  1. Check out my topic 'Lamps!' in Questions, Hints, and Tips for the saga of my lamp brackets.  I use staples cut to size and located in to drilled holes, after discarding a bent glued version, in conjunction with Modelu lamps that can be attached and detached; I have lately taken to using Springsides with holes drilled in them as more robust.  Staples trimmed to size and painted black or as appropriate look very good except from very close up, but use an etch if scale appearance is of more importance to you.  Modelu lamps are printed with slots in the bottom to take a lamp iron, the Springsides have holes drilled and   can have Milliput inserted to ensure they sit the right way around, though I have not found this necessary as they are a tight enough fit to stay in place.

I have found that Hornby's brackets, where they are provided in place of moulded ones, are a little flimsy for this system and have had to be be replaced with my standard staples (no.13); Bachmann's and Oxford's are fine.  Hornby's 20 ton GW toad with separate handrails and lamp irons do not feature separate irons for the side lamps; Oxford's 16 tonner 4 or 6 wheeler does.

A small problem with my system has arisen with a 56xx, which cannot be used for parcels or express goods because I cannot get a lamp on to the buffer beam central lamp iron because of the position of the smokebox; it is fine bunker first of course!

Thanks for your detailed reply, I am not worried about scale appearance its more the fact that they will be there so I will check out your topic. I cant seem to find any etches anywhere but I will keep looking.

  2. I had a very nice sheet of reasonably priced etched ones of various types including the side brackets. I can't remember who made them though. It wasn't Mainly Trains.

I thought it might be Roxey, but it seems not.

I'll have a look and try to find them.

  3. I would like to improve the appearance of some Hornby brake vans, given the fact that the lamp irons are 'moulded' items compared to Bachmann vans I wondered if there are any suitable lamp irons available to buy.

I have had a quick look online but have not found anything suitable.

Is it possible that these could be made using thin plasticard?

Any help with this would be much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

  4. As an update to this subject , I did get round to sending my fried chip away to ESU .

    Postage to Germany about £8.00

They emailed me back about a month later to consent to it being repaired for 35 Euros .

They then send you an email invoice that needs to be paid within 10 days .

You cannot however pay online in the usual manner , you need an international payment application .

I got my son to do it (never ask family ) had to fill out a long e form . and it cost an additional tenner .

Will do it through my local bank branch next time .

It came back in an 8" square box well packaged and it was a new decoder .

It also had updated SWD class 25 sounds !

So pretty pleased with the service .

Just don't expect express service !

Glad you got it sorted Albie

  5. Does anyone know of a supplier of brake van external pipework, in particular a single White pipe that exits the side of a brake van near the bottom of the body on angle and either goes through the top step or goes under the body.

Please forgive my ignorance but I don't know whether the pipe is for vacuum brakes etc.

    Thanks in advance

  6. Hi all,

I did a search but could not really find an answer. I seem to remember reading on RMWeb about using real earth and dirt for ground covering on layouts but there was some preparation needed before the dirt could be graded for use. The dirt had to be heated first and that is all I can remember about it.

If anyone can tell me how I go about this I would be very grateful.

    Regards

    Michael

  7. Hi Michael ,

    Thus far , I have done 3  08's

I fit a single sugar cube and this fits just behind the front radiator grilles .

I actually stick ,or tightly fit the cube into the body shell standing slightly proud by about 1 or  2 mm .

This  allows the removable grille to be refitted with out trouble .

I know its only a couple of ml ,but it really makes the difference when refitting the body .

The last one I did may have had the protruding motor shaft cut down a tad IIRC

    Albie

    Thanks Albie,

That's probably where I have been going wrong, my speaker was glued to part where the protruding motor shaft is. Do you have any photos of your speaker installation by any chance?

    Michael
