  1. Northern are planning upon getting rid of the guards and going to OMO. Irish rail did that 10 or more years ago. Northern guards get a certain percentage of each ticket fare as comission, can't see them wanting to loose out.
  2. I even think that UK outline modelers should also watch these.
  3. How many people are watching the monthly feeds on YouTube with Ken Patterson and Model Railroad Hobbyist? https://www.youtube.com/user/MRhobbyist There are many interesting topics covered.
  4. A while back I sold off some of the older locomotives on eBay and thought that the combination of the various fees such as listing final sale and card fees through PayPal were way too high. Having seen that there seems to be fewer items getting close to what people want to sell for I'd say should we be looking at other locations to sell our surplus stock? I see that there are various available options Auction sites Fixed listing sites Take stock to a shop to trade in Thoughts?
  5. Other than the above brief mention on Grace's Guide this is the first time I had heard about this company. I too would agree with Jamie as I'd have thought most of the rolling stock would probably have been built by the Leeds Forge. Many years ago had a meal in one built by the forge on a turn table in an Indian museum! http://www.leedsengine.info/leeds/histlfo.asp
  6. Great programme liked the drones shot of the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
  7. The other year I did Shimla to Amritsar and looking forward to seeing Michael Portillo views
  8. Of British built locomotives exported and now in the UK there are a few narrow gauge supplied to the sugar industry many are part of the sStatfold Barn railway. Plus a few exported to India including the DHR B class (Sharp Stewart) now at Beeches and occasional visitor to Ffestiniog
  9. Date for 2019 is 9/3/2019 as per the information at this year's event. Had a good look around this morning before spending time this afternoon working at the Middleton Railway.
  10. Had a daft thought the other day. Would it be feasible to use say an A4 ring binder to make a micro layout on/in? Conceptually you could store the layout on the bookcase taking up next to no space. Would you use the full A3 area as a base board that can be folded away or A4 plus the same for the back scene? O gauge would need the full A3 but it will be a diorama with a locomotive and waggon. On30/OO would be a small shunting layout. Not/OO9 probably get in a full loop. Pop-up buildings? If kids book feature pop-up graphics it might look good for a micro layout?
  11. Just a week away. Not involved with the event just interested and feel that they need a plug as a local hospice benefits from all who attend.
  12. Had an interesting situation some years ago, I called into the RS shop in Leeds for a replacement power supply for the desktop computer. RS said that they didn't have one in stock and advice was to go to Maplin a short distance away. Hey presto one computer back up and running. Might be like Jessops with just a few stores taken over by a new owner.
  13. The midland railway and great central both bought some 2-6-0 locomotives from Baldwin, I have a sneaky feeling that they supplied some to a third railway. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midland_Railway_2511_Class
  14. Whilst everyone else is hoarding bread and milk due to the snow I'll be stocking up on LEDs and other useful components.
  15. Prior to the Brighton Belle electic units there was a locomotive hauled Pullman service. Slightly off topic, I don't seem to have seen modellers doing the electric units that had a single Pullman car in the set.
  16. I wonder if the O gauge locomotives should be done like Minerva in cooperation with say Ixion.
  17. There were photos on Facebook within minutes of the split. I know of friends on the station who posted pictures and jokey comments about perhaps they need some 3 link couplings. It just serves to confirm how many different couplings there are fitted to prototype stock, nearly as bad as the discussion we have about couplings!
  18. If we look at the analogy of laptops and mobile phones given a period of time the batteries will be far less efficient as they get older. Can you imagine that the main dealer advice would be the same as I give in IT where you need to fully discharge and recharge a couple of times to get the battery life back. With all electric vehicle I think many have missed a simple idea. When parked up the roof should have solar panels to aid the charging. Just take a look at boats in marinas and they often also have a windmill generating more power. It would be easy to design and add a windmill for all cars. On one site someone used to plug in the car from a adjacent office whilst they were working. A rubber cable tidy was placed on the pavement. Autonomous vehicles will be a good idea except if I go out drinking and get one of these home rather than a taxi or bus home I'm surely incharge of the vehicle? If this is the scenario I should be charged for being over the drink drive limit. This will also put out of business many of the taxi and minicabs.
  19. This should pave the way for the DB trains to Köln which have been promised for what seems like an eternity. Köln will be more useful than Amsterdam for onward travel.
  20. Many foreign stations main line and under ground have metal detectors etc but I think they are designed to check for explosive devices.
  21. There are various other detail differences such as the stepped running plate for the lower cab on a few of them. Domed and domeless boilers. Many of the survivors have new boilers. According to the catalogue it's supposed to be DCC ready 6 pin! For pictures of the prototypes see my Leeds Engine site, link below.
  22. The French have realised that the existing LGV (line a grand vitesse) have a minor flaw that to get a greater speed for service trains due to turbulence of passing trains they need to increase the separation between the parallel tracks. Other than the fairly compact seaboard cities in USA I think that the plethora of low cost airlines have got the longer distances sewn up. Having done NY, Chicago and thence to LA in September on Amtrak I think I'd do some of the long distances by plane in future. Similarly low cost airlines have killed off the likes of the night trains in Europe as many know you can get a train to the airport at each end and a swift flight. I'd rather travel by train but you have to be realistic when there are economically priced flights from say £10 on a certain Irish operator to many places in Europe. There was once an article in a national paper indicating that a guy in Liverpool was going to see his team in London and he caught 2 planes one to Netherlands and thence to London cheaper than the fare on the train! How can the train compete?
  23. The long compartment stock was some of the first to go and we only have some of the shorter compartment stock as survivors. See the comments in Parkin's book on MkI stock that echoes the comments about rust, sot and the dreaded Asbestos. Someone once suggested we got some MkI stock and the comments came back I wouldn't touch those rust buckets! Removal of the Asbestos insulation can be prohibitively expensive. I like the plethora of types yet you look at the later coach builds and you say get just FO, SO, DVT and a catering vehicle. MkI's are a nice modular design where you can decide which doors and windows you want thus making limitless options.
  24. There are some systems that when programming the address gives you the option to change the acceleration and deceleration values. I have often tweaked these rather than touching the speed tables as they can get rather cumbersome when programming multiple values on a handset rather than on a computer based interface. If your controller doesn't mention these specifically they are CV3 and 4 respectively. I find that I can tweak these on an ad hoc basis when programming on the main.If it shoots off like a greyhound (dog not the Southern loco) try a higher value similarly if it's a bit like a snail (not a flying one as per the CIE logo of old) reduce the value. Start at 15 for each and 0 means no momentum ie 0-100 instantly and 100-0! Some of mine have as low as 5 as the physical loco, gearing and motor can have a significant effect.
