Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Hello, goodevening & welcome!

Evening all, thought I'd have a go at one of these blog thingies, how difficult can it be?   Please don't expect frequent entrys from me, the modellings slow enough without blogs, groups, forums and so on!   I,m trying to finish a conversion of the old Hornby 06 to EM gauge (hence my recent request re top rear lamp iron, thanks to those that helped). Body as above, chassie by Branchlines, gear box by High Level and wheels by Markits/Romford. Very pleased with it's running, a little bodywork

A new visitor to Llanast

The solebars need finishing and I am currently pondering the buffer beams. The real lightweights had a most interesting buffer beam arrangement that isn't going to be trivially replicated with a bit of styrene strip.   (and a 24/1 with some paint on it)

Nothing to Buy! (The curse of modelling 'right now'?)

I've been getting restless lately (in a modelling sense that is), as having sworn not to start a new layout until next year (after Ring Road has done a couple of exhibitions), I've had nothing new to get stuck into.   Fanciful ideas pop up, such as making a small single board layout just to run the locos round (seemed too much effort for small return due to limitations of layout size), deciding what to do with my stalled entry into OO DDC Sound, and ideas for the next large N gauge layout...bu

Tender for the 2-8-2 continued

Some progress on the tender. Basic chassis is soldered up and ready for pickups, dragbox and NEM pocket sorting.   I've also been detailing the body, adding wire handrails and brake handles. I've also added the brass strips on the top of the coal space and fixed in a section from a scrap tender to replace the broken corner of the top lip at the front of the coal space (see where I've sanded down etc in the second photo - the replacement bit is black plastic too)       I want to produce

And they turn red...

Well, I believe many of you might know the Danish class EG 3100 goods engines, which basically are a Co'Co' variant of the German class 152 with additional 25 kV capability. These are now being repainted in the red DB Schenker livery - EG 3111 having been the first such engine to be spotted like that. There's a pair of photos of it on railcolor.net: Click and click.

A green and ivory Composite

I'll be honest, I've made absolutely no progress with Blanche - I can't face filing a coupling rod from scratch just yet, and I'm seriously considering making Pete and Jen at Backwoods believe that I should never be let near etched metal with a soldering iron ever again... and they may be right.   I've not been completely idle however: the new goods stock has been primed ready for painting, and some airbrushing of the two scratch-aid bogie carriages has started... though one needs a respray an

Work Experience with Chiltern Railways - Day 2

Hi,   A run through of my Secound day (or first full day) of Work experience:   Got on the 7:15 train again, then went to the depot and got my boiler suit on. Waited around in the mess room for couple of minutes before going off with my apprentice to work on the south driving car of a Class 168/1, No. 168109, We were working downstairs (downstairs being the Underframe and upstairs being the Interior).   We started off by testing the TPWS (Train Protection and Warning System) overspeed sens

18 - Kyle - Progress...

Update - 18 days left and a bit more progress.   I have constructed the base for the wall on the backscene and also the base of the road bridge which will act as the scenic break to said fiddle yard. The wall (as in the previous mock ups) is pre-attached to the backscene as will be the station building modelled in relief. I am experimenting with the backscene which will probably be some cut and paste and photoshop images from Kyle. Sorry about the 90° corner to the backscene as I can't get a

Gloucester Road - some progress

Its been awhile since I have made any updates, and here is one reason:   Chloe an Australian Cattle dog, texas heeler mix, she is nine months old and taking to training well, our three cats are less certain of the latest addition     The other reason is spring has sprung so work in the garden and cycling has started up, but purchased the "small corner shops" and started putting those together. It will be low relief on the backscene at Brimsley (shops only) and full size with pub in Glouc

Ready to Run?

Not yet but I did have a productive weekend wiring up track. All the dropper wires bar the vees and wing rails are now in place and soldered up. I used up some stranded wire that looked small enough without being silly with flexible insulation. The wire (pre-tinned) is passed through a hole drilled adjacent to the rail on the operator side. The wire is bent towards and then parallel with the rail, fluxed and then helod underneath the rail whilst the soldering iron (with a small pointy tip) is in

2-Bil ready for the paint shop

I finally tracked down some suitable square shank buffers for the 2-Bil. They are Slaters GWR coach buffers, and are sprung. Not cheap but very nice.       This has spurred me in to finishing this unit. The inner ends have been detailed with various bits of wire and plastic (not the best photo as the roofs aren't attached and the toilet fillers aren't properly attached yet),       The worst bit was doing the toilet filler pipes - I hate bending bits of wire in umpteen different direc

Coal 21

Having done the fitted version, I've also turned out a trio of the unfitted 21 ton mineral wagon.     This is a Chiver's MDV modified to remove the top doors (with a very sharp scalpel), and mounted on a Parkside chassis to represent the unfitted welded variety which nobody does a kit for. Even in 4mm scale there are plenty of common wagons that aren't available as kits.   It's riveted cousin is a straightforward build of the Parkside kit. The only modifications are buffers, wire handrail

Work Experience with Chiltern Railways - Day 1

Hi Guys,   Well as you may well know, I'm doing my Work Experience with Chiltern Railways at their Aylesbury Depot. I started it today (Monday 26th April) and will be there for 2 weeks until the 7th May. So here's a run through my first day under the 'employment' of Chiltern Railways:   My Work Experience placement starts at 8:00am, so I got the train from Great Missenden Station at 7:14am, with it getting in at 7:30am. After hanging around the station for 15 minutes, I went over to the Depo

Throwing in the Towel

After some consideration I have decided to withdraw Colwyn Bay Goods from the GJLC. Due to personal reasons, I can not complete the layout to a standard where I would be happy with by July.   Thanks to everyone who followed the thread and gave up time to help with research and construction advice. The layout will go into storage and I hope to have another attempt over the coming winter months.

The baseboards progress

The need was for super-light weight & to fit the boot of my small family car (Diatsu Sirion). With various off-cuts of MDF and plywood I came up with the estimate that a 'coffin' 3' x 1' x 1' would nicely slide into the boot. Thus was the size of the layout fixed Next was the basic construction. "Super-lightweight" really ruled out the good old 2" x 1" and chipboard but I ruled those out many years ago. 3mm ply with 1" x 1/2" PAR built up in box girder was also likely to be too heavy; tri

Agent of chaos

Thanks to a spiteful letting agent and practises which would probably be illegal in Britain (and if I'd not been in a fixed term contract, would be illegal here), I will become temporarily homeless this weekend. For how long I don't know, I'm determined to find a better quality house this time (which actually has insulation and draught proofing) and I'm comitted to a month in a temporary solution, a serviced apartment. That may sound a bit dramatic, but it's legally true. As such, I've had to di
