Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Baseboards completed

Most of my modelling activity in the last month has been on odds and ends that, in themselves, are too insignificant to post anything about, but will eventually find their way into blog pages in some form or other. On the workbench, I've been servicing motors and chassis, and fitting DCC decoders to some of the recently acquired HO and HOe stock for the Nowhere layout.   After a couple of weeks away, I've managed to finish the second, and larger, board for Nowhere. This has now been brought in

And then there were two....

I attended the Amersham model railway show on Saturday with my teenage son, and he came away with a purchase. A part finished Cotswold kit of a 72XX! Now, I wonder, is he trying to outdo Dad here!   Anyway, the upshot is that my planned day of working on the PDK 72XX got highjacked, first by household jobs like fixing a leaking tap, but then by aiding Daniel get his 72XX chassis working. By Sunday evening I had lost my work area and tools to Daniel who was busy soldering whitemetal steps to hi

Smells Like Teen Spirit

The first bit of modelling I've achieved since Trainwest, where the 4VEP ran ok all weekend is to get a coat of paint onto the body to become 60074. Lack of modelling has largely been down to weather and workings like this: 47739 'Robin of Templecombe' passes Avoncliff with 4Z47 Gloucester yard to Eastleigh with ex Fastline hoppers for store 13/4/10 The welcome return of a tug to the Robeston - Westerleigh Murco circuit. 60096 lifts the train of empties up the gradient near the junction i

Rannoch goes Digital

Hi Everyone,   I don't really get around to updating the Blog much but thought I would let you know than Rannoch has been wired up ready for DCC control. I still have one board to finish at the viaduct end but having installed all the droppers from each track section as I built the layout the job of joining everything up on the 3 boards was completed in a day and apart from the slight issues with the3 way points the layout has gone over to DCC control using my Gaugemaster Prodigy. See my layou

Was it a waste of time ?

Just spent 1½hrs working on this fence. The posts were put in a few days back. Tonight I added the wires.   You can just make out the wire. I used fishing line for this as it worked out pretty much to scale. Thing is, from normal viewing distance it cannot be seen, hence this topics title. I will persevere though, or at least until I run out of fence-posts.

Blogging on Blogs

I know not everyone likes blogs, I have to say I have grown to like the format and find it a good way to "post" updates when normal threads are specific to layout or gauge. For some time now I have been blogging here within the RMweb site and am suprised to say I have had quite reasonable size following given I don't do very popular scales in the main.I do maintain a website for RJR but find it can be either quite "static" or needs a lot of updating to remain current. So for the past few days I ha

A bit more done...

Hello Again   I thought I would put together another post to show what I have been upto...     Inspired by another thread I had a go at making a 2mm scale padlock. According to the size of it, it works out at around 3 inches square.     Here it is fitted to my new little hut I made. From that photo it looks a little too big for a padlock. That photo shows the laser engraved brickwork quite well. The building still needs weathering but I will do that when I next am using the airbrush

Further building work

Heres a few photos of the concourse as mocked up.   Its made from 80 thou plastic sheet, supported beneath by 80 thou strips cut 10 mm wide. On top of this will go scribed paving to bring it up to the level of the building and metcalfe cobbles for the road surface.     And here's one of the main entrance to the GWR offices     Well, back to work   Rovex

RJR Goes "N gauge"

Having been on Holiday last week with the family, as is always the case when board on the beach my mind wandered to what could I do if I was in the shed. Some time ago I started the G scale micro layout to let mea) do some finer 1:24 detailing than would be normal in the garden.B) give me a chance to run the G stuff even when it was cold and wet.The later of the 2 reasons never really worked out as due to an oversight I built it in 2 halves adding up to 8', as everyone knows an 8' shed is 8' out

45072

A little more work on 45072.   Having looked at some more prototype photos it looks like 45072 had a black headstock (whereas the base model I am working on was red). So today it was out with the black paint to correct this.   Once that was dry the next job was to make a start on the bufferbeam detailing. Again working from photos the 5 pipes were added, air and vac pipes were from Heljan (Class 47 parts) and the air control pipes were Vi Trains. This gives the prototypical look with di

Wheal Tiny name board

Following Shortliner's quests for magnetic letters for his 2010 chalenge layout, I purchased a tub of similar items from the local Early Learning shop.   Juggling with the contents, I have manage to come up with the following :     This will, of course, be painted once the glue has dried - though not sure what colour as yet...   Stu

Cylinder slope

I think Horsetan is right, there is not enough slope to cylinders, this view shows them better.       A little more progress last night, I really ought to get on with the chassis however.

A Lighter Shade of Green....

While Volcanic ash has stopped air travel and caused mayhem at the airports and the wife to be is busy with business and family issues up North. I've been beavering away with Bulleids as usual   34001 Exeter is on the final stretch and will be finished shortly.   34049 Anti-Aircraft Command is currently being tweaked.   And for a change work has finally commenced on a Malachite Green B of B, using a donor 21C159 (Sir Archie) I'm recreating 34050 Royal Observer Corps in it's original guise

Calshot MkII v.3

I suddenly had an idea today, pretty basic, but it's given me some ideas for half of the layout. (Stop laughing at the back!) "Why not copy from the prototype?" OK, it had occurred to me before today, but suddenly it all seemed to fall in place. The top screenshot shows the location of the Calshot RAF Narrow Gauge Railway and shows its route (red line) along the spit across to Eaglehurst camp. Now let's zoom in a bit: Looking north towards the end of the spit we can see a jetty (ma

A few small steps forwards

Well, the 72XX has taken a few small steps forward. Now we have the next problem, the motion bracket has been laminated from three thicknesses and now doesn't fit over the slide bars. I think I will ned to look at that when I am feeling more awake. But for now this is were I am. The cab roof and the slide bar are just laid in place, everything else is firmly attached.       I really do like this loco and can see it getting ever closer to being finished, or at least to be ready to be paint

Saltney, It fits!

Took the goods shed round to the layout to see if it would fit in the 'ole Steve marked out for it.     As it seems to, and doesn't look too bad, it's time to take it off again! (Then go away and finish it..)   While progress has been slow in my workshop, Steve's finished off his water tower and re-started laying track on the high level station.

Caught on Film

Ring Road had a very extensive run last night, as it was set up for filming for the next volume of MSIM's Modern Image Layouts DVD series.   It was a great fun evening, which has hopefully produced some good shots for the DVD, including some interesting angles that will certainly show the layout in new ways. What I got out of it most though (apart from a good chat with Nigel!), was a real sense of what being on show at an exhibition is like. When running a continuous and varying stream of

In between other projects, I've been tinkering with this loco. Still not finished as of yet, but should be complete very soon. While the sun has been out all day and Stockwell Road set up,I took the time to take some photos of the loco posed on the layout.   Further updates when I've finished the Crompton.

Fruit D

After what seems like a year or two of collecting stuff and not doing stuff, I've actually got my finger out and started to turn a few of those kits into reality.   First up on the workbench is the Fruit D kit from PD Marsh. This is a whitemetal kit, and comes with no chassis or roof, though there are some under frames and a cylinder included.     It's very straightforward to put the body together using superglue. My soldering skills would probably be more like melting skills so I opted

Potterbourne

Thought it was about time to create a blog for myself on this newly designed forum so here goes:   Potterbourne is a small GWR branchline set in the heart of Devon. The layout was designed to satisfactorily represent an actual location and be portable for exhibitions. Potterbourne took around 6 months to complete and compromises changes in my ability, first of all starting out with code 75 and progressing onto hand built track. Also which I will post in the coming weeks I have progressed into
