More Fruit and a Mink

A quick update to the Fruit D. I didn't like the thickness of the six plasticard steps so I've replaced them with some strip brass. A very fiddly job in this scale, but I think it makes a big difference.     I was also planning to put some electrical fittings on the end, but after a mock up with some wire I decided that as the relief of the ironwork on the ends of the van is way out of scale that this would only draw attention to that fact so I ditched the idea. Ah, this might be a bit awkward...

Hello   I think I have quite a big problem with the layout now. I was expecting the ballast on the second baseboard to lighten when the glue dried but have realised that its not actually going to change colour at all!!       As you can see there is quite a difference in colour between the two baseboards and to say its a bit annoying is an understatement! but I know that it cannot go right all of the time. It now looks like I will have to chip all the ballast off and redo it as I canno

Calshot MkII - 3D designs - Module one with added map

Having another go with the 3D modelling today and I've come up with a possible design for Module One: The 3 road track into the engine shed can be seen top left.   I might be able to start building this before the exhibition next weekend.   Any ideas or suggestions? I think that I might add a water tower and a coal pound just to give the loco shed some facilities for the locos!

Dutch 33s and Regional 150

Not really managed to get as much modelling done this weekend as I had originally planned, went down with flu last week which really knocked me out so theres a lot of unfinished work on my workbench at the moment. That said I am hoping to get on and finish the window frames on my 150 this evening. OO Roundy Layout

The start of something small!

Well, both 'Wold's-End's' layouts are so called finished, Yep I know there are things that could be improved, but they seemed to go down ok at Mansfield exhibition, although I did have to point out that they were the same!   I have the roundy Thomas and friends layout, so I can give the N-gauge locos a good run round on that when required. Delayed action couplings part 2

I spent the afternoon fiddling with couplings and have a bit more to report then last time. See here for the basic idea and where it came from. I wanted to try the delayed action couplings at both ends of vehicles, i.e. the normal tension lock setup with a hook at both ends, as opposed to Christopher Payne's version which only mounts the hook at one end. Apart from flexiblity, this would mean locos wouldn't have to mount hooks at all, and could just have a neat wire loop and full buffer beam fit

Calshot Mk II - 3D designs - Eaglehurst Camp

Another Friday, another night to unwind doing my favourite hobby. This time, I've spent more time than I probably should have doing a 3D plan (which I started yesterday as you may have seen in the gallery). I'm pretty pleased with it so far, and it shows as accurate as possible (with only two photos for reference) what the loco shed and stores at Eaglehurst Camp (Calshot) looked like in the 1940s. I've been sent a T Gauge Hankyu 9000 EMU to have a play with and attempt to Anglicise, using scaled down N Gauge ERG artwork - never one to refuse a challenge!       The coach in the background is a Dapol N gauge MkIII, BTW...       2-HAP vinyls added to the donor unit. The only modification done here is to unclip the roof air-con pods. End nearly in sight, time for a bit of cab detailing.

The cab and backhead for this kit is rather Spartan in detail other than a whitemetal backhead you don't get much else!   See what I mean:   The backhead isn't really quite right as the firedoor is to low and the backhead layout is wrong, but in saying that I have no pictures of them while they were running on the GWR. The only pictures I can find are of GCR engines including the preserved example so I've used a fair amount of modellers licence regarding cab layout and detail.   I start

Tender for the 2-8-2

Well folks, I've made a start in reality rather than just buying bits and planning. The 2-8-2 is under way   Comet tender frame soldered up and fits the Triang tender body like a dream     Keen eyes will notice the tender body has had all the moulded handrails removed and also I've removed the (damaged) lip from the top of the coal space. I'll glue 20 thou' brass strip on the top surface to sort this once the body has been stripped of all paint.   Next steps is the tender chassis whic

Holiday progress...

A recent house move has almost halted my building progress, but fortunately, I took my tools and some brass with me on holiday this week (to Primrose Valley, Filey, North Yorkshire) and of an evening did a bit. Both kits are from the Mercian 'Knightswork' range, and are the FR Closed Van (Side Door) and FR Carriage Wagon.   Both kits go together pretty quickly, and are easy to fettle to get smooth running out of them (I'l be adding some weight to them now I'm home). Royal Deeside railway

Eridge Mk 2 - rebuild of a P4 layout

The old Eridge platforms were on a slightly different alignment to the new Mk2 Templotted version, so new ones have been made - and it's certainly nice to see them on the layout again!       Meanwhile this nice little H class has appeared from somewhere     Trackwork is nearly all finished, with just a bit of tidying up by the P Way Dept

Having taken the day off to get ready to take Wheal Elizabeth to the Epsom show, I've finally got around to putting up all the baseboards and taking a picture or two. My carpentry is never going to win any awards. Nothing in our house seems to be square or flat and my baseboards are no exception. Mark1 track plan has been laid to give a flavour. After the Epsom show, I've a break until it goes out to Scaleforum. The plan is to start trackbuilding on the Bristol EM demo stand next weekend and see

Test Track Complete

Actually finished the track laying on Saturday, but the wiring was still a mess. Finished that off tonight and for the first time in a very long time got out some of my RhB HOm rolling stock. So out with the railcar and the rebuilt Ge 4/4 I, 605 Silvretta. Here seen with two Saloons and a restaurant car.   All the curves are minimum radius, so if a loco can get around that, it should cope with whatever layout it's ever run on.

Update - Evening peeps - Jack Bauer I am not...24....that's just the number of days left until I exhibit Kyle. The good news is that there has been some progress and I would have posted earlier but I had problems to sign in until yesterday.   The layout is now wired and tested and bar a few grumbles through the tweaked points, the class 37 seems to cover every bit of available track. Next week I will spray the track and begin ballasting.   Following a rethink, I have remade some of the boar

Fleet Progress, N Gauge Severn Valley Railway (sorry, no bridge progress yet!)

Blogging has been slow of late, due to glacially slow progress on model making, and a broken camera.   Anyway, excuses out of the way   The last bit of N gauge work I mentioned was the 'retro modern image' SVR wheelchair saloon, as part of a representative rake of SVR blood and custard Mark Ones. You may recall that this rake is composed of a motley selection of old Minitrix and Lima products from the parts bin, I see it as a good way to practise my own ham fisted brand of scratch-bodging
