      Try making something small, that is often enough or build a micro layout, maybe a shunting puzzle with no scenery so you can have something that works quickly.

      For a number of years, I worked in a university, as an instrumentation technician.

       

      A major part of this job was fitting, wiring and setting up strain gauges. (I enjoyed the wiring bit ...) It was accepted practice to keep superglue in a fridge - as the bond strength was a critical aspect of gauging.

       

      As for "IPA", I was led to believe this was short for "Iso Propyl Alcohol" - which definitely wasn't kept in the fridge - and I doubt if anybody would have been stupid enough to want to drink the stuff.

       

      Of course, I could be talking about the wrong sort of IPA ... .

      You could try the www.stationcolours site. It will at least give you the info for the LNER and GNR, though what livery particular buildings were in the 1940s may be hard to establish.
