      Blackberry (RIM) uses push technology - when the message appears on their server, it is 'pushed' to your device. Your email will probably use either POP or IMAP which need to check the server every so often for new messages; this usually defaults to 5 mins, 10 mins, or an hour. You can change this, but it will cause you more network traffic.
