Class 06 progress & 009 layout

My but it's a long time since I put anything into the blog, however to make up for it there are two seperate items. First the 06, I had fully intended to put up a couple more entries as it progressed from grey to full green but that didn't happen. So here we are now in British Railways green and all lettered up, the weathering has started but there's a way to go yet. I know the lettering font is wrong but I couln't find the type that corresponded with all the photographs I had, and to be honest

Oh bu**er!

Early indications are that there is a fundamental design flaw in the etched parts for this conversion   To be honest, I'm a bit annoyed with myself for not spotting and thinking about it earlier. The problem is that the cranked design of inner frame, designed to bring the axlebox into the right place, without having to mill down the bogie sideframes, doesn't allow the axlebox to travel high enough up the guide.   I've now got to decide whether I press on with what I've got, milling the s

Mock up - Final Part

Mock up - Final Part Here is the final design for the layout. The wood may well be cut out today providing I don't find any more flaws with the design. I'm relieved to have finally got this far - at some points I wasn't even sure if it would happen. Please ignore the pillbox on top of the castle - this will be relocated behind the goods platform on the other side of the narrow gauge line. The photos are from last night and so are not 100% accurate but are near enough.   I'd welcome any though

Flying Banana - Part I

Summertime Garden project

At this week's Scalefour Area Group meeting there was a little banter that I've not entered any postings since 16th June. Hmmmm.......well here come the excuses..........not much has happened on the layout as a major Garden Project has been given priority by the "power that needs to be obeyed". Paint Shop Progress 1.

Now the dry(ish) weather has arrived I've had the airbrush out in the back garden. So here's what I've been up to; A1 Models Ruston 48DS. This one is finished in Revel Aqua-Color 15 yellow, sprayed over white car primer which in turn is sprayed over Phoenix Precision aerosol etch primer. It's varnished with PP matt ready thinned airbrushing varnish.     And here it is with the buffers (Gibson) fitted and sitting on its chassis;     Just needs glazing and weathering now.   Judith Ed

Not much done tonight, other than 3 out of the 4 splashers fitted, filler in the roof joins and firebox side. Also I decided to add a bit more filler to the rebuilt splasher to get a smother finish, before that I used a round grinding stone on the mini drill to shape the rear of it.

The Mock Up - Part 2

Thanks to a member on NGRM I have a new plan:     The majority of the layout mock up   Out of focus, but it's a nice viewpoint. I really like this composition as it gives a slice of the atmosphere of Calshot.   Overall I think this plan has a lot going for it, it looks similar to the prototype and works well as a layout. The composition seems to work well. A slipway will be in the foreground in front of the hangar. There may be a pier on the extreme right where the NG siding is. Th

Stepping up a notch

The next, somewhat elastic, deadline for getting this 'ere 37 finished is now Guildex in Telford. Going round the bend

I could have popped the title for this entry up for a couple of reasons.   Reason 1 On Wednesday I spent a few hours sorting out my class 11. By the end of the day it was running under it's own power (something it had never managed before). With the body work and cosmetic chassis on there was a slight sticking point that limited slow speed running, a bit of a pain but no more than that. New N Gauge Layout construction pics

Update - Brimming with enthusiasm from the Expo (was it really a week ago that I was flying back?) and keen to try and avoid the usual summer recess of modelling, I decided to try and have a go at my first 2mm wagon etch chassis.   One thing that really struck me at the Expo, was not only the overall quality of the layouts and the trackwork, but how much the rolling stock makes a difference. Not too much done tonight (had to make some jam) The splasher has been filed back, just need to grind the rear back with a mini drill to clear the wheels. Rear step units fitted (nice new castings) along with the cab roof, buffer beam, dome and drivers seat.   There is a dent in the side if the fire box that I have just noticed, it needs pushing out a bit and the point of the dent filled. The hand rail nob holes have been filled ans sanded. Also found the tender bufferbeam, so only a tank vent

door handles and stops

The best bit of any model is adding the details , well its the bit I like best anyway.   Last night I added the starts of the hinges, today they have been shaped a bit and some notches filed in to make them a little more hinge like.   I have also made some door handles that need a little more shaping, and the door stops.       Finally I have bent up some welding wire to make the grab handles     John

Final (?) Deltic modifications - Handbrake chain

This is going to be my last modification to these Deltics. There is more that could be done, but it'd be better to start with a clean sheet with those - and I've two more to be done (sometime), I've some bits to get from Mr Hanson, and some more exploration about what else one can get away with. This could include on the bogies, the lifting hooks and anti-sway loops (if that's what they're called?), the lifting bogie-end hooks, and replacement brake cylinders for starters. Hornby Stanier Coaches

Mark (46444) asked if I could weather his Hornby Staniers for him   The coaches made up a 3 coach set in BR maroon.   The Hornby finish is slightly matt. I used T-cut to impart more of a a gloss finish to the sides. I renumbered one of the Brakes as M5599M as both brakes in the set had the same number. I then masked off the sides, and sprayed the roofs with a very thin mix of Tamiya IJN grey with a little dark earth in it. I lightly sprayed the underframes and bogies with a mix made up from

extra microswitch on catch handle of lever frame

I've managed to have a go at fastening an extra micro-switch to be activated by the catch handle on a Shropshire and Herefordshire Area Group (spelled out in full to avoid being replaced by #####, the so-called scunthorpe problem) lever frame.   In order to make it so I could still take the levers apart I built it as follows:-   20mm of rectangle brass tube (K&S) saw slot in the narrow side of the tube, this allows it to feed over the tag on the lever which holds the bottom of the sprin

Tackling a K's GNR Atlantic

For the past 2 weeks I have been building turnouts for others, I think it was 5 00 and 3 EM ones and repaired a 3 way. So I fancied a change.   A friend gave me a K's GNR Atlantic kit. It had been built and then dismantled. Well on monday once I had finished and posted everything I decided to have a go at it. The motor turned the wheels but the cylinders had been badly built and they faced a bit inwards so the crossheads rubbed against the drivers. After one of the piston rods snapped I decid
