  1. 47's on the Highland line maybe and 47's on the North Welsh coast too I think, though the memory may not be so good. I can't think of any books. Maybe get a Jouef mk3 and change the roof of the Lima/Hornby mk3 to suit. There are some roe/vac vents from shapeways or the cheap alternative from Southern Pride but these are too narrow.
  2. I just prefer to control the pressure, paint flow and thinning myself. Some jobs need this. Don't get me wrong; the Halfords white primer is a good quality paint but aerosols are wasteful and expensive and using them as well as an airbrush is like having a dog and barking yourself. You're right about mixing the paint. The matting agent really needs scraping off the bottom of the tin and the whole tin thoroughly mixing to the same consistency. I've even found that after a long period without use, the matting agent has once more stuck to the bottom of the tin. Maybe the main problems people are having are down to the fact that the old tins didn't need this level of extreme mixing. At the end of the day the paint is just nowhere near as good as the old stuff but decent results can still be acheived with the new paint. I'd say don't throw it in the bin.
  3. Does anyone know if this SELECT decoder has the original Bachmann SWD 47 files or the newer V4 SWD U-drive sound file?
  4. I thought the pilot loco was always in front too. It was interesting to read that an ageing Midland 2P 4-4-0 was used on the S&C for pilot duties until the 60's but the drivers of the Scots and Jubilee's on the Scottish expresses preferred to go it alone and not seek it's "assistance" as it would be pushed all the way to Blea Moor. Here's D6152 at the stops.
  5. Or seal the speaker. Doesn't the 47 come with a plastic sound chamber? Maybe just seal the holes with canopy glue or black/blue tack.
  6. Some people aren't as good at spelling and punctuation as others either or are from different backgrounds and their work does not require them to be great at English. Sometimes on here it seems to be a battle of who's had the best education and "I'm more intelligent than you". I've had people pick me up on my spelling rather than offer me any help with my question but at the end of the day it's a model railway forum. Should a truck driver expect everyone who uses the road to be able to blind side reverse a 40ft trailer?
  7. Brian's work starts here (not sure if there was a separate thread): http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/81887-Hornby-mk2e-coaches/page-6 I fancied following this route too but it's still quite an expensive base model for that kind of project. The window frames and glazing on the Hornby model are impressive though and I hope Brian's latest rtr acquisitions don't put him off his excellent work I'm still looking for a masochist that's lengthened a mk3 shorty so's I don't end up doing it.
  8. I'm guessing from the top: Airfix Hornby Bachmann Lima. The most recessed windows are on the Bachmann coach? To be fair though, you have flushglazed the Airfix and Lima coaches. Weirdly I prefer the look of the Lima one out of that lot for its windows and shape. The Bachmann coach seems to have a too pointy cornered roof at the ends where it should be more domed; quite noticeable on the DBSO.
  9. Their service is first class and they are really nice people.
  10. I've seen 1970's colour photo's that seem to suggest a dark grey roof like Lima did with their original 87005 but I would have thought they were all off-white originally like the other electrics and the dark grey rooves may well be just muck; anyone else know?
  11. There seems to be variations to roof detail across the class in the BR blue era too; for example some had a huge insulator in the middle of the roof like an AL5 but not an 85. I've also noted a cylindrical component up there on some but not others.
  12. I want that sign on a t-shirt but with the words "Caution Railway Modeller"
  13. Buster with Phil Collins. Didn't they go to the trouble of converting D306 from disc to split headcode for authenticity? I can't remember if they managed twin tracks for the scene though as it's been ages since I've seen it. There was an episode of Endeavor.....can't remember which one....a body thrown from a train. The scene featured multiple tracks, a Class 04 shunter shunting in the background (with dubious overdub of sound) and a long rake of maroon mk1's passing the scene of crime.

    Alright?

"Y'alright Love?" is an old working class greeting in Leeds; often between too men which seems strange to me living ten miles away in Wakey where we avoid any kind of pleasantries at all.
  15. I liked Syd Barrett and Dark side of the moon was quite good. After that I thought they were a bit boring. Wish you were here is a good song.
  16. The orange stripe came in early 1979 I think; not sure if any were without at the end of 1980.
  17. People get into a tither because they think that a life is at stake in the ambulance and they really want to help. It is not pleasant if you're sat at a red light with an ambulance wailing and flashing behind you when you could just pull through the red and let it through. Waiting for the green light is the law still. A mate of mine heard the sirens of a fire engine, couldn't see it but pulled across the entrance of a small park to let it past so he thought, only for the fire engine to administer a t-bone to his Chevette. The fire engine was coming out of the park!
  18. Ah, I didn't get that at first. Maybe VAG introduced those strafing indicators to encourage owners to use them or was it for star bellied sneechness.
  19. On the western section of the M62, there can't be many cars that are not Audi.
  20. There's also the old assumption that the manager would be in the office and the assistant working the shop.
  21. True enough, but no matter how many you buy, when the time comes to do the job, all of them will be AWOL.
  22. You could try a Bachmann Class 85 panto. I got one as a spare from Bachmann; it was £17 posted but it does not have the cross on the top arms and it didn't come with the base and insulators so I thought it was a bit of a rip. You could maybe modify the HJ base. Judith Edge don't do a Faively pan yet but have one planned.
  23. Didn't a "hands free" mobile telephone kit for vehicles get invented some time ago?
  24. There are some people like me who like to build the old MTK or Q kits modern image loco kits because they are challenging, fun and have a bad reputation and also because they can be had for a very cheap price at toy fairs. I wish I could find a class 83 or 84 MTK kit.
  25. Taking retro a step further; pasting your band into old footage. Really clever, and very nice too
