Living in South Essex if I want to go anywhere other than East Anglia there are not many alternatives to the M25, certainly not when it comes to going South or West. North or Northwest I use the A130 to Chelmsford, then the A414 via Hatfield Broad Oak to the M11 at Bishops Stortford/Stanstead. Before Covid I went to a model railway exhibition at Bishops Stortford using the above route. I met someone from South Essex there who had come via the M25. It actually took him about the same time as me and I would have been quicker but for roadworks in Bishops Stortford. For routes further north it was M11-A14-A1 or M11-A14 to the M1-M6 junction. Depending on the time of day/week I sometimes used the A5 to avoid the M6.
