Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Road Bridge

A little more progress before work this morning, A quick test showed that it dosnt appear to need a central arch to support the brick work, the two arches along with the vertical at the bottom are enough to do the job on their own.   As a result I took a simpler option for adding the deck support, with a length of 80thou across the centre above the hight of the arch, and a triangular cross brace between the corner and the central spacer.   I am now debating whether or not I will use the same

Kit-bashed roof structure

The roof structure for the "The depot" has been underway for some time as I've been busy with other things, but it is now nearing completion (sketches of the goods depot can be found here). My original idea was for a large single span roof, but after ploughing through photos and obtaining some sound advice from fellow RMwebbers (thanks everyone!). I decided on multiple lesser spans instead, of which two are visible on the layout.         The structure is built from

Hornby class 73/0

The 2-Bil is nearly complete - I'm currently adding the vast number of rain strips to the roof. No photos as bits of white plastic on a white roof doesn't really photograph.   I've also made a start on my Hornby 73/0. This is it straight out of the box. The first step was to replace the overscale wheels with the Alan Gibson rewheeling pack. This is sold for EM, but can be used for finescale OO. The wheel profile is the same, and although the axles are too long this doesn't show. And the whe

100,000 Views - BRWS Episode 1

It had to happen eventually!   The British Railway Series: Episode 1 has just registered 100,000 views. It is the first of my videos to hit the six figure numbers, and after three long years, I'm delighted it's got there eventually.   Here's to the next 100,000 on Youtube!   Thanks to everyone on RMweb and elsewhere for their continued support and encouragement.   Simon

Road Bridge

Made a start on the road bridge at the station end of the layout today, with the construction of the core structure.   This is built from 80thou plasticard as a pair of boxes with the two arches connecting them. Once this is fully dry a central divider will be fitted to each side (along with a third arch) which will give further support to the 80 thou deck once it is added.   This will then be clad in South East Finecast embossed brick plastic (the prototype I have based it on appears to ha

Let there be light.

Decided that the layout needs some form of lighting. After costing out the streetlights, I decided to have a go at making my own. I will be putting them on two circuit. The night one will include the station and street lighting, plus some of the upstairs in the shops and the chipshop ,pub and cinema. The daytime one will do the shop interiors, goods shed. I purchased some white LEDs and copper tube for the street and station lights and tonight put together a prototype.   This is the design

OOn3 Ruston 48DS - chassis drawing.

Here's a drawing of the chassis frames. Apologies for the quality! The chassis sides were made from .025" brass strip, chosen over .016" to make filing easier and for a larger bearing area for the front axle. Spacers for the EM loco are Gibson and for the the OOn3 version I made my own from strip, 7.5mm wide. Bearings again are Gibson and are only fitted to the rear driven axle, small bearings on the OOn3 and large bearings on the EM version. (Gibson do 2 sizes of 2mm bearing). Note the co

Weathered Wagons - Experiments

A few recently completed wagons. Two of the 21 ton VBs are now done in contrasting styles, one fairly tidy and the other contrastingly scruffy. I've been experimenting with tinted varnishes (Humbrol Mattcote with Humbrol matt 100 or leather (62) blended with Metalcote Gunmetal and a touch of matt white in this case), applied with a brush rather than an airbrush since I don't have one to hand. This is built up in thin, transluscent layers with varying amouts of tin to get the colour balance I was

Progress and whetting the appetite!

Just a quick entry today with time enough to show you how I am progressing with the layout plan. It has taken me many hours to get to this stage on the 3D model, the textures aren't brilliant though. The main shell of the layout is shown, awaiting track, buildings, vegetation and the odd bits such as groynes and a jetty... Hope it whets the appetite enough, I should be able to get most of it done by tomorrow night! I appreciate there isn't much to see at the moment, but it should all become cle

A monster is born !

The lonely nights in front of the TV finally got the better of me last night and with 2 days off work I decided it was time to get into a new project and make the space problem work one way or another. A full blown layout was out of the question, a shelf layout is being done in my lad’s new bedroom and with photography on dioramas being the thing that really floats my boat I decided to go for another. This time a little larger and a bit more adventurous on the scenic side !   A bookcase in

Backhead

Just a quickie from the ongoing (painfully slow at the mo') Austerity project. A new, scratch-built backhead from scraps of plastic, brass wire, fuse wire, copper wire, bits of scrap etch and some etched details (Mainly Trains regulator handle, London Road Models handwheels). The funny looking gauge glasses are copied from here: http://janford.fpic..../p50833431.html     There should be a few more bits of pipework but in the depths of the cab and with a crew in the way, what's there will be

Peak detailing

A start on detailing up my model of 45072,   Having already done a renumber to 072, and fitted some screw couplings, I've started detailing the rest of the chassis starting with a set of Shawplan's new etched lifting brackets. Having cut all the parts from the fret the first job was to fold the smallest part into a U shape and then glued (they can be glued or soldered) into the main body. Once that was dry the main component was folded up (keeping the folds on the inside) and everything was

how I take pictures

Hello   In one of my previous blogs Alex asked how I take my photos so as promised here is how. Now before I start I want to point out that I am far from a photography expert or anything and this is how I do it. It probably is wrong in some way but it works for me!     This is how I set everything up. The two lamps are 60w daylight bulbs, the embankment is a bit of left over foam sheet with a bit of track stuck to it and covered in some very well trimmed fake fur, the backscene is an A3

Nottingham Show Report

Firstly I'd like to add a vote of thanks from myself and disco-dave to all the guys and gals at the Nottingham Model Railway Society for their hospitality all weekend. Were looked after very well, even to the extent of moving the demo tables to clear the end of my layout when it became clear that the legs would be kicked all weekend as the main access to the inside of our "block" was, yes, you guessed it, right next to my layout   Had a thoroughly brilliant weekend, it all went too quickly,

Cul Uisge - Kyle in 4 feet - Stock Plan

I've been looking at my stock and deciding on what I need to buy and what is excess. The main running era for the layout is 1975-77 with the odd foray back to 1972 (purely so I can use my Clayton ) and forward to 1985 (to use my Large Logo 37s). Some of the stock may be renumbered/renamed before it's used. I've put some links to pictures on the old RMweb/fotopic where possible.   Locos :     Heljan Clayton in BR Blue (currently D8529) Bachmann 24/1 Conversion in BR Blue - D5116

When all things considered..

Morning all,   Firstly, I must change this blasted song in my ears! Ahhh, Free - Wishing Well. Thats better. :)B)   Anyway, I'm starting to wonder if someone high above my position in this life is playing silly thingys with me. I finally have the hours at work to get the money and crack on with my 2010 Challenge plans, but I've had an invite for Embranchment Particulier to the 28th Annual Festival of Model Railways & Hobbies in Southend towards the tail end of November. This is good news

brackhampton - building continues

Building work continues a pace. The shells of the East and West pavilions have been fashioned and work has started on the front of the central section. The following photos show the ground floor cut out and glued in place. This piece has been scratch built from a large sheet of 80 thou. It has been scored to match the ground floors of the end buildings. The floor of the passage way has also been scribed to represent Victorian Paving slabs (3ft by 2ft). Three porticos will need to be built one fo

Foot bridge

Little bit of work managed on the layout this evening, making a start on the Ratio footbridge, the central span is a little bit longer than it ideally would be (but its near enough that it can be worked round rather than having to start hacking it about even more.) Because I am building the 5 panel version, it left bits for a 6th panel spare, this was used to give the extra span between the steps and the embankment.   The plan now is to get this section painted, paint the panels and roof su

workbench update; Yellow scharfenburg, a Dirty 101 and reformed DVT

Hi,   Another abundment of images with text to hopefully make sense of it all hopefully, with my improved photography (well I think so at least )   The 73 fleet is coming along well, although shortly I am going to Focus on other trains that have been put on the back burner thanks to my small fleet of three class 73s, being 73101, 118 and 129. 73101 now has had the underframe, and bufferbeam sprayed black, and I must say im really pleased with my work on it so far, the rebuilt underframe is

stock increase

Nothing much to update other than some extra stock, I've been working far to hard of late so thought i'd treat myself, recently picked up a Loadhaul 60, The dummy EWS 67, 4x MOAs( very nice to) a dutch seacow, pair of container wagons, also the Bachfar offices and a lovely piece of technology that will run one of my signals automatically. must catch up on weathering and detailing now.   Graham.

Light rail excursion around Frankfurt, 20 March 2010 - part 2

Well, having formatted the remainder of my photos I would now like to show you the second round of images from Saturday's light rail excursion . The previous part ended at Oberursel-Hohemark, this being the northern terminus of the U3 line. Next, though, our schedule called for us to return to Heddernheim once again, there to reverse direction and head to Ginnheim, which is the northern terminus of the U1 line.       While waiting for our departure at Hohemark I took a detail shot of the
