-railway-society-exhibitions/page__view__findpost__p__470577 hope to see a few RMwebbers for a chat, saves me from actually playing trains!

  11. 71000 is getting ready for his before primer photo shoot I've drilled out the chimney and finally sorted the air bubble holes with some gel type cyano (Screwfix Mitre bond - who says doing the kitchen can't help with the modelling ) and I've bit the bullet and fashioned the cab partitions behind the driver and fireman out of plasticard, also a representation of the fireman's seat. The driver as usual comes with a cast in seat So, just waiting for the buffers from Golden Arrow and I can get the primer on ........
  12. in my experience, yes. Maybe I should have qualifed what I said. We have had two high end DVD recorders, A Sony and a Phillips, both started playing up within a year. It starts with them being picky with the brand/type of DVDR disk, then not playing copies or pre-records, you choose, then not playing at all. End result, a few hundred quids worth of kit in the bin. That's why I reccommend seperates. Although if the OP is a Virgin subscriber, then go for the V+ HD box, you don't own the kit, so if it goes wrong they should send you a new one
  13. I wouldn't bother, get a hard disk recorder with freeview built in, pause live TV etc DVD drives pack up really fast in a domestic environment. Then get a cheap DVD player, you can get them for about 20 quid,
  14. Following a brief interlude with my thoughts on a 77xxx I returned to the Duke yeterday whilst recovering from a nasty bout of Bejing Belly (don't ask) So deflectors are now modified to the single continuous handrail which involved unsoldering the small lower handrail and the handrail knob from the end of the top handrail. This was re-sited higher up in a new hole, two holes were filled with solder and then a new section of handrail soldered in with the join within the old knob. Pic below shows the old one on the left, new correct (ish) one on the right I've also fitted the PH Designs cam box covers, filing down the Golden Arrow resin to basically a rectangular lump and supergluing the etch over the top. Looked okay, but when I fitted the block back to the loco I need to remove more resin to get the top of the cover closer to the running plate. an issue possibly with over width Hornby cylinders? Anyway, simple enough to pop the cover off and file a flat on the top edge of the casting - I will return
  15. back at work today after a bad case of Bejing Belly yesterday

  16. has a very sore ankle but the utility flooring is done, just the tiling to do then it's on to the study!

You've got it really bad, haven't you? :-D

  22. OK, the decision seems to have been made. The Airfix kit and Bachmann tender appeared yesterday and last night I offered up various bits of kit to the chassis and boiler. There is a difference in mould quality, I had hoped that by using an original airfix kit the plastic might be crisper than the Dapol kit, oh well. A few issues to consider: The motor is wider than the outside dimensions of the firebox lower/ashpan The nice painted backhead does not fit the airfix footplate - and the airfix backhead includes part of the cab wall anyway I either need to cut the bottom of the smokebox off to set it into the footplate, or cut the footplate with a curved front to accept the smokebox as is. If I cut the smokebox the, frankly silly tubeplate detail behind the door will have to go. I've also printed out the Beattie drawings for the 3MT and 4MT to compare, and Beattie not withstanding there are some obvious differences between the two apart from the boilers The footplate narrows above the cylinders much more on the class 3 than the 4 - filing needed, bye bye rivet detail .... The sloped section of footplating at the front is further back on the 3MT - this will have to be ignored. The blower tunnel is shorter and the control valve is more to the front on the 3MT with consequentially different pipe runs The frame cutaway for the ashpan is deeper on the 4MT - not a problem as I will have to fabricate dummy sides to cover the motor etc once the Airfix bits are hacked off to get the footplate over the motor Next step is to get some photos of the RHS of a class 3, as I need to confirm pipe runs/injectors etc. The plan is to use the Airfix injector lump at the moment, shouldn't look too bad once painted black ....
  23. slip a scalpel or similar between the cast metal and the thin bunker sides, they are glued on with a small amount of what could be cyano, they pop off quite easily then the whole lot comes apart. The bunker section is seperate from the tanks/cab. Be careful though the plastic is paper thin once it's all in bits!
  24. love the comment about the village idiot
  25. having looked at Beattie's drawing at lunch I think the washouts might be a touch high too, probably to clear the tanks ... Then again, it is a Beattie drawing
