Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Any old iron - Jinty lamp irons.

A quick update on the Jinty progress with a few details on making the lamp irons.   The lamp irons on the footplate are simple enough, the etchings supplied in the kit are fine but I thought they were a little on the skinny side so I just used a bit of nickel strip. However the rear lamp irons and the one on the top of the smoke box are a little more tricky. The etchings supplied in the kit involves folding back etches which I think end up looking too thick in places. This was my solution.

Progress... and an almighty c*ck-up

Progress has been made on Blanche, but I've suffered something of a setback. I shall start at the beginning, and build up in a not-so-dramatic fashion until it all falls to pieces (though thankfully not quite literally). First of all though, a comedy photo of me and my Land Rover to give an excuse for my lack of updates:     The last update was at the point where the rods had been placed cosmetically over the cranks... all well and good? No, not really... the bushes were also rather wider t

The method to the madness!

A few people have asked how the overgrown line was created so here goes!   First the line was sprayed using Railmatch Frame Dirt and the rails painted with a rust colour. I used a slightly redder colour for the older lines than the mainline to differentiate between the two.     The line is then ballasted, with the scenic disused line done using Woodland Scenics fine brown. The still used older line is ballasted using a mix of the brown and fine buff to give some contrast between the two.

Where did January go?

...or put another way, is it really 2 weeks since I posted anything? I should start with a big thumbs up for the Weston show back on 17 Jan. Just under 1000 through the door for a one dayer and over ??1500 raised for Weston Hospicecare. A very well attended and staged show. Well done Keith if you're on here.   Not much is happening at the moment. Stock has been cleaned and checked ready for the trek up to Rochdale this weekend. Must remember to pack thermals and phrasebook. It'll give Geof an

Working DCC shunting locos

I had never before known the joys of shunting. Now I have an 04 and an Austerity chipped, I can play in my modest brewery for hours! All I need now is a remote uncoupling system. My man is selling second hand stock with Kadee couplers - is it worth stocking up on the stock while he has them? How do you uncouple them? Would I find the answers to these questions with a tiny little bit of looking myself on the search function or internet rather than asking my helpful readership to do all the

Office, Mess, Stores Roof

Having finished the sand dryer I can now return to adding the roof to the Office complex. As with the sand dryer I chose to use plasticard over the mdf sub roof and set about cutting and glueing pieces of 2othou plasticard to form the hipped roof. I also attached lengths of plastic rod on the ridge joints in preparation for the ridge tiles. The plastic rod also makes it easier to accurately cut and fit the tiles.     You will see I have added roof glazing - I forgot to cut the openings for

Introduction to North Marsh Road - Ex. 2010 Challenge

After much procrastination and umming and ahhing I have decided to take a late plunge and enter the RMWeb 2010 challenge. Not sure how far I will actually get, but the challenge has really inspired me to get on do at least something. However, my modelling efforts will have to be shared with a rather long running and fairly extensive house renovation project.   But for now here are the basic layout stats I am thinking of:   Layout Name - North Marsh Road   What Type - OO 4mm/ft - DCC

Mail trains and a few photos

The layout has been out of action for a while whilst it moved rooms, but now in its new home i've been playing (i mean testing of course). with the layout packed away it gave me a little push to get on with things i had been putting off like the mail terminal building and some weathering of stock etc, so tonight i borrowed some of my brothers new acquisition's and played about with the camera. I have also been planning what's next? I need to complete the timber work for the freight line just be

A look inside the cab

Last night although not included in the previous entry I gave the sector plate a coat of paint along with the track sections leading to it. As a test I plan to paint these track section rails with humbrol "steel" add some chairs and then ballast. But Ill see what that looks like before sharing pictures !   Position 1   Position 2   This next picture gives an indication of the available room for the scenic section in front of the sector plate   Tonight, despite planning a trip to th

Interior design - too

Since discovering TFMP's camera has a macro mode, I've managed to take some decent photos of the completed engine room bulkheads. No 1 end   No 2 End   Again, working from photos I've added grime washes with gouache and used powders sparingly. Looking at the photos I've found of 37 cabs, the engine room bulkheads don't seem to get as grubby as the nose.   Just the cab interior to weather now, then I can crack on with installing the other cab fittings and get the other nose bulkhead c

Critter...photos

Well I haven't had a chance to do much modelling this week, but I have taken some photos of my critter. Like I said in my last post, I've followed the example of others quite closely. Hopefully this week I'll start work on the underframe and buffer beams.           I'm toying with the idea of replacing the scalescenes building on my layout with a scratchbuilt structure too, got a few ideas I'm developing...!

Blogs vs. Topics

I have to confess when I first started this blog I was unsure if it would generate any interest at all. It is fare to say that Im not a mainstream modeller, with a strange mix of On30, Playmobil/Gscale with a bit of OO thrown in for good measure. So having just spent an hour browsing the forum I came across the Blog main page and noticed that my blog has had over 2000 views !   To all of you who stop by to see what Im up to down in my shed, thanks for taking the time and the interest. Kitchen find....

Found this in the kitchen today     Now I'm told it's a funnel for adding salt to a device called a dishwasher. However, SWMBO informs me we don't add salt to ours so looking at the photos from New Haden Colliery in this month's HM rang a bell.   Would this be a drying tower (?) for Summat perchance B)

Playing with photography

On the suggestion of James & Jim I've been playing with the depth of field settings on the camera:       Quite pleased with the results but probably need to invest in a tripod! I think it does show just how far N gauge has come in the last few years.   A few people have been asking about the grass and the methods used so I'll try and put up a few photos of how I do it.   Cheers,   Tom.

Woohoo!

I've just wired in my first ever hardwired decoder, following Trains4U's J94 guide. As is to be expected, I did some bits my own way, but it worked first time! Advance warning for my in laws - I'll be going there soon for help with grinding the weight away to fit the decoder. Now I'll have to wire my sidings so I can play shunting. I built a couple of headshunt type things when I was laying them as I intended to use DCC in the long run, and now I've got to work out how to wire it. This whol

Hornby painner tank issues...

I am very disappointed that my birthday present from 2 years ago has been running very bad this month, and I have decided to remove it from service. The reason being is that it has started to become a terrible runner, and to get it round most of the layout it needs to be at top speed. Now running a GWR painner tank at the top speed on my layout looks very silly, not even the bigger locomotives do that! At a more realistic speed the loco will jerk and come to sudden dead stop. I have attempted to

Rolling Chassis!

After a heavy week the J39 now has a rolling chassis.   Jigging up the horn guides was 'fun' because the design of hornblock means that there is nothing to prevent it from going outwards until you fit the wheels. As most jigs use a spring to keep anything in place while you solder this doesn't work. In the end I had to use the holes in the ends of the brass horn guide to hold a temporary wire through the little tab soldered on the hornblock for springing.   Wheels were fitted thanks to the l

Loco Painting

I gave my new loco a base spray of paint this morning in between track laying. As Mrs RJR has been out with friends tonight I had some more painting time. So the new loco has gone from this.....     To this                 John

Gloucester Road - promised pictures

Spent some time this afternoon sticking the last of the backscene parts to the Brimsley boards         Then here are the pictures of 159007 with the new gears, valance attached and some weathering.       Then out for a test run.   Leaving Brimsley     Passing the signal box     Passing through the station with 156xx waiting for a clear line
