Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Prestwin - Dear Packer No. 57

Dear Number 57, whoever you are or more probably were, today I really appreciate what you and your colleagues did all those years ago!   I'd had a Dapol Prestwin in the to-do drawer for a year or two and decided a few weeks back to put into the works. What an utter disaster it was and virtually put me off buying any of Dapol's current production of these time-served moulds. The chassis was so distorted that at rest only two wheels would touch the rails, three if a digit was placed on a corner;

Replacement building

With work on my Critter having stopped temporarily, my thoughts have turned to replacing the Scalescenes building at the back of my layout with something scratchbuilt:     I've got an idea in my head of what I want it to look like hopefully - I want it to have a small wooden loading platform with wooden steps, and I'm going to have to make some compromises with its depth so as to fit in the available space. We'll see...

Point motors

Well after a great deal of thought, I have decided that I will use tortoise point motors for the remaining 8 points. So I ordered one to try out, and have now fitted it. Can't believe I didn't do this before, So much easier to fit than a seep and no more erratic switching of the point frogs with the seep switch. Now just need to finance the rest of the tortoise motors and the NCE switch 8 decoder

Brackhampton - starting to build

The Vollmer kit has now arrived for the station hotel (honestly I've got far too much time on my hands) now how do I turn this into something with a passing resemblance to Snow Hill     The ground floor needs extending, so I've sliced the pieces in half and inserted some plasticard, scribed to carry on the stone courses. I've also spliced one side vertically and glued it either side of what was the main entrance to one of the buildings. All the cut sides were then glued to some 40 thou to g

Escorts and 'Beetles...

I was a little worried after reading some comments relating to fitting the Black Beetle to the Sentinel...   I knew it wasn't designed for the Black Beetle, however, I was a little confused because to me, looking at it, the modifications required didn't look difficult at all - although I suppose they are quite severe! The Judith Edge Sentinel is designed to use a Tenshodo Spud which has 10mm wheels so sits a lot lower than the 12.5mm wheels and the Black Beetle. As a result the mounting plate

Guards van entry 2

Last night I continued on with the guards van, I wanted a tail light but with no track power to use the van needs its own batteries. I didnt want them inside as that would mean a removable roof, so they had to go underneath. I also was mind full that the van would have to run veranda first on departure as there is no turntable, so I needed a light at both ends. To overcome this I fitted a switch with a centre off position, so either or neither lamp can be on. The switch will be on the backside s

Weyford -on-Sea

We have had trains running again on Weyford, however not as many would have intended. It was time for my newly aquired Japanese H0 loco fleet to get a run, and boy am I impressed.   First up is the EF81, in one of the many variations of freight livery. This loco has a wonderful throbbing noise from its motor. The EH500 attracts little interest from the local train spotters...suprising really as it makes a change from the usual diet of Bulleid pacifics and T9s... EF64-1000 and EF66 rest i

Station update

I have now painted the roof before the arty part goes on top...     And to prove my day was spent well:   Apple and cinnemon.

But let's not run before we can walk

Inspiring (or daunting) as the whole thing might be, we will obviously be taking this a step at a time with a view to proving the concept in exhibition conditions with just some of the possible whole.   Balcombe itself will be first, with the viaduct, and a fiddleyard each end. The fiddle yards will need to be able to accommodate 12 coach EMUs so will have to be around 12 ft long each, so that's the length of four shunting planks before we even get to the scenery! Uncompressed, Balcombe is a

Photo diorama progress

There's been a little progress on the diorama I'm trying to put together for photographing locos/stock models on (and to try out the Easitrack option). The horrid reddish brown colour is just some acrylic burnt sienna paint that I had spare and added to the water and PVA mix that I painted over the plaster to seal it. Next I need to re-address the ballast and finish it off properly with a neat shoulder, and then consider some ground cover and weathering/painting the trackwork. A fairly rural sce

The basic FREMO concept.

Here are a couple of snaps of a typical FREMO set-up. 'Hölle' in P87 was seen at Utrecht last year, with a known reprobate playing trains! This bit is only about a 20th of the whole project! There are interchangable sections which are cleverly 'scenically blended' This one was the best that I've ever seen with such good scenic continuity. Some that I've seen in the past have looked like a patchwork quilt!   We would devise our own profile for baseboard end plates, rather than using the 'lai

Kyle - Getting there...

Update - Good morning - the soap opera that is, my turnout constructions continues but hopefully will soon conclude.   I continued with the hybrid last posted with the mix of PCB sleepers and EASITRAC chairs fixed with cyno but alas, once again, it all fell apart around the commonn crossing (note to 2FS Association - a range of pre manufactured common crossings would be great for ham fisted clowns such as I ) so out came the recently arrived by mail EASITRAC sleeper strip.   If at first you

Delph - Cosmetic chairs on first point

After what feels like a lifetime of back-aching effort, leaning over the board to focus my magnifying head set thingey, I have now completed fitting the cosmetic chairs to the point on the current board. Not only did thids involve cutting each chair in half to fit round the rivet, but also reguired lots of grinding of the rivet heads either side of the rails to enable a snug fit for the chair halves. On some, I didn't quite achive this, but the overall result is quite satisfying. I did consider

Ambitious or just plain crazy?

John and I had been thinking about Balcombe as a modular end-to-end layout on which we could run full-length EMUs etc including a representation of the Ouse Viaduct. I then thought about the attraction of seeing these trains snake over some nice P4 trackwork, and Lewes floated into my head again, as it is wont to on occasions like this.   So, having Templotted Balcombe     (OS map is over 50 years old so out of copyright)   I then had a go at Lewes - 'just for a bit of fun' you underst

Guards van

Tonights update...   Well last night I started work on a guards van, but as it was all made from white plasticard I didnt bother posting any pictures as as always an all white model shows up very little detail in a photograph. Tonight I progressed it along far enough to give it a quick blast of cream paint so it is a bit more photographable ... I also added a screenshot to the lap top (I sense a caption competition) The white box van got a blast with the cream to as it had never been painte
