Soldering aluminium [now carriage construction]

This might seem like a silly question - however, being a novice builder - is it possible to solder aluminium? I have been accumulating various items to scratch build coaches, including aluminium sides and extruded roofs and floors. If not - what would be the best method of joining these parts together? New Layout Planning!

My new layout is going to be a fictional branch line, located somewhere on the border of the Southern and Western Regions of BR in the mid-to-late 1980’s. For those of you familiar with the Swanage preservation line, I plan to have it modeled very loosely on that station, however it is subject to change.       It’ll be a 9.5’ x 10’ shelf layout, between 12â€& 18†in width. Testing times

With Steinruecken disassembled from the move, I took the opportunity to tidy up the wiring and add plugs between the boards. My first step was to set up two buses the length of the layout on the low level boards, being DCC power and 16V AC. I used 15A wire for this task, as there's nothing like overkill where power buses are concerned! Theses run from four pads of verroboard at the board ends (attached with epoxy- I tried hot melt glue at first, but guess what that does when you put a hot solder

Bruckless Depot fenced in

Finally got around to making up nearly 2 metres of PH Designs 3 point security fencing that encloses the diesel depot at the front of the layout. After making up the first etch, I abandoned the etched supports to the posts and reinforced both posts and rails with 0.6mm nickel silver wire. This gives a really strong structure that doesn't wave about all over the place. I made up 400mm lengths on the workbench, which were then sprayed, weathered and glued into holes drilled in the baseboard with 5

Steve’s finished the footbridge over the lower yard and I think it’s blended in well and adds a bit of interest.     Still in the lower yard, some of the sidings have been partly buried in plaster to represent the ash and general waste material that was traditionally used to ballast the track in sidings during the steam era.     Still a lot of work to do on it with bits of grass and weeds etc.   The goods shed looks a little more “planted†now as well.   I’ve now fitted

The construction of Calshot - Part Three - Basic relief

Construction is ongoing on Calshot MkII. Progress is a little slow due to lack of materials but I did manage to scrounge enough polystyrene to do the majority of the first layer of the basic relief. High Level RSH 'Husky' - Rear bonnet.

I made up the rear bonnet today. The main body of it is folded up from a single etch with detail parts added. Here's a pic of it with the doors and door handles added;     The cut outs help when soldering it to the cab rear. And here it is soldered in place;     After attaching it there are a couple of riveted strips that sit along the base, which can be seen in the next pic. Soldering it in place was a bit of a pain, there are similar strips that sit along the base of the front bonnet

Paxton Yard... a scenic photo plank!

Paxton Yard? You've never heard of it? My OO gauge photo plank was getting on a bit and I wanted to try out some ballast, scenic and weathering techniques on some track work so came up with the idea of laying a couple of tracks to give a different sort of photo plank. Update - Still suffering from Expo fever and thanks to all the encouraging comments from my last post of my first wagon etch chassis build, I was keen to progress it.   The body is a Parkwood kit and a number of modifications were required to get it to fit better on the chassis. Firstly, the width of the buffer beam was reduced as this would have made the wagon too wide. Secondly, the overall length was trimmed to fit better. Thirdly, the moulding on the buffer beam was removed and a 2FS coupl

High Level RSH 'Husky' - Bonnet.

I made up the bonnet today. First the rivets were punched out, I use a gravity tool on a sheet of lead, then all the holes are drilled for the handles. The next job is to solder lengths of .4mm brass rod into grooves on the sides to form rainstrips. Then the bonnet is bent to shape and soldered to the front panel. I used 188 degree solder for most of this work. Here's a pic, bonnet rested on the footplate, before the end was cleaned up on a sheet of wet and dry;     The next job is to fit

One at a Time Please, But is this One Right?

I finally unfolded the layout on Sunday night after it's trip out the previous weekend. I haven't tested it yet, but I believe that it will work again now that it is in more comfortable climes (even if the room does get hot in the evenings, having a west facing).   Something that I became aware of is how much more stock I need to build for the layout and in the meantime I have started to chip away at the shelf of unfinished models (that have spread to the desk behind my window workbench). Motion support/Weighshaft mods

I've been fiddling with the motion support bracket over the last few nights. This little job has proved far more difficult than first expected due to the fact that it sits more over the #2 driver than a 9F and 9F's have smaller wheels!   I have had to solder in a section on top to re-inforce the bracket due to the large amount of material needed to be filed away from the vertical faces to clear the wheels.   So here it is, still with over long .7mm wires ready for all the fittings later
