Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Network rail scale track reworks in the garden

Due to the impending arrival of a new trampoline for my daughters I have had to make some compromises in the garden. The main result is flattening the rockery, removing and moving the return loop that was at the bottom of the garden. Of course to them it may seem as though I lost the battle that was being mediated by the domestic planning authority, of course, it was a tactical loss, I may well have lost the battle but when you see how much further away the return loop is... I think I may well h

More Scratchbuilding?

After what I said the other day I was surprised to see myself picking up the scalpol and eagerley starting work on the next building for the layout. Indeed the work seemed to be a bit easier and (perhaps) a little better. As posted previously I am using an Oxford Diecast plastic box as the base which the plasticard structure will be added. I have so far made the 4 walls in plasticard and established that a piece of 80thou plasticard at the top is enough to counter the box's slightly tapering sid

Dirty limpet: Scratchbuilt springs

I thought I should man up and have a go at paring the Bachmann leaf springs off the TTA underframe and replacing them.     So armed with a new scalpel blade I set to. It's really fiddly work and quite tedious, I would guess it took me about an hour to get rid of all the mouldings and clean up, and of course I managed to make a few small gouges in the chassis which oughtn't be there really. Then another hour to make new springs from styrene and curve and fit them. That was a lot more fun Th

OOn3 Ruston 48DS - final notes and haulage trials.

As both locos are almost ready for the paint shop I'll share some thoughts on the build. My aims with this project were; To build a 3' gauge Ruston, To see how far I could go with detailing the A1 Models kit, To build my own slow running compensated chassis, To build a 48DS with the correct wheelbase with the right amount of daylight under the frames. (The EM loco wasn't originally planned, I decided partway through that it wouldn't take much extra effort to build a second loco). I'm happ

1 - Kyle - That's all folks...

Update - Good morning - my final update as I start to pack my hand luggage for our flight today.   There are a good number of things we didn't get done and a fair few that I am not happy with, but I have now run out of time and the layout will make its UK debut tomorrow at the Burgess Hill Model Railway Club Exhibition as planned.   I am hoping their will be time this evening to do some last minute stuff, i.e. toning down some of the scenery, applying some MIG powders to the rolling stock et

Ho hum, not much done.

Nearing the end of a week of leave. Started out with the best of intentions to get some work done on the layout. So far have done nothing. I do have excuses though. Monday I caught up with some old friends at lunchtime and evening, Tuesday, MoT'd the car and met up with some more old friends. Wednesday and Thursday I actually did some modelling of sorts, I finished putting crews in my steam loco's, 60 odd figures to paint and fix, but well worth the effort. Oh, and I mowed the lawns and fixed o

Barrow Road - Wheel Drop

While on the subject of the wheel drop I have enlarged a view of the wheel drop shelter taken from inside the shed. I am intrigued to know what was the purpose of the 'cupboard' doors at the based of the side wall. Another photo in my possession suggests their were similar 'cupboards' on the other side of the shelter. They could of course be for storage but maybe they gave access to the 'hydraulics' of the wheel drop. Ideas anyone?

Herring Test Build

After a few "cut n' shut" style modifications I have just about finished the first test build. The top sides have been lowered and the overall hopper shortened by .3mm. Next to that, it all seemed fit.   Even thought it looks a bit worse for wear, I'm quite happy with the out come. I just have to design the hopper operating mechanisms and the vacuum braking components.   Also, since have your attention;   I am still after any images of Herrings you may have. I am modelling the GWR design

Planned expansion

The current 'continuous running' topic in the main forum reminded me how long it is since I updated this, so:   It is still very much a goer of a project, and it is likely that I will be starting (with help from Re6/6) on extruded polystyrene-type baseboards in the near future - although on past experience I'm not going to state any timescales!   It has also grown a bit and is now about 20ft by 9ft. The reason for this is to give a longer scenic runpast section and storage, especially with

More grass and weathering

For various reasons I haven't done much modelling in the last couple of days, and not posted the video I made earlier in the week. I had been doing a bit more weathering on the rolling stock, but mainly adding grass, well the base coat to it anyway ! Seems endless at the moment, but fun non the less. Im still unsure of how to get the moorland look I want for the foreground, Im thinking of painting it glossy dark, grassing sections and leaving patches river-lets etc to get an

Barrow Road Update - Wheel Drop

The extension to road 14 includes the hydraulic wheel drop and I have just made a visit to the History Centre in Chippenham to obtain copies of drawings of the electrical operated one from Bricklayers Arms [ now on the Mid Hants I believe] and another generic LMS unit produced by Ransome & Rapier of Ipswich. I have yet to find one for a hydraulic version. As a result there is a space left - 11ft 6in - on this road while I await a response from Manchester Records Office who have some informat

JMA hoppers again

This project though moving along painfully slowly, is moving again! The wagons have had the blue and grey paint applied, this has been such a long time coming and although theres still a lot to do, its good to see them starting to look like JMA's. I used precision paints national power blue and grey, but to fade it to the level that these wagons have appeared in for the last few years a lot of white paint was added. I decided this would be the easiest and hopefully the way to get the most con

Tender ready for paint

Enough fiddling, it's ready for paint! I've shot a quick Youtube vid so you can view in it 360 degrees. At least in it's unpainted state you can see where I've been   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RN_LS_eDpVc   Don't let SWMBO find out what I've been doing with her rotating spice rack

Out and about in the Hessian diesel country

Hello again .     As I had no obligations today and the weather, after a bit of initial doubt, did turn out to be quite stable I packed my camera and went on a small tour through the countryside northeast of Frankfurt, which is called the Wetterau and has the city of Friedberg (which speakers of English would have to pronounce like "freedberg") with about 28,000 inhabitants as its primary centre. There are three non-electrified railway lines in this area, two of which I eventually rode - the

A roof (finally!)

Its taken me long enough, but I finally made a roof for the building I have been scratchbuilding. Like the rest of the building it is not perfect but I am content with it since it is my first effort. To be honest though, I am not going to continue scratchbuilding. I have given it a go and found that I am not accurate enough to make the cuts in the right place. In fact I find that my hands are quite like blunt instruments when doing work like this, so unfortunately after the first two buildin

deprivation symptoms

after my last layout, a planned GWR branchline was completely ruined by a leaky garage roof, and when i say ruined that could be counted as an understatement, a torrential downpour, me not investigating for a couple of days then going to 'play trains' to find using MDF as a baseboard was a bad idea, track really does corrode, and gaugemaster controls go bang when they get wet. as a result i packed up all the surviving parts into a box and forgot about railways for a time. its like anything, once

A layout plan I'm happy with!

Click on image to enlarge Well, here it is! ( I can almost hear the sighs of 'At last, I thought he'd never shut up' ) It's been a long time coming but I think I've finally worked out a design. I must have bored you rigid with the amount of plans I've been doing and my plethora of postings about planning indecision! Hopefully this design will work. On the left hand end we have a 2ft fiddle yard including a 3 road sector plate for the SG line (thick grey lines) and 3

Moving House

Not much modelling to report as over the last week or so we've been moving house. This house at least is ours (well mainly the bank's) and so I can start proper modelling.   Well I could if I actually had somewhere to build the layout.   For the time being the railway is all in boxes in storage, whilst I save up to build a big shed at the bottom of the garden.   Site of the new shed (hopefully)     Till then and once the house has stopped looking like a furniture repository, I can c

A scenario in 4ft

Today I took an hour off my busy revision schedule to continue planning the new layout. This is the latest (!) idea. There are bits I like, and bit's I don't.   I like the left hand end of the plan, but I'm not sure about the station as by the time I've marked out 47cm, there isn't a lot of station that can fit there! The station by the way is based on Lymington Pier as it was. I particularly liked the buffer stops that ended abruptly at the quay edge!     The second sketch shows the ba

Fruit Transfers

After a week of waiting for a reply from Fox, Cambridge Custom and Modelmasters and still not a peep (a bit disappointed in the lack of response tbo) I've decided that I'll have a go at making my own decals. So I ordered some decal paper, white and clear and I've read up a fair bit on how to best go about this.   I'll be using my BR Fruit D as a test case, but there's a big catch. The only way to print white on a deskjet is to print the decals on white paper using a colour to contain the white
