Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

First baseboard built.

The first baseboard has now been built for one of the 'generic' scenery sections. It has worked out very well indeed. Pink 50mm polyfoam insulation board was used, (available from B&Q at about £20 for a pack of four [1200mm x 500mm]). 100mm deep 4mm thick birch-faced ply was glued to the long sides with 'No More Nails' type solvent free grab adhesive and 9mm marine ply was used for the 'FREMO' style ends, with patternmakers dowels fitted. Underneath transverse bracing was fitted (6mm thick

Virgin Cross Country Class 47s

Before I went off on to Tignes on my holls, A package from Hattons arrived containing another cheap Vi Trains 47, this time in Virgin. Given that the Seven Valley Railway name was applied well after the period in which I want to run the loco, I am going to renumber/rename to something which received its name a bit earlier.   Most annoyingly my preferred choice (47817) also received its name too late (1999) which as discussed elsewhere on the forum has resulted in a need to find another loco t

Bank holiday flag laying

Bank Holiday weekend and some pallets of flags arrived     For in front of the new buildng         Fitted a trough drain across the doorway     and spring seems to have brought on some plant life across the hardstanding and in the damp corners     John

Another hurdle jumped with 59004

This shows the current situation with 59004. While I have been working to get a 4VEP ready for Trainwest this coming weekend I've managed to slap some black paint on the underframe. Dropping it on the way in from the garage didn't help, but I don't think it's noticiable now. I must get round to getting the transfers printed, and will hopefully get the name and numberplates from Brian at Shawplan over the weekend. Then its just windows and handrails before weathering! It's finally getting somew

Power car variety - Executive Livery

Good evening - I have a fleet of 14 Hornby HST power cars for Laira , and need a bit of variety in the fleet - so to break things up a bit , I have already modelled a buffer fitted DVT conversion , and have a Mirrlees engined example on the work bench aswell. To add to these two I'm modelling 43183, which, thanks to some help from you guys last year, I found out was one of the last Exectuve livery power cars , (on the western region anyway). The paintwing work is done - I've retained

Bank Holiday Bizarre

Had big plans for today but ended up doing lots of different little jobs and at 5pm wondered where the day had gone and wasnt quite sure what I had achieved ?!   After a big tidy up of kit I got a bit more scenic work done round the cabin on the low level.   Spent the morning weathering the first of what I hope will be a complete rake of 10 Seacows in Mainline Blue. The complete train will hopefully feature a pair of sound fitted Cromptons in Mainline branded grey or dutch in the future.

Debate: What makes exhibition layouts interesting

I was thinking during my struggles to come up with a plan for Calshot MkII what I would want from it when I exhibit it locally - and perhaps what other people might like to see.   Here are some of my thoughts;   1) Mainline 'roundy-roundy' - That enjoyment of watching prototypically long trains go round. 2) Something unique/unusual - That 'oh, that's a bit different' thought. With Calshot, I would like to think it falls under this category. 3) Based on a well-known prototype - Again, I wou

Rail-icious Easter on the Rhine

Well, here I am, back from a brief vacation over the Easter weekend . As my girlfriend's uncle had his 60th birthday yesterday we had assembled at Kaub on the east bank of the Rhine - which of course is a major transit artery both on the water as well as on rails.   As some of you will probably know, two major rail lines have been built along both banks of the Rhine. The West Rhine Railway ("Linke Rheinstrecke") serves to connect Cologne and Mainz, passing Bonn and Koblenz along the way, whil

First viaduct section mockup

This is a very preliminary and loose-fitting mockup of the carcasses of two of the piers and a section of arches - less than 1/12th of the whole thing. This was built entirely of 2mm MDF (apart from the spacer blocks!) to try one or two construction methods out. It's also convinced me more than ever to outsource as much of the repetitive cutting as possible for consistency, and not just the arch and decorative details.   The piers are in two sections, a lower rectangular section plinth and a

Saltney, ooo me trusses too!

Decided to stick at 5 trusses, which I think gives a full enough look without being too crowded. I've included an internal picture of Waverton goods shed (LNW wooden built, near Chester) as a comparison. I think Steve likes a few lights in the buildings so some level of internal details is necessary. Hopefully it's now time to start the "pretty" bits. Slaters stone walling and embossed slates. I'll probably need some detaily bits from Invertrain(windows, doors, chimneys gutters etc., Du

Not quite Spielberg !

I was going to work on the board during Easter Sunday but after reviewing the weather first thing and seeing that it was turning into a pleasant day, Joey and I decided to move board, stock boxes & Dynamis outside for a bit of a play !! Everything had a turn and a chorus of engines have been singing away all day whilst we got on with some tidying, weeding and relaxing. We also devoured a large quantity of chocolate !!   Very new to videoing my little creations, however, we have had a qui

PDK 72XX Slow Progress

Well, I finally got around to doing some modelling tonight, so much for a long weekend of doing what I want. Following on from a few hours spent during the evenings, the 72XX is progressing slowly. The handrails have started to go on, on one side, I have added the rivet strip around the base of the tanks, the lips on the cab roof and soldered up the cylinders and added the drain cocks. It's also now a 2-8-2 rather than the 0-8-0 it has been up until now. The chimney has just been rested in place

Op 14t Open Wagon - Part 2

Today a bit more time has been spent on the Op project. More work on the underframe has been completed, with the addition of some microstrip to enhance its appearance. I couldn’t help think that it was looking a bit on the weedy side.   The cut outs in the headstock/ underframe has now been completed and just require a general clean up to remove any final swarf, debris and tweak with a file to complete. Another W iron has also been fabricated.           Pictures show progre

Solid Progress

Well, so the paint shop was closed today, so it's become a train day, and repainting the windowsills will have to wait. Appearance wise, not much has changed, but there is much more nailed down than before.   In fact everything but the two spurs on the left and the right. The goods spur is for tomorrow, the bay platform spur might get done too.   Lessons learnt:   Don't nail down track too readily, I nailed down the left hand point in the crossover before nailing down the facing track!

Station Building update

I've done a little bit more to the building - and whilst it doesn't look amazing at the moment, its been a great test bed:               I think it gives an idea of what I would be able to achieve in the future. I'm under no illusion this isn't show standard - but it gives me a good stating point for the future.

Saltney, OOO me trusses!

Seems a bit busy for a Sunday here in Chester PSB Interfering with my modelling time Had a huge T3 block that had to be shortened and re-written then when the trains started running along come a load of diversions. tsk.tsk. Still... managed to cut out a roof truss from foamex sheet for the goods shed. I reckon I'll need 6 or 7 so being a lazy b+++++r I'll draw round the first one a few times rather than mark them all up. They won't be part of the structure as such, just there to create a b

Well it is green...

As promised some photo's..   First up is my slightly dirty Class 31 D5512, no chassis issues with it either as yet.     Here are some comparision shots of an unmodified Wrenn 5,250gl tender and the nearly complete one I've done for Matt (Mr Bluebell Railway)   Front View     Side View     Rear View     Should add since taking these I've lined and crested the otherside, once the transfers have dried, it will be on with the final top coats of satin varnish and final assembl

N'spirations testimonials

Yesterday I received a really nice email from someone about my N'spirations booklet that I'd like to share on my blog;   "Just to let you know I think your magazine is an excellent contribution to the hobby and I hope it is to be the first of many. I particularly admire the way you suggest that we all, including beginners, should aim for high standards, without being pedantic about it. The publication presents the information and tips in a refreshingly positive style without specifically advoc

13T Lowfit

Having found ourselves temporarily homeless due to a two week gap between selling our house and moving in to our new house, the Mrs F and I decided we'd rent a holiday cottage for the weekend over Easter. So on Friday morning we packed up the car and set off for Presteigne (Powys) with the dog and two boxfiles full of unbuilt wagon kits to keep me occupied. The fruits of yesterday's labour was a Red Panda Lowfit. As usual I was unable to build the kit as per the instructions and have gone for

musings, exhibitions and resin

Austerity 104 nears something like completion, to call this a 'kitbashed' EFE, is possibly a bit of an uderstatement, but it does include a few EFE bits. I'm pretty happy with it overall and it's more modern shape has helped me get a few different ideas about it's and other cars construction. Which leads me nicely into the 'resin' bit in the title.   The next two cars I fancy building are the 'iconic' Middleton Bogie and also 600 which was a ex Sunderland single decker, now ideally I'd like

Unique, interesting or just plain silly?

It's about time I actually involved my brain instead of persisting that 'I can't do it' or that I've got 'modellers block' when in actual fact I haven't sat myself down and really thought about the project!   I always set out to build something unusual from the very start. Yes, there are more and more RAF base layouts nowadays, but they always use the same kits. I wanted to build something unique - a seaplane base, the only layout I can think of with a seaplane base is the inspirational and
