  1. You clearly never drove one of those Rommel racers as they were nicknamed, due to being an abandoned export contract to Libya, straight 6 petrol engined, about 5 miles to the gallon and a turning circle close to the diameter of the earth resulting in more walls knocked down and vehicles scraped. Absolutely wonderful around town and so easy to park.. They would however, in relative serenity, do 60 MPH on the open road, until the fuel ran out, which was fast for those days. Even a Sherpa with the idiotic detachable box, which was never detached, in the background of the photo. Pure class. Sorry for more thread drift back to the good old fun filled days when the joys were legion and the clouds rare.
  2. Some GPO poles were licensed for power lines to be attached, much rarer than GPO on power poles, as you point out, which was a routine occurrence, it was mainly in rural areas and seemed to vary significantly between different areas. This continued into the BT era but has been almost completely phased out now as it causes difficulties both from a safety aspect and difficulties when a pole requires renewal for deterioration or damage. The way the poles are protected from rot varies and so does the method of testing the structure to ensure that it is safe to climb, and method of climbing, hence the much increased used of elevating platforms to perform work on the poles and whatever cabling is attached. GPO/BT also provided some very limited number of links to isolated railway areas but the circuits normally originated and terminated on railway cables and I suspect the practice has all but ceased by now, the difficulty of agreeing which part of the circuit was faulty could, and did, cause delay in rectifying the fault.
  3. Great photos, you have captured the cold winter weather extremely well, especially the first photo which I really like you feel cold just looking at it.

  7. But the boxes are in good condition, which seems to be the standard test.
  8. Can only agree, a great and interesting edition it doe set an even higher bar from an already high level.
  9. Listed as The Yorkshire Coast Dalesman, IZ07/IZ08 with 47746+47854 (T&T) run by WCRC, promoted by Compass West Coast. Which would make Davexoc correct.
  10. The layout really is getting the look now, your attention to detail is making the difference and I'm looking forward seeing it when the OHLE is installed. Keep up the good work.
  11. Still goes on, when I was on site the discussion with the contractors about an excavation would often be about the ability to obtain a sufficient excavation for a piece of plant so would be we need a clear 1200mm by 600mm, how deep? 18 inches should be OK would be the reply.
  12. Tom, have you seen Blueball summit as it is very similar to what you are looking for, certainly the scenery is very well done or for a more industrial scene Mini MSW giving a different perspective to a continuous run?
  13. If you go onto shop1 - Track on the Association web site you can read the instructions for the construction of these turnouts which answer some/most of your questions.
  14. It's a great layout and well thought out and executed, looking forward to the photos. Welcome back.
  15. I don't know the area and I have only seen the videos but it did appear that there was much straighter pull from the other line as the carriage was resting on the side of the tunnel that the loco was pulling against, effectively pivoting the coach, whereas from the other line it was more likely to not damage the wall.
  16. From the Rocks by Rail website, via a Google search:- LOCATION We are easy to find. There is a google map link but it didn't load correctly, just click on the visit us dropdown not on the individual topics and it came up., this does give location and Postcode. HTH
  17. Sartorially it used to be, but proving I'm smart I stopped it and I like to think for once I'm right. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
  18. My view exactly, wearing a suit every working day for the last 35 years prior to retirement I made the remark that I won't be wearing one again and I haven't. Couldn't wait for the day it happened.
  19. What a great looking 20, it will blend in very well, another excellent upgrade. Loving it.
  20. I always thought it looked a bit sad sitting there, isolated.
  21. Looking at the photos on the retail sites the Bachmann V2 has spoked wheels in all the examples that I have looked at, perhaps ominous?
  22. York is my choice, when first at work I had to go to monthly meetings that were held in the Royal Station hotel, now the Principal, and I always managed a good look around the station or the railway museum, often managing a Deltic Doncaster - York or return. Still a fabulous station though as is normal the track layout has been "simplified" it still retains the grandeur and solidity of such a building.
