  1. Apologies. In attempting to find an image to illustrate what I was trying to say, I inadvertantly selected a K-type. However, in my defence, it wasn't one with matchboard sides but one which had been plated over (ironically to make them look more like the all-steel K-types). Many kitchen cars had their interiors rearranged later in life and externally this showed in the kitchen window modification. I cannot find anything to say when this was done for Joan but there are photographs showing original and modified styles. Some other all-steel K-types (Belinda, Nylar, Phyllis and Thelma)had this modification done in 1947. There are photographs of sister cars of Joan showing the modified windows in 1962 and 1967. Although cannot find a clear statement of when Joan was modified it looks like she was reliveried around 1962 which suggests that you may be correct and that Hornby's 1960s livery should also have a modified window. As a contrast to this, the model of Loraine correctly has an unmodified window and earlier style crest, so that looks correct for the 1930s. If you are looking for an all-steel K-type kitchen car in 1960s livery then at the moment I'd say Hornby haven't made a correct one and you'd either have to modify the window or just accept the error. (I am aware of the danger of making this kind of statement though. Pullman information seems to be very patchy.) So I agree with your #202 post. What period and region are you modelling? It may still be possible to put together a correct rake from Hornby's offerings.
  2. Red with a black seat and the gear handle looked like the one on the yellow tandem above. Weighed a ton but you could ride and up and down kerbs with impunity. The enclosed chain also meant you didn't get your flares caught. My younger brother had a Chipper the same xmas. Purple, I think.
  3. Antony Ford's Pullman Profile books are good.
  4. The windows were modified. Roughly speaking: the model image you have shown is a 1930's car and the prototype image is in the 1950s/60s guise. Here's an example: http://www.hornbyguide.com/item_details.asp?itemid=3107
  5. Hmmm, Thomas thought to himself as his belly prevented his wheels reaching the rails "I really need to cut down on the chocolate".
  6. Would that be logged by Royal Mail? It raises an interesting question. How do you get around it, i.e. how do you prevent an unscrupulous individual constantly rejecting recorded mail thereby being able to deny knowledge of a small claims action? Does it matter?
  7. Ha, haa. Nope. I may have too many of those already. What I'd really like is one of the three-car restaurant sets but they hardly ever turn up and go for too much when they do.
  8. About a dozen in total I think. Though there's no way of knowing if there were more there before I looked. Nice to know you're going to build them rather than sell them on. That's my intention too but I'll have to settle for being a hoarder for the short term.
  9. Or perhaps the buy to put on eBay at a higher price? I was a little surprised (and pleased) that Hattons hadn't bumped up the prices to eBay levels. I'd better come clean. I bought some of them. It was unusual not to be beaten to it by some horsey bloke. Coincidentally, the last time this happened the seller had something to do with bacon.
  10. I think they are full kits Dave. The reference numbers used by CooperCraft are, for example, SID 842 for the sides and 8842 for the full kit. Although only the sides are clearly visible there appear to be other parts behind the instructions sheets in the packs. Perhaps anyone interested ought to double check with Hattons first though. (Assuming the kits are still there in the morning.)
  11. Since Paul didn't answer your second question: The strips are carefully cut with a chisel.
  12. Couple of, Ihope, more helpful questions: What stops the legs splaying out further? How will they cope with uneven floors?
  13. Eye level when I'm sat down. Are you providing chairs too?

  15. Gangs of locals wandering the streets terrifying people with their close-harmony singing?
  16. Nice work there Allan. Very atmospheric. Most of it seems upright. I think it must be the photographer that's wonky.
  17. Quick work there Dickon and looking good so far. I'm quite impressed by that plastic 'water' sheet.
  18. I was looking at several lower quadrant signals on Saturday having popped down to see GWR castle class Earl of Mount Edgcombe steam through Droitwich Spa station. Hardly a busy main line but there are around half a dozen signals of various configurations still in use there.
  19. Do kitchen extractors have closed motors? (Not the higher flow rate versions of gismorail's bathroom one but the ones in cooker hoods.)
  20. I think the thread included Coopercraft in the title and Kits From Somerset was the proprietor's user name (which he seems to have lost interest in using).
