In the workshop today is an EM Gauge scratchbuilt (by Mike Edge) model of the last LMS built Black 5 44767 - fitted with Stephenson link motion. An absolute peach of a locomotive!
It has been weathered to represent an engine cleaned at a shed.
three quarters front with the sun catching the dirt on the top of the boiler
I bought a second hand Hornby 8f quite a while ago. Before I went on my holidays I had repainted the can sides and renumbered it as a BR engine. I have started to weather it so..
and a bit of a close up
Big problem is that there is oil leaching through the various "holes" in the bodywork... so more weathering will be taking place...
Been a long time since I added anything to the blog on weathering so here is a recent commission - A blue Western Region Class 47 - Amazon.
The Heljan 47 is big and very heavy. Weathering something this size needs good reference colour photos - and I have a number of these but not of this loco.
First up Three Quarter side on view...
As usual - top down - water and black ink, then bottom up brown ink and water mix as a base coat followed by powders once the ink is dry to the touch.
Side on view
interestingly enough the other side came out slightly differently... the photo editor seems to have decided to lighten the colours on this shot
The worst part of the process was the roof - Heljan have given nice clean grey panels which took a bit to weather down - there is added texture on these and around exhausts etc using weathering powder added to wet ink
Finally found the GSWR Baltic Tank - its rough and ready but does give you an idea of how well proportioned these locos were. Built by my father in plasticard on a Triang chassis
I am part way through weathering some of my own tank wagons - an Airfix Class B and a Mainline 14t Class B
Here they are together before weathering:
unlike Mike Delamar I haven't changed the walkways or ladders on the Airfix kit and I forgot to paint over the restraining bars on the Mainline vehicle - I will come back to that in a later blog.
So a general wash of ink and water followed by powder - then running wet ink down from the filler and adding dry powder to this results in:
Class B Tank ( note how the old AIrfix decals show up on the side of the tank)
and
- notice the shiny metalwork - will go back now and sort that out...
I have recently been busy with Murgatroyd tankers - but have had the opportunity to weather an EM Gauge Duchess. This is in one of the two types of BR Lined Maroon - and, as it happens, the owner is not over keen on that livery so..
a clean loco
and, after and application of inks and powders
and for some close ups...
running gear (powder applied while ink is wet)
and some dirt build up around the lower edges of the firebox/footplate "joint"
and some bits of the tender - water filler area first
and a side on of the tender itself - not the build up of dirt along the tender top and also at the joint between the underframe and the tender body..
I have never done "before and after shots of locos I have weathered - but I am impressed by Davey4270's shots of the O gauge Wagons I have weathered for him.
So having received a number of locos from Mike Edge to weather here are some before shots - I will add the weathered versions over the coming days. First up a Jubilee by Mike - all I can say is what a beauty!
and now a weathered one..
next a Duchess - Princess Alice complete with Scottish Region nameplate..
and City of Hereford
and a dirty version
and finally a red one ( my favourite Duchess colour)..Duchess of Gloucester
and some North Eastern region interlopers..Sayajirao
and a shot of the same loco dirty
and finally Saint Johnstoun
and now dirty

Off to do some weathering... two more duchesses still to weather..
Lots of visitors to the demo stand at Warley where quite a few RMwebbers (and others) had a go.
Had a varied assortment of commissions to do over the last week or two (and 6 more Conflat As still to weather).
First up a Lima "Compressor Van"
This has been fitted with Comet LMS bogies and is in EM. Its a vehicle Lima must have seen on Paul Bartletts brilliant Photo records.
some coke hoppers - all £H Kit built and very fragile - 8 shown on this shot, 12 in total
These are the same as the ones Hornby have just announced. All are in Em and have had the chassis strengthened with araldite (before they arrived with me) to try and keep them in one piece. Several have been modified to get them square but they are very light.
and a breakdown train - no room to get a shot of everything in one go but..
Hornby Dublo model modfied to run on EM track and reworked to remove the operating handles and string (chain used to replace the string) by Mike Edge
and
A Hornby man riding coach (regauged and new couplings fitted by Mike Edge) and a Ratio ex LNWR coach built and modified by me - again in EM
I have lost the shots of the water tanker and van to go with these - will try and add them later
As some of you may have observed I have steam locos (and stock ) from the ex LMS, Ex BR Standards, and ex LNER..
This is due to the fact that my late father and I had slightly different views of the railway world (strangely enough he was very biased towards the LMS despite living in the North East. Despite this he did build a lot of ex LNER engines for me to paint and line...
as in
an ABS L1 - it weighs a ton, uses Romford wheels and a D13 motor and gearbox - and seems to have more grunt than the Hornby offering.
Nest up - one from me a Little Engines A7 - and I will be the first to admit it doesn't really like corners...
It also has a D13 and Romford wheels.
and two further ex NER tanks engines
first up a Nucast G5. Romford wheels, MW005 motor and it weighs a ton without any ballast. Strange that they are building a 12" to the foot one of these...
and finally for now - one of Newcastle's J72s - in lined Apple Green complete with NER crests...
a Ks kit, with Ks wheels and a Ks motor - and it does work.....
At one time Leeds MRS set off to build a model of Hartford Junction on the WCML (for various reasons it was never finished) . As part of this I started to gather together some AC Electrics - all painted Electric Blue.
First up a Hornby bodyshelled AL1 (or 81)
New pantograph, modified bogies and added numbers/crests
and a Hornby AL6 (class 86)
repainted , new pantograph, modified bogies and Jackson Evans crests and numerals.
I also have a AL5 (Bachmann) but no layout to run it on.
I am busy photographing all of my stock for insurance purposes. This blog will make use of these photos - together with some notes on construction and I hope people can get involved with it.
First up ex Great Central Locomotives - the scratch/kit built ones are my late fathers' work. I have posted the odd picture of some of these in the recent past with some interest. So lets begin with a Tank Locomotive - a Q1 O-8-0T.
This was scratchbuilt in Brass , suing Millhome castings, Ks wheels and a Triang X04 motor. Surprisingly this loco works very well and I must go back a weather the motion.
Next up a ex GC L1 2-6-4T - a Zeppelin!
This is in brass - uses Romford drivers a D13 motor connected to an Anchorage gear box
and finally for tonight an N5.
this is barss with Millhome fittings, an X04 type motor and Romford wheels
