My "next" holiday (the first one I'm having in three years) starts on Friday.

  3. A very measured post Tim, I've "+"sed you Personally, I've stopped using a Sat-nav, I know they are useful to some, but I just found it to be a distraction, a pain to have to keep unplugging etc to stop oiks nicking it and it just sent me the oddest ways sometimes. Problem was, the time it got used most was going on holiday with the caravan - everyone who knows about this thankless task is that roads with white lines down the middle are a priority, so when the sat-nav takes you down some farm track in the middle of nowhere things can get rather heated When my car and laptop got nicked (long story) I got the insurance payout for the Navman, but never bothered to replace it. These days I only thankfully make planned journeys, so google maps and Streetview are used to "fly" the last mile to the destination. I then make a directions sheet with a big black marker and an A4 sheet of paper as a reminder. The RAC Traffic info map thingy on my Android phone is also handy
  4. That's what I thought, but champion?

  11. The Lenz Standard+ Stay Alive WORKS!, really well!. Kitbuilt A5 chassis, two wheel pickup with one side nasty plain mazak drivers crawls over a settrack point on speed step 1. Chuffed? you bet :)

  12. Well, work on the Duke will be suspended as I've run out of bits! The ex-JE etched deflectors will be posted out next week, so I'm told. Chris at Golden Arrow is chasing his supplier for the missing buffers - he already has the cylinder drains. So I thought a few pics of the current state of play might be a good idea. I still havn't sorted out the cab details yet, although I have found a pair of Hornby crew that will do fine. Big question is how to fabricate the panel/window behind the driver's seat.....
  13. Kids break up foe the summer today, that's six whole weeks of not having to get up early to make their packed lunch :)

    1. Grafarman

      Grafarman

amazing isn't it; Sulley's hair looks so real in HD...

  17. sorted out a kitbuilt A5 tank last night - the Bach 3 function could not cope with the small Mashima - a Lenz Standard later and all was well :)

  18. And here's the RHS firebox pipework. Note the extra bits in copper where I've enhanced the kit whitemetal and where the castings were too short or had missing bits. The lower casting proved too narrow to fit around the extended firebox/ashpan and was cut and approx 5mm of extra piping soldered into the two pipes leading from the injector that head rearwards. You can still see the join just to the rear of the pip that runs up to the steam manifold. Handrails next and them I will turn my attention to the cab.
  19. Went to the NRM on Saturday, nine quid to park and only half the place open, was it worth the petrol?

To be honest, 9 quid is not bad, but having to leave an hour early 'cos we'd done it all left me a bit short changed ....

    3. Mickey

      Mickey

went on Sunday for first time in 20 odd years.....has it shrunk or have I grown?

Our Lass liked to see KING George V cos her grandad was a driver at Gloucester :)

Its £2.50 all day in the Network Rail car park next to the NRM/Station. Lots of spaces up the ramp above the coal drops. Have to walk up the hill to the current entrance though while Station Hall is rebuilt.

  20. Handsome chap that operator on Combwich I recall that he was feeling as green as his T shirt that morning .......
  21. I know it's me just being picky, but the cast pipework provided in the kit for the LHS of the firebox just was not good enough for me. So I took a mold off the Comet Exhaust Ejector valve from my 2-8-0 build and cast one in resin. Pipework completed from a good photo of a late fifties DoG with remnants of an old Comet detailing pack and some stripped bell wire gave this: The RHS is not so troublesome, although I'll end up enhancing that too with more bits of wire no doubt
  22. ah, but they are such a useful source of Triang buffers at a reasonable 50p each
  23. R Madeley and the awful Fiona Phillips for the next two weeks on R2
