Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

First blog entry!

Hello!   Well this is my first blog entry, so im going to tell you a bit about my Layout, Windward and where you can find more information about it!     Windward is the fictitious location for my Scottish 'OO' gauge layout. It has taken 7 years to get to its present look. It's a mixture of Industrial, residential and rural scenery, as I wanted to make the layout look 'busy'. The continuous double track layout incorporates a locomotive depot fuelling point, shops, houses and a station.

Car problems have got in the way of getting to Stafford today so not been able to buy any regional railways blue paint, so wont be able to paint up the etches until I next see Brian to pick some up.   Next job will be working out how I am going to repower it, The choice at the moment being between one of Bill Bedford's underfloor chassis which is due later in the year, or a black beetle. The black beetle option would be an easier installation, however the lack of etched bogie spacers avai

Slow progress on painting, but I'm getting there

Nearly two months since the last post here, so time for an update, if only to show that there has been some progress.   With the chassis running quite well, I turned my attention to painting the body but, first, I needed to practice with my new air brush and compressor. After a week in which I experimented with paint/thinner ratios, air pressures, spraying distances and needle openings, as well as learning how to strip an clean the brush, I was ready to start on the buffalo.   Unfortunatel

How many of us feel like this..?

Morning all,   So, I'm blogging. Let's see how this turn out.   As the title suggest's, I'm on the plain of indecision. I get so many idea's that I feel swamped, then I decide on one, get to the point of starting something, then change my plans again. Permit me to elaborate..   I have "The Mall" in the pipeline for the 2010 Challenge..   "The Mall"   Now, this has kind of stalled due to a constant lack of funding and time. I may as well just admit defeat with the project and get it o

The Postman only calls when ...

I am away from home.   So I have a gearbox and motor from High Level and I have a replacement jackshaft from Michael (aka Judith) Edge What I don't have is time to do anything with them ...   On a completely different theme, I also have some Easy Street track from the USA to play with. I want to see if I can get it working in P4.   And ... I discovered that not one, but two layouts have been inspired by one of my designs. Shame my layout is languishing in a track mostly built condition.

Success!! Well, second time around.   Since embarking on the cab detailing exercise it didn't take me long to realise that there was little point in going to this level of detail, if no-one was ever going to see it. Sure, I know it's there and that's pretty satisfying, but every now and again everyone likes to show off a little bit   So, to that end, I decided that the cab would need to be lit, for the purposes of showing off and atmospheric night shots, which I do have a penchant for. Judith Edge Steelman Royale handrail, ride height and sandbox lids.

Well, after a couple of days thinking, I got the pliers out and attacked the front handrail - here's the result; Better, but not perfect. However it will do. I sorted out the sandbox lids today. The etched holes were opened out and .33mm rod soldered in to form handles whilst the lids were still attached to the etch, the half etched side is on the bottom to form a lip. Note the door hinges on the left of the etch. Then the lids were cut from the etch, held in pliers and cleaned up with a

If you go down to the docks today...

A cold wet windy day and a trip over to my parents in Chester gave an excuse to head down to the docks to 'soak up the atmosphere' of the former Manchester Ship Canal railway line at Ellesmere Port Docks.   I do plan to go back on a sunny summer weekend, take a proper stroll around and get a better selection of snaps but with cold weather and a busy dock entrance I didn't hang about yesterday.   Compare these shots with those I posted about the Manchester Ship Canal earlier as a comment on

3rd time lucky - improving a Bachmann 37

A trip to the Great Central Railway last weekend has spurred progress on my model of 37411.   First up - Lostock and some Smoking Barrels and the GCR itself - what a wonderful railway and a great achievement to have 8 locomotives in steam on the Sunday! From the Jinty through to Oliver Cromwell, my daughter and I were very impressed. My favourite was the BR Std 2 tender engine, Elly's was the LMS red Leander.   Some shots from the weekend - my favourite all weekend is the second one of Olive

Board yet? Baseboard progress...

Somehow even just mocking up something with wood and offcuts makes it all come to life in my mind...   Rose Hill has the beginnings of a baseboard! If you count an un-cut 18mm sheet of plywood as a beginning. These shots show her mocked up with track, Pacer and the two buildings. A view from the fiddleyard/backscene end of the layout from both sides - note the planned curved end   A few other shots... low angle and overhead A Northern Pacer waits with the 14:12 departure for Manc

A bit of everything

Evening all, Got some stuff done in a late afternoon session... Thank heavens for the variety afforded by blogs as this pot is a bit of everything !   The G layout now has the dowels fitted and all 3 lines that cross the joint are done, Im waiting for my 2 extra points to arrive at the moment though !       And here they are, stored in the shed, At the moment the On30 turntable module is sat in position on the left hand worktop, it stores on the brackets under the worktop above the G s

Office Complex - the finished article

Here are some photos of the finished building - except for the 2 chimneys and vents previously mentioned. Final weathering will take place once everything is built and in place on the layout.   Thanks for all the positive comments.   The next installment will be the roundhouse and workshop itself.               I now have to wait a few weeks before I take delivery of the main shed and workshop...... watch this space.

Saltney, fuel,film and fun.

After receiving an offer of 4 petrol tank wagons, Steve decided to squeeze a small petrol terminal in to the end of the LM station yard. Again, several bits and bobs were unearthed from boxes of stuff rescued from "Talacre" and fashioned into a representation of an unloading area. Although it's a "bitza" it began to look ok. We're not rivet counters here, it's more about having a bit of fun with the stock we have. This gave Les and Steve a chance to fill a bit of space with a roadway. This pr

New plan to keep me going

I have a large board which has been used as a fiddle yard in the past. This is in the other piece of basement which is going to be cleared for an extension to the layout. In the meantime, I am going to make myself a shunting layout on this board while I wait to clear the rest of the basement. I will use this to practise wiring a DCC layout from scratch rather than trying to bodge a DC one to DCC. It will also be smaller and therefore more likely to be finished scenicly in more detail than th

66705

Finally got some new nameplates fitted to my model of 66705, and made a start on the weathering. Not very happy with the affect that I ended up with on the sides, so started trying to wash it off, the Tamiya powders just arnt working very well over the ribbed sides so its going to need a different method. the sooty roof did come out a lot better (although the silencer looks awful...)   Comparing with photos it looks like the flag is completely wrong, in length, hight and colour which is ra

Once Upon a Time in the West (video)

Here's a little video showing scenes and train movements at Farthing station - including the arrival, shunting and departure of the Westbury stopping train. It's 2,5 minutes long. Be warned that it features music, although only a quiet piano.

more electrickery

Hello again   It was about time to post something as I have been quiet recently. I have been back onto the electrics for the layout in a desperate attempt to get something running in the traditional style of a railway layout (is a layout a layout if there arent any moving trains on it?) and with the help of Mark again helping me get a bit of woodwork done here is how far I have got with it...   This is my main board which has a few more connectors screwed to it now. Class 150 Improvements

Today I have received a pre production pack of Shawplan's new mk3 unit windows intended for use with Bratchell's multiple unit kit range (and Jim SW's etched windows). Deciding to be awkward I have set about fitting them to a Bachmann 150 instead. I have discussed before the advantages in accuracy that Jims etch brings over the Bachmann part, so see my old workbench thread on RMweb3 for more details on that. The first thing you notice is how thick the new windows are compared with the Bachm

Critter...progress

Thanks for the positive comments. Jam, not sure about colours yet, but part of me wants wasp stripe bufferbeams!   Progress has slowed, but as I'm trying to utilise as much of the kit parts as possible I decided to fabricate a 'thing' for the top of the bonnet from one of the kit's buffers and attempted to make an exhaust stack from one of the plastic axles. Not sure about this though because, although successful, it doesn't look right when viewed as part of the model itself.   Oh well, back

Hythe Parkway - SESR & Bluebell Gala!

Hi Guys,   Last night was the last night that Hythe Parkway will be up at the Clubrooms before Newbury. So, after hearing that my good friend Matt Wickes (Bluebell Model Railway on here) was coming, we decided to hold a joint Southeast Steam Railway & Bluebell Railway Gala at Hythe Parkway!   Matt brought along his 'H' Class 0-4-4T Tank and his E4 0-6-2T which can be see on his Horstead Keynes layout thread here: http://www.rmweb.co....oo/page__st__50   Another visitor was a Regional R

Deltic Prototypes - a Level of Detail?

Well, both DP1s are sat ready for their blue top coats, chassis done and running. So my mind wandered to the finishing touches..   As I used to work for a gauge company I thought it would be nice to paint the fuel level gauges at least on my Dapol/Bachmann version, then I thought of a better way.   Thanks to sir haydn for supplying me with this picture     after a bit of processing to crop out detail and adjust the exposure to take account of the reduction in scale by 1/76 gives me thes
