East West rail, Bletchley to oxford line

I noticed  today that the Police Station appears to be vacated; no vehicles to be seen in the front or rear car parks.

That is perhaps a shame as it must have been one of the longer runs of continuous stations with the Railway Station, Fire Station, BT Poilice Station and TV? Police Stations all lined up in a row.

Evening all, does anyone have any more photos to show how the work is progressing? Much appreciated!

Now the days are getting longer, I might be able to take a few soon. But with so many roads closed at the moment, it isn't just a case of grabbing a shot while passing through.....

This view from the Selbourne Avenue bridge shows the  sound barriers that have been installed from the end of the flyover along the length of the Poets Estate in Bletchley and beyond to the Newton Road bridge. Don't think it will feature in a scenic railways programme in the future!

The view is facing back towards the flyover.

That looks similar to the bridge on Little Horwood Road in Winslow, except they haven't got any sound barriers,.....yet?

Whilst out walking today I heard a locomotive horn and went to Selbourne Avenue bridge to investigate. Not the best picture I have ever taken but this is a long distance shot on a phone - if nothing else it gives the idea that trains are now reaching beyond Bletchley flyover. View taken from the end of the footpath by the allotments and cemetery.

My mate and I were up there a few days ago with 6Y60 and 6Y61, things are progressing nicely at Bletchley.

This is one of those cases where you fervently hope that the graffiti artists will turn up to liven up the blank greyness. A few artful Banksies could change the outlook completely!

Yours, Mike.

I do find it strange that people want to look at that, rather than hear the odd train, yet are happy to live alongside fairly busy roads.

Having grown up with the sound of trains at all times, day and night, and noisy hard working steam locos at that, I never hear them nowadays. The sound has never bothered me. I would much rather have the sight and dound of the railway rather than an ugly wall.

Agreed, and I wonder why the barriers are even deemed necessary, given that the railway has been there far longer than the houses ?

Not sure about the legal position with reviving a long-dormant railway, but I do know that locals raised a great deal of concern about noise during the consultation process, so these may have been provided simply to keep people happy, rather than get tangled-up in a fight.

My BiL and SiL, who live just on the Newton Longville side of the bridge, facing across the road to the embankment are still twitchy about the noise question (the barriers stop at that bridge) despite me gently trying to persuade them that the trains will probably be less disturbing than the road.

I wonder whether people hear the word “train” and think “one every two minutes, belting through at 125mph” as they do at Bletchley station.

Passed an artic with what looked like a footbridge on the back this morning heading from Mursley towards the Swanbourne station compound.

For the footpath that crosses the line by the old aquaduct I wonder???

Well this evening there was a stunning almost full moon, and as I had the camera with me, I stopped at Swanbourne (ex) station. This is the view in each direction, taken with the camera resting on a fence post at around 7.15pm illuminated only by the moon.

Unfortunately the law seems to favour those that complain about noise, rather than something pre-existing.

A classic example (non railway) that comes to mind is the Fiddle & Bone pub in Birmingham.

It was very succesful & had regular music nights (jazz bands etc.) and there was no residential housing within earshot.

A new block of flats was built on land nearby, the new residents complained about the noise from the pub, an injunction was served, it ultimately led to the demise of the pub.

Much like what’s (probably) going to happen to the massive, listed airship sheds (hangars) at Cardington, which are gradually being totally surrounded by housing. Some of the houses will be in near-perpetual shadow and such is the condition of one of the sheds, during storms some of its pieces have been known to fly off. So won’t be long before they’re deemed to be a safety hazard, too expensive to maintain, an eyesore and generating health conditions due to lack of sunlight!

Didn’t something similar happen to the Stewartby brickworks chimneys which recently came down, even though they were listed too?

One of the sheds was repaired and refurbished as part of the planning permission.

I also know of at least one case where new housing was built near a farm and the purchasers then took action against the farm for nuisance (I can't remember whether noise or smells).

Jonathan

There was one farmer near where I used to live who had had planning permission for building on his farmland refused.  The smell from his pig sheds got worse and worse till eventually the opposition started campaigning to have the farm shut down.  The site is now all housing. I cannot comment on the rumour that he made the smell worse deliberately.

Out and about near Mursley today on the bike so took a few photos. The bridge over Salden Lane is progressing with the tarmac laid and joining up with the existing road. Looking west:

They are working on the safety railing and fencing . The old bridge is in the fore ground showing one of the cracks

Looking east this time. Three photos showing the old bridge on the right and the new roadway aligned with the new bridge

Then a couple of shots west of Mursley on Station Road which goes towards Swanbourne. A new footbridge is being constructed for the footpath that crosses there. Should be a good quiet spot for videoing once open!

What will happen to the old bridge? Demolition? Hope not!
