The coaches look very good, and I agree that they would sure as hell not be uniform in reality - fading, upgrades, you name it.
I love your bridge there as well - do you know if there is an N gauge version?
N gauge DCC is a Good Idea , especially with the type of layout you will be running. The ability to set 2 slow freight trains running on the main line while using the same controller for managing shunting activities in the yard...
Perhaps an option until you can get N DCC sound will be speakers hidden around the layout with pre-recorded sound? (e.g. IR triggered sound for diesel horn coming up to a road crossing, etc)
Good luck!

Just got my set from Japan. For the kids sake I have to keep them as Annie and Clarabel... Doesn't mean I have to run them without seats and people though... Just done a bodge job with plasticard creating seats for Annie and soon be doing the same for Clarabel...
I'd be tempted to have the lighter colour wood in the crossing - or give it a white/grey coating... the sun would fade it pretty quick and weathered timbers go light grey...

re: the buffers on the corners - *modify* them to be hydraulic? They look like they are halfway there. I'll have to confirm when mine arrive... (currently stuck at Japans outgoing terminal)
I'm sure we can collaborate on this?

It reminds me of the Thomas story of the race between Percy and Harold - the driver jumps up on the top of the engine to look for the helicopter to see him i nthe distance trying to find somewhere to land....
